The phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) is a powerful tool for a variety of applications, such as pipeline safety monitoring, perimeter safety, and geological exploration. However, real-time demodulation and status monitoring remain a challenge since a huge amount of data is collected all the time in such system. Here, we demonstrate a real-time Φ-OTDR system based on FPGA digital signal processing scheme, utilizing a single rectangular pulse for the heterodyne coherent detection system. The experimental results indicate that the comprehensive resource consumption of the demodulation algorithm is controllable. Subsequently, the distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) with a sensing distance of 9 km, a demodulation rate of 10kHz, and a spatial sampling interval of 10m is obtained. Hence, such a real-time Φ-OTDR system can achieve a long distance and high resolution detection of DAS.

The Internet of Medical Things has emerged as a transformative technology in healthcare, facilitating remote monitoring and management of medical devices. However, despite these benefits, there is a need for more vigilance in ensuring electromagnetic compatibility within the Internet of Medical Things networks. It is quite essential to prevent electromagnetic interference as it could compromise device efficacy and consequently patient safety. This study aims to enhance real-time detection and prediction of electromagnetic radiations on the Internet of Medical Things networks by leveraging the predictive capabilities of the Kalman filter. An experiment was conducted over 30 days to evaluate the performance of the algorithm in optimizing electromagnetic compatibility management thus mitigating electromagnetic interference events. The algorithm was implemented and validated with 2500 samples of radiation emissions, with coordinates of the device’s location. The results indicated that the implementation of Kalman filter algorithms could reduce sensor noise by up to 88% of accuracy. This research contributes to advancing electromagnetic compatibility monitoring techniques on the Internet of Medical Things networks, offering valuable implications for the design and implementation of resilient healthcare systems.

The development of 6G communication has made low earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks to be a critical component of global communication systems. The high density of LEO satellites enables mobile devices to have continuous communication. However, managing satellites in mega-constellation LEO satellite networks poses a scalability challenge due to the large number of LEO satellite nodes. Besides, due to the high mobility of LEO satellites, inter-satellite handover frequently occurs, which leads to the degradation of traffic QoS (Quality of Service). To address these issues, in this paper, we propose a novel virtual node-based multi-controller management architecture for LEO-satellite constellation networks, that can effectively shield the dynamics of satellite network topology. In specific, we first redefine the virtual node as a geographical area with clear boundaries. Then, we set up domain controllers in each virtual node to manage the satellites. Besides, we propose a handover algorithm to reduce delay jitter and delay by jointly considering the probability of handover and the cost of rerouting. We conduct simulations on Starlink Phase I and the results show that compared with benchmark algorithms, the proposed architecture can reduce the delay jitter by more than 50% and the delay by 10%. © 2023 IEEE.

We experimentally realized design of low differential mode group delay (DMGD) few-mode fibers (FMFs) over C-band that support six linear polarized (LP) modes. Using a genetic algorithm (GA), the maximum DMGD was reduced to below 16 pm/km, followed by fabrication and characterization. This enables more efficient and complex MDM systems with reduced MIMO processing requirements.

Stress and anxiety are part of a modern person's life, which is why they contribute to severe psychological and somatic disorders. The general objective of this work is to develop a live healthcare platform for stress and anxiety recognition and monitoring using machine learning algorithms from wearable biometric data or phone sensors. It is a scalable and privacy guaranteed solution to monitor continuously by processing real-time data only, through the integration of cloud computing with edge computing. Using machine learning, signals like heart rate variability, electrodermal activity, and accelerometry are analyzed to accurately detect signs of stress and anxiety. It is an app that provides users with personalized feedback and interventions to help enhance their mental health. Our evaluation emphasizes the accuracy of detection, scalability, and the performance of real-time processing on the platform, while also addressing challenges related to privacy and computational efficiency. The findings indicate that the platform can be a valuable resource for managing stress and anxiety in real time, highlighting the growing role of wearable technology in the healthcare sector.

Spatial modes provide a potential dimension to boost the capacity of free-space optical (FSO) communication systems. Various modal basis sets can be used. For a given aperture size, complete orthogonal modal basis sets can provide higher capacity compared to incomplete modal basis sets, but are more sensitive to FSO channel impairments, such as atmospheric turbulence. In this invited paper, we review our recent progress in using advanced digital signal processing algorithms for the implementation of high-capacity mode-division multiplexed FSO communication systems when employing complete modal basis sets. Besides turbulence, the relatively high inter-mode crosstalk from a commercial multiplexer/demultiplexer has been taken into account. By employing adaptive loading at the transmitter side and/or advanced multiple-input multiple-output detection algorithms at the receiver side, record-high single-wavelength transmission data rates and spectral efficiency have been achieved over both turbulence-free and turbulent FSO links, where all key devices are commercially available.

In web development, the basis for successful interaction between different applications and systems is reliable and fast information transfer. To interact with external APIs and web services, reliable means of transferring, storing and structuring information are used: XML (eXtensible Markup Language) and JSON (JavaScript Object Notation). The ability to support namespace in XML, unlike JSON, provides good compatibility and integration between different systems and applications, so many industry standards and protocols prefer to use it as the main format for data exchange. JSON to XML transformations will enable convenient processing and transfer of structured data between different systems and devices. In this study, a JSON to XSD and XML transformation model has been developed to correctly handle data transformation in both directions without losing the transformation of the JSON document structure.

In classical Finite Rate of Innovation (FRI) theory, signal reconstruction is initially achieved with precision using the zeroing filter algorithm on noiseless pulse signals. However, with the introduction of noise, the zeroing filter algorithm exhibits reduced robustness when handling signals with low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). This paper introduces the TLS-ESPRIT algorithm, which enhances robustness against noise to some extent. Additionally, building on the development of an FRI reconstruction system based on C-TEM sampling, this work innovatively proposes a cascaded filter phase compensation method. This method mitigates the nonlinear phase effects of analog filters, thereby improving reconstruction accuracy. Ultimately achieving a reduction in sampling rate while improving reconstruction accuracy.

Fingerphotos are fingerprint images acquired using a basic smartphone camera. Although significant progress has been made in matching fingerphotos, the security of these authentication mechanisms is challenged by presentation attacks (PAs). A presentation attack can subvert a biometric system by using simple tools such as a printout or a photograph displayed on a device. The goal of this research is to improve the performance of fingerphoto presentation attack detection (PAD) algorithms by exploring the effectiveness of deep representations derived from various color spaces. For each color space, different convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are trained and the most accurate is selected. The individual scores output by the selected CNNs are combined to yield the final decision. Experiments were carried out on the IIITD Smartphone Fingerphoto Database, and results demonstrate that integrating various color spaces, including the commonly used RGB, outperforms the existing fingerphoto PAD algorithms. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Recognizing actions from dynamic images is vital for numerous real-world applications, encompassing areas such as surveillance, autonomous vehicles, and human-computer interaction. However, current machine vision systems rely on complex circuits and algorithms. Here, we demonstrate an insect-inspired compact neural network with only one synaptic layer for in-sensor recognizing actions. MoS 2 phototransistor can perceive and nonlinearly manipulate temporal information. With 20×20 phototransistor arrays, we have realized in-sensor compressing dynamic vision with >99% recognizing accuracy.
