We have developed and installed a Medical Image Access System in an intensive care unit. Images are acquired and transmitted automatically to this system, thus expanding on the previous results of Shile et. al. It is our goal to determine what effect regular, sustained availability of image data in the clinic has on the Intensive Care Unit and the Department of Radiology. Our system is installed and has been in regular use in the hospital since late August of 1993. Since the time of installation we have been collecting usage information from both the manual and automated systems. From this data we are performing the standard measures established by DeSimone et. al. Our initial results support the original findings that image availability in the clinic leads to earlier patient care decision based on the image data. However, our findings do not seem to indicate that there is a breakdown of communication between the clinician and the radiologist as a result of the use of the clinical display system. In addition to the established measure we are investigating other criteria to measure time saved by both the clinician and radiologist. The results are reported in this paper.

The combination of vertical optical taps with planar optical waveguides could improve the functionality of guided wave devices for a number of reasons: (a) They permit three-dimensional optical interconnection between different layers or boards. This offers a considerable improvement of the processing capabilities of information systems, (b) Such structures are very interesting for applications such as OSM (optical surface mount)1 and OBPI (optical backplane interconnect). In these applications light is tapped from the waveguide into a functional component or board; after processing, new light signals are injected into the waveguides. The functional component can be a single optical device (optical isolator, optical amplifier, optical modulator, etc.), a single opto-electronic device (laser diode, detector), or an opto-electronic system consisting of opto-electronic transducers and electronic processors (receiver-transmitter module, OBPI, etc.).

Classical signal processing functions such as spectrum analysis, correlation, convolution, filtering, mixing, and noise reduction can be performed optically using optical signal processing devices and systems. The signal media, i.e., light waves, not only have a higher information-carrying capacity than electrical wires, but may pass through each other without interference, thus providing an increased interconnection capacity. This property facilitates improved communication and ease of reconfiguration between processing elements in highly parallel optical computing architectures.1

Documents need to be sampled at different rates for different output devices: 300-600 dpi for laser printers, 100-200 dpi for fax, and 75-100 dpi for bitmap terminals. To output a high resolution document on a low resolution device, it may be necessary to introduce downsampling. Standard signal processing techniques such as linear filtering and decimation don't work very well at low resolutions. Better results are obtained by a nonlinear filtering technique we introduce in this paper, called nonlinear document equalization. Even better results are obtained by taking advantage of fonts designed specifically for bitmap terminals and other low resolution devices. However, character-level information is required to make use of fonts. This information is not always available; OCR is not 100% accurate. We propose a hybrid approach: downsample by font substitution when possible, and decimate when necessary. Unfortunately, the result tends to look like a "ransom note". Equalization is used to blend the two cases together so that gaps in the OCR analysis become almost unnoticeable.

The paper presents a new technique to infer 3D information using a static camera provided with a zoom lens. The modelling process is straightforward and does not involve the computation of intrinsic camera parameters. The approach is based on the exploitation of images of accurate regular grids. The main idea is to compute a transformation which allows to obtain a relationship between the real grids (without distortion) located in front of the camera and their distorted images on the CCD matrix. This relationship takes automatically all the distortion phenomena into account. Previous work in reconstruction by zooming involved high quality optical systems. The principal aim of the present work is to generalize this kind of reconstruction in the case of a standard zoom lens.< >

Images from an electro-optical sensor provide a covert way of detecting objects in the flight path of a low-flying helicopter. Passive ranging consists of processing a sequence of images using techniques based on optical flow computation and recursive estimation. The passive ranging algorithm has to extract obstacle information from imagery at rates varying from five to thirty or more frames per second depending on the helicopter speed. We have implemented and tested the passive ranging algorithm off-line using helicopter-collected images. However, the real-time data and computational requirements of the algorithm are beyond the capability of any off-the-shell microprocessor or digital signal processor. This paper describes the computational requirements of the algorithm and uses parallel processing technology to meet these requirements. Various issues in the selection of a parallel processing architecture are discussed and four different computer architectures are evaluated regarding their suitability to process the algorithm in real-time.< >

Practical applications of wordspotting, such as spoken message retrieval and browsing, require the ability to process large amounts of speech data at speeds many times faster than real-time. The paper presents a novel approach to this problem in which all of the stored audio material is preprocessed off-line to generate a phoneme lattice. At search time, putative word matches are found in this lattice using symmetric dynamic programming. The paper presents the details of the algorithms used and compares performance with a number of conventional approaches using a 20 keyword vocabulary on the DARPA Resource Management Task. The results show that the proposed method is very much faster yet performs acceptably compared to conventional systems which depend on keyword-specific training or prior knowledge of the test set vocabulary.< >

VLSI technology provides the means for implementing parallel systems with large numbers of computing elements. However, the high cost of communication in area, time, and power, relative to that of logic and storage, constrains the design and engineering of large-scale tightly-coupled systems. The problem severity increases as die size increases, and is at its worst in wafer-scale integration (WSI) and multichip module (MCM) packaging. Multiwave optical computing, where discrete wavelengths are employed as multiplexable information carriers, presents an interesting solution to the communication crisis in next-generation integrated systems. A computer architecture using multiwavelength opto-electronic integrated circuits (multiwave OEICs) provides the wavelength space as an extra dimension of freedom for parallel processing. A key feature is that several independent computations can be performed in a single optical circuit using wavelength space, as if it were several computing circuits operating in parallel.< >

There has been an increase in the development of image processing applications in steel industries. In this paper, the authors describe a measurement system to obtain flatness defect indexes of products in hot strip mills. This system has been developed with lasers and linear-scan cameras. Every line scan camera is connected to a line scan processor board. All boards are in an industrial personal computer (industrial-PC) which governs the operation of boards. Moreover, it is possible to use an additional digital signal processor to accelerate the computation of algorithms. Flatness measurement devices, based on the optical triangulation principle, have been installed successfully by some manufacturers e.g. IRSID Lasershape, CRM Rometer, etc.< >
