In this paper, we present a cluster architecture for Internet multimedia servers, which uses the Fibre Channel (FC) technology to overcome some of the shortcomings of existing architectures. We also explore the design issues of an FC-based multimedia server cluster. A significant advantage of the FC-based cluster is that it allows physical storage attachment to the interconnect. Because of this feature, FC-based clusters will change the fundamental data-sharing paradigm of existing clusters by eliminating remote data accesses in a cluster. Many aspects of this architecture are critical to real-time multimedia applications, such as audio and video services.

A testbed for investigation of heterogeneous and reconfigurable data network fabrics supporting a parallel DSP computational accelerator is described. The DSP processors are large-grained processors (Analog devices SHARC DSPs), with a variety of parallel DSP array architectures possible. The network fabric is intended to be reconfigurable (within a rich but necessarily limited set of structures) to adapt to the needs of a sequence of image processing algorithms being executed (e.g., in a medical image processing environment). The testbed will exploit conventional FPGA components to provide reconfigurable network structures and will exploit commercial high-speed interconnect components emerging for applications such as board-to-board applications. As a computational accelerator, the testbed is intended to be controlled by a host processor, with the host processor cooperating in the definition of the changes in the structure of the network structure as execution of a sequence of image processing algorithms proceeds.

Computed tomography (CT) image reconstruction algorithms such as convolution backprojection (CBP) and the Fourier inversion method (FIM) are highly compute intensive applications for today's single processor systems. Shared memory multiprocessor systems are simple to implement. However the shared bus used to connect the processors to memory is a major bottleneck in a shared memory multiprocessor system. We have designed a hierarchical bus based system (HBBS) which solves the bus congestion problem by hierarchically increasing the number of buses. The architecture is truly expandable and it retains the simplicity of bus based systems. We have implemented the CBP and FIM algorithms on a HBBS, built using commercially available high performance floating point digital signal processor (DSP) devices. The HBBS is found to be efficient in executing the computed tomography (CT) image reconstruction algorithms. The motivation for this work is not to develop new algorithms, but to evaluate the relative performance of well known algorithms when applied to real practical architectures. The results show that an 8-node HBBS executes the CBP and FIM algorithms about 100 times faster compared to the execution time of CBP and FIM algorithms on an IBM 340 series Workstation.

Despite the steady decrease in secondary storage prices, the data storage requirements of many organizations cannot be met economically using secondary storage alone. Tertiary storage offers a lower-cost alternative but is viewed as a second-class citizen in many systems. For instance, the typical solution in bringing tertiary-resident data under the control of a DBMS is to use operating system facilities to copy the data to secondary storage, and then to perform query optimization and execution as if the data had been in secondary storage all along. This approach fails to recognize the opportunities for saving execution time and storage space if the data were accessed directly on tertiary devices and in parallel with other I/Os. We explore how to join two DBMS relations stored on magnetic tapes. Both relations are assumed to be larger than available disk space. We show how Grace Hash Join can be modified to handle a range of tape relation sizes. The modified algorithms access data directly on tapes and exploit parallelism between disk and tape I/Os. We also provide performance results of an experimental implementation of the algorithms.

Lockheed Martin (Loral) has installed PACS with associated teleradiology in several tens of hospitals. The PACS that have been installed have been the basis for a shift to filmless radiology in many of the hospitals. The basic structures for the PACS and the teleradiology that is being used is outlined. The way that the PACS are being used in the hospitals is instructive, The three most used areas for radiology in the hospital are the wards including the ICU wards, the emergency room, and the orthopedics clinic. The examinations are mostly CR images with 20% to 30% of the examinations being CT, MR, and ultrasound exams. The PACS are being used to realize improved productivity for radiology and for the clinicians. For radiology the same staff is being used for 30% to 50% more workload, For the clinicians 10% to 20% of their time is being saved in dealing with radiology images. The improved productivity stems from the high performance of the PACS that has been designed and installed. images are available on any workstation in the hospital within less than two seconds, even during the busiest hour of the day. The examination management functions to restrict the attention of any one user to the examinations that are of interest. The examination management organizes the workflow through the radiology department and the hospital, improving the service of the radiology department by reducing the time until the information from a radiology examination is available. The remaining weak link in the PACS system is transcription, The examination can be acquired, read, and the report dictated in much less than ten minutes. The transcription of the dictated reports can take from a few hours to a few days. The addition of automatic transcription services will remove this weak link.

