The earlier papers on SKIPSM (Separated-Kernel Image processing using finite State machines) concentrated mainly on implementations using pipelined hardware. Because of the potential for significant speed increases, the technique has even more to offer for software implementations. However, the gigantic structuring elements (e.g., 51x51 in one pass) readily available in binary morphology using SKIPSM are not practical in grey-level morphology. Nevertheless, useful structuring element sizes can be achieved. This paper describes two such applications: dilation with a 7x7 square and a 7x7 octagon. Previous 2-D SKIPSM implementations had one row machine and one column machine. Two of the implementations described here follow this pattern, but the other has four machines: row, column, and the two 45-degree diagonals. In operation, all of these are one-pass algorithms: The next pixel is ''fetched'' from the input device, the two (or four) machines are updated in turn, and the resulting output pixel is written to the output device. All neighborhood information needed for processing is encoded in the state vectors of the finite-state machines. Therefore, no intermediate image stores are needed. Furthermore, even the input and output image stores can be eliminated if the image processor can keep up with the input pixel rate. Comparisons are provided between these finite-state-machine implementations and conventional implementation of the 2-step and 4-step decompositions, all based on the same structuring elements.

We present a general method for lossless/lossy coding of bi-level images. The compression and decompression method is analoguous to JBIG, a current international standard for bi-level image compression, and is based on arithmetic coding and a template to determine the coding state. Loss is introduced in a preprocess on the encoding side by flipping pixels in a controlled manner. The method is primarily aimed at halftoned images as a supplement to the specialized soft pattern matching techniques which work better for text. The new algorithm also works well on documents of mixed contents e.g. halftoning and text without any segmentation of the image. The decoding is usually slower than JBIG due to a more wide-spread template. A decoding output of more than 1 Mpixels per second can be obtained in software implementations. We present a greedy 'rate-distortion' algorithm for flipping as well as less complex algorithms intended for relatively fast encoding and moderate latency. In the less complex algorithms, flipping and encoding is carried out in the same pass. The potential risk of flipping avalanches is minimized by conditioning flipping on the sign and magnitude of the local grey-scale error computed by a forgetful error diffusion algorithm. Template based refinement coding is applied for a lossy-to-lossless refinement step. The (de)coding method is proposed as part of JBIG-2, an emerging international standard for lossless/lossy compression of bi-level images.

The purpose of this presentation is to point out the issues of incorporating digital libraries (DL) technologies into picture archiving and communication systems (PACS), The DL technologies can be used to increase the knowledge content and utilities of PACS and associated medical information systems in providing a broader range of medical services. We further illustrate certain potential application areas with examples from a research prototype developed on top of the hospital-integrated PACS of UCSF.

We exclude work on devices, components, materials, and manufacturing.

Initial experimental results are presented from the realisation of a smart-pixel based general purpose parallel optoelectronic processor. A single chip array of integrated processing elements and photodetectors is optically interconnected with a vertical cavity surface-emitting laser array. We give examples of some algorithms the system can perform. Compact gradient index lenses are utilised and we compare their performance with conventional imaging systems.

optical thin films are used in a wide variety of optical components. An important aspect of modern thin film design work is the use of computers to match the multilayer parameters to a set of optical specifications such as a desired reflectance curve. There are several basic approaches to the design of thin film multilayer coatings. These include graphical, analytical and digital design methods. The latter, representing both local and global minimum seeking algorithms, are particularly powerful because they lend themselves to the design of coatings with much more complicated properties than is possible with the other methods. Many traditional optimization techniques, including Simplex, Gradient, and Damped least squares method, have been used in this field. However, up to now, it has not been possible to say if one of these techniques gives the optimal solution of the problem to be solved. A genetic algorithm is introduced to search for the optimal optical thin film design. This paper discusses the problem of thin film design in greater detail. It shows how a genetic algorithm can evolve the design for better performance. Examples of designs obtained by GA optimization techniques are given.

We show that the diameter of an N/sup 2/ processor OTIS-Mesh is 4/spl radic/(N-3). Two possible embeddings of an N/spl times/N mesh onto an OTIS-Mesh are evaluated. OTIS-Mesh algorithms for some commonly performed permutations-transpose, bit reversal, vector reversal, perfect shuffle, unshuffle, shuffled row-major, and bit shuffle-are developed. We also propose an algorithm for general BPC permutations.

In the development of advanced information systems, such as parallel processing computers and ATM switching systems, the speed and capacity of board-mountable processors and switches will increase considerably through advances in VLSI technology. VCSEL based smart pixels will be the key devices to interconnect the VLSI chips, with high throughput at both the inter- and intra-board level. The technical issues involved in applying VCSEL based smart pixels to parallel optical interconnection systems are discussed from the viewpoint of their system applications.

In this paper, we present a cluster architecture for Internet multimedia servers, which uses the Fibre Channel (FC) technology to overcome some of the shortcomings of existing architectures. We also explore the design issues of an FC-based multimedia server cluster. A significant advantage of the FC-based cluster is that it allows physical storage attachment to the interconnect. Because of this feature, FC-based clusters will change the fundamental data-sharing paradigm of existing clusters by eliminating remote data accesses in a cluster. Many aspects of this architecture are critical to real-time multimedia applications, such as audio and video services.
