Various approaches have been proposed over the years for using contextual and linguistic information to improve the recognition rates of existing OCR systems. However, there is an intermediate level of information that is currently underutilized for this task: confidence measures derived from the recognition system. This paper describes a high-performance recognition system that utilizes identification of field type coupled with field-level disambiguation and a spell-correction algorithm to significantly improve raw recognition outputs. This paper details the implementation of a high-accuracy machine-print character recognition system based on backpropagation neural networks. The system makes use of neural net confidences at every stage to make decisions and improve overall performance. It employs disambiguation rules and a robust spell-correction algorithm to enhance recognition. These processing techniques have led to substantial improvements of recognition rates in large scale tests on images of postal addresses.

Contour fitting in image segmentation guarantees the closedness of the segment boundary at any stage of the approximation, thus preserving an important global property of the segment. A contour fitting scheme consists of strategies to modify the contour and to optimize the current approximation. For the purpose of contour modification a two-dimensional adaptation of a geometrically deformable model (GDM) is employed. A GDM is a polygon being placed into a structure to be segmented and being deformed until it adequately matches the segment's boundary. Deformation occurs by vertex translation and by introducing new vertices. Sufficient boundary resemblance is achieved by choosing vertex locations in such way that a function is optimized whose different terms describe features attributed to the segment or its boundary. In order to find ideal vertex locations, a stochastic optimisation method is applied which is able to avoid termination of the deformation process in a local optimum (caused, e.g., by noise or artefacts). The deformation terminates after segment boundary and GDM are sufficiently similar. Missing boundary parts between vertices are detected by a path searching technique in a graph whose nodes represent pixel locations. The segmentation algorithm was found to be versatile and robust in the presence of noise being able to segment artificial as well as real image data.

In this paper we introduce a new algorithm for segmentation of medical images of any dimension. The segmentation is based on geometric methods and multiscale analysis. A sequence of increasingly blurred images is created by Gaussian blurring. Each blurred image is segmented by locating its ridges, decomposing the ridges into curvilinear segments and assigning a unique label to each, and constructing a region for each ridge segment based on a flow model which uses vector fields naturally associated with the ridge finding. The regions from the initial image are leaf nodes in a tree. The regions from the blurred images are interior nodes of the tree. Arcs of the tree are constructed based on how regions at one scale merge via blurring into regions at the next scale. Objects in the image are represented by unions and differences of subtrees of the full tree. The tree is used as input to a visualization program which allows the user to interactively explore the hierarchy and define objects. Some results are provided for a 3D magnetic resonance image of a head.

This paper describes the Bayesian image reconstruction algorithm with entropy prior with space variant hyperparameter. The spatial variation of the hyperparameter allows different degrees of resolution in areas of high and low signal/noise ratio, thus avoiding the large residuals present in algorithms that use a constant balancing parameter. The space variant hyperparameter determines the relative weight between the prior information and the likelihood defining the degree of smoothness of the solution. To compute the variable hyperparameter we used a segmentation technique based on artificial neural networks of the Self- Organizing Map type. Using this technique we segmented the image in 25 regions and computed a different value of the hyperparameter for each one. We applied the method to the Hubble Space Telescope Cameras and to ground based CCD data.

Multimodal fuzzy voxel labeling is presented as the basis for a new image registration criterion. The corresponding registration system's architecture performs an iterative calculation of the labeling and the registration process simultaneously, while most other registration systems perform segmentation and iterative estimation of registration parameters sequentially. It will be argued that its application leads to more automated and more accurate registration solutions than does e.g. the use of typical surface based registration systems. In order to support the arguments raised we have performed a case study using both 2D MR software phantom image, and 2D and 3D MR/CT image data. In this case study we looked at the behaviour of maximum likelihood voxel labeling as the simplest instantiation of a fuzzy voxel labeling algorithm. However, the architecture is open to integration of more general multimodal fuzzy voxel labeling algorithms.