The problem of improving the quality of measurements, using the integration technologies for implementation of various measurement functions, is addressed. The intelligent spectrometric probe for in situ measurements is under development. The idea of the integrated implementation of the spectrometric sensor based on the standard integration technologies is put forward and work in progress is reported. The results of algorithmic study, including verification based on both real-world data and laboratory hybrid model of the intelligent spectrometric sensor, confirm the feasibility of the sensor. The possibilities of realization of the sensor and of its integrated implementation are presented. The perspective for numerous applications is summarized.

Accurate in-situ studies of the oceans requires an efficient, fast and reliable method of transmitting information to and from dedicated scientific payloads. The current generation of underwater telemetry systems tend to use proven, low data rate, 'discrete-component' designs. Although these systems perform well in static environments, their performance rapidly degenerates when the environment becomes more dynamic. The next generation of underwater telemetry systems must be able to adapt automatically to the changing environment and counteract time-varying effects by means of flexible signal processing techniques and detection algorithms. This goal is hard, if not impossible, to realise using conventional 'discrete component' designs. This paper presents a vertical communication system that uses an 'Analogue devices' digital signal processor (DSP) at its heart. This DSP controls the transmission of data and operative commands to and from a seafloor unit, using multi-phase, 2, 4 or 8, differential phase shift keying (DPSK). This system is considered to be the first step towards a completely autonomous, adaptive communications system.

Summary form only given. Building intelligent electronic systems based on high-functionality device is presented. By "intelligent" we mean such a system that can make a real-time response to events in the real world. Such real-time response of a system is almost impossible and can only be achieved by the sophistication of software running on general purpose computers. Innovations in devices and circuits are demanded. The continuing enhancement in the performance of MPUs is phenomenal. However, severe limitations are now being encountered in terms of power dissipation and the management of very high-frequency clock signals on a chip. Even more difficult problems are arising in the algorithms to solve real-world problems. It is almost impossible to build such an electronic system that can capture an image of the real world by image sensors, analyze the image by image processing algorithms and recognize what is happening, and then take an appropriate action in real time. Sequential computation based on rigorous Boolean algebra is too slow even with MPUs operating beyond 1 GHz. Enhancing the functionality of an elemental device and embedding algorithms at the very bottom device level of a system is essential. The purpose of this paper is to present our strategy to build intelligent electronic systems based on a psychological model of the human brain and utilizing a neuron MOS transistor as a high-functionality four-terminal device.

TIER II Plus is a high altitude unmanned reconnaissance aircraft carrying a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and electro-optical/infrared (EOIR) sensor that will provide all-weather, day and night, high resolution imagery of ground targets for joint armed forces users. Its high area coverage rate is achieved in near real-time by transmitting the collected imagery while the vehicle is airborne and relaying that imagery via satellite to ground stations for processing and dissemination. The electro-optical sensor assembly consists of a mid-wave infra-red (MWIR) staring array built by Hughes Aircraft Company and a CCD visible staring array from Kodak that share common reflective optics. The telescope/sensor subassembly is mounted on the inner gimbal of a two axis gimbal set that directs the sensor line-of-sight (LOS) to designated earth-fixed locations. An on-gimbal inertial rate sensor provides the 2-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) inertial reference to stabilize the sensor LOS. An off-gimbal GPS-aided inertial navigation system (INS) provides aircraft navigation data to the control system for inertial position stabilization and for determining the target image geolocation. Fine stabilization and step/stare requirement is jointly achieved with two-axis image motion compensation (IMC) mirror mechanisms mounted internally in the telescope optical train. This paper describes the salient features of the TIER II Plus control system design with emphasis on the algorithms used for LOS control, command generation, and target image geolocation. Computer simulation results will be presented to support the design.