This paper describes a new robust stereo and motion analysis algorithm to meet the special demands of a multiview 3D TV system. Based on this algorithm, images can be synthesized for any virtual camera position within the array covered by the real cameras. It is possible to create any number of perspective views needed for smooth motion parallax in multiview systems. For the reconstruction of a scene, 3D line segments are estimated by triangulation of corresponding 2D line segments (disparity estimation). This estimation of 3D segments is carried out more dependably by the combination of stereo and motion information and -- to achieve further improvements -- the utilization of multiocular stereo. New measures for a more reliable estimation of the scene are proposed. To achieve subjectively error-free estimations, Prazdny's coherence principle is extended to motion and image sequences as well as sub-constellations of the multi-camera rig. This algorithm comes up with a 4D space-time model of the scene by the cooperation of multi-camera motion and stereo.

Many radar systems need to be able to accurately determine a target's height above terrain. In airborne early warning (AEW) systems, the radar antenna is limited in its vertical aperture, thus producing a broad beamwidth in elevation. This reduces its curacy for height fmding. An alternate method of height fmding is to measure the delay of a ground-bounce (multipath) signal from the target, referenced to the direct line of sight path. This has been demonstrated successfully with AEW radars which operate over water in certain situations, but has had limited success over land. The problem has been the lack of an accurate, robust signal processing algorithm for determining the time delay between closely spaced direct and ground bounce returns. Our basic objective was to make credible the premise that an airborne AEW radar can accurately determine height of targets by processing the delayed echo due to the multipath ground bounce. Current AEW systems use this technique, but in a limited way -usually only over water, where the surface reflection is strong and predictable and when it is well separated from the direct reflection. It has been recognized for some time that land also can cause multipath reflections, but due to its irregular nature, this technique has not been exploited thoroughly. Therefore, our objectives were to show height finding can be done accurately when the direct pulse overlaps the specular return (over water or land). The signal processing problem is essentially one of performing time-of-arrival estimation of two or more pulse returns; the direct plus one or more ground bounce echoes. For typical AEW scenarios, the echoes may overlap the direct return and are usually of lower amplitude. Therefore, the algorithm must make use of the maximum information content of the signal and should have as low a threshold signal to noise ratio as possible in order to apply in the greatest number of conditions. The comparative analysis of application multichannel acousto-optic (AO) and acoustoelectronic (AE) filters in communication systems with spread spectrum signals (SSS) is given. AO filters have been based on AO modulators and multichannel steeped phased transparents. AE filters were standard SAW devices. The advantages of AO filters (wide band, frequency invariance, large functional possibilities) are discussed. The questions of technology, AO modulators, and phased transparents have been considered. Results of mathematical and natural modelling have been done.

An important first step in diagnosis and treatment planning using tomographic imaging is differentiating and quantifying diseased as well as healthy tissue. One of the difficulties encountered in solving this problem to date has been distinguishing the partial volume constituents of each voxel in the image volume. Most proposed solutions to this problem involve analysis of planar images, in sequence, in two dimensions only. We have extended a model-based method of image segmentation which applies the technique of iterated conditional modes in three dimensions. A minimum of user intervention is required to train the algorithm. Partial volume estimates for each voxel in the image are obtained yielding fractional compositions of multiple tissue types for individual voxels. A multispectral approach is applied, where spatially registered data sets are available. The algorithm is simple and has been parallelized using a dataflow programming environment to reduce the computational burden. The algorithm has been used to segment dual echo MRI data sets of multiple sclerosis patients using lesions, gray matter, white matter, and cerebrospinal fluid as the partial volume constituents. The results of the application of the algorithm to these datasets is presented and compared to the manual lesion segmentation of the same data.

This paper presents the design of high altitude balloon experiment (HABE) attitude determination and control architecture. Inertial pointing forms the foundation of the HABE tracking system where the precise attitude control system is required to ensure target acquisition. The basic concept involves constructing an inertial line of sight (LOS) vector with target and HABE trajectory measurements and controlling the gimbal attitude to create a parallel LOS. algorithms are developed incorporating the gimbal dynamics and inertial sensor information to optimize the pointing control system's flexibility and accuracy. Coordinate transformations between inertial, sensor, and vehicle frames intensify the complexities in realizing the pointing control system design. Kalman filtering is incorporated, providing trajectory prediction and compensating measurements for extraneous noise and latencies. The complete architecture of the pointing control system is analyzed with both frequency domain models and time domain simulation to characterize performance predictions.
