In this paper we present an optoelectronic hardware implementation of a neural network system based on optoelectronic devices and electronic techniques. The system is composed of basic cells with optoelectronic artificial neurons;every basic cells exploits the communication strengths of optics to broadcast the input to all neurons and the computational strengths of electronics to assign the interconnections weights. Description of the architecture of the basic cell, the first implementation of a prototype based on the proposed system and examples of configuration of the neural system are described.

All-optical logic can avoid expensive demultiplexing back to electronics in telecommunications. The term all-optical is used to described processing in which all signal paths are optical whether used for control or information. Semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) can perform all optical logic because they have nonlinearity, low latency, and require low power. We use highly accurate computer models to simulate and evaluate NOR and NXOR logic gates using SOAs. These elements can act as building blocks for advanced logic systems. For example, in previous publications we described an approach to constructing arithmetic units from optical logic elements.

Wireless communications are rapidly becoming the means of data and information transfer for a broad range of applications. As wireless communication applications continue to expand, the information transfer rates are evolving toward the Gigabit per second data rate and, for some applications, there is even a need for terabit per second data rate transfer in the wireless network. In addition, wireless terminals often require instantaneous switching and communications between network members. For most applications directional antennas are needed to support the high data throughput requirements, and phased array antennas are the only high gain, directional antennas that can be rapidly switched to provide instantaneous communications among network members scattered geographically. Wireless terminal equipment is currently designed to operate in the 1 to 60 GHz frequency range and, traditionally, these equipment are designed with RF hardware. More recently, optics technology has been demonstrated to play an important role in RF systems as the True-Time-Delay in the phased array antenna, and, for some systems operating at high data rates, optical interconnects at the baseband level require E-O and O-E conversions. This paper discusses the considerations in using optics technology in the design of the wireless terminal network including optical signal processing, optical backplanes, optical networking, optical interconnects, and optical components. This paper also describes the architecture of an RF wireless communications network using a range of optical technologies.

This paper presents a segmentation algorithm for image processing, which is able to distinguish the background's area from the object's area based only on their texture characteristics. The main goal is to develop a segmentation algorithm which does not need any prior information about the object (form, colours, textures, brightness etc.) and which is also robust against industrial conditions (such as shadow effects and electromagnetic noise). The developed solution is based on a predefined and structured background (with a specific frequency in the grey values). The background frequency is compared with the object's texture frequency using a Fourier analysis together with a classification algorithm. Two different types of classification algorithms have been applied: statistical covariance analysis and Neural Networks. The algorithm has been evaluated using real textile images under distinct conditions showing a very appropriated result with a segmentation error smaller than 0,5% in the average. The paper finishes with a set of conclusions and perspectives for future works.

This research evaluates the objectivity of textile goods by using the non-contact three dimensional measuring method. The object of the measurement is a seam and wrinkle of the shirt. The evaluation of textile goods was due to watching, and it was difficult to do an absolute evaluation. The existing three-dimensional measurement device is made to correspond to textile goods, and we convert into the series to which ruggedness information is decided by ISO and can output it. The measurement device uses the pattern projection method which introduces the phase shift, and can do high density measurement in a short time. Technical paper of ISO is made for this measurement device, and the work of standardization is proceeded.

This talk focuses on the problem of shape estimation using multiple views from a land based mobile robot equipped with CCD cameras and a laser range finder that can compute the range of a target along a fixed horizontal plane. The talk surveys the problem of shape estimation from optical flow of points, lines and algebraic curves and emphasizes the fusion of camera and range sensors. Inspired from Neuroscience, the talk also introduces the role of cortical flow to the problem of encoding visual input signals and subsequently decoding these inputs using maximum likelihood estimates. To end the talk, we model the appearance of an object using principal component analysis and argue the role of appearance dynamics as an alternative to optical flow based algorithms.

In this paper we present a novel hardware architecture of a neural network system based on optoelectronic devices and electronic techniques. The main characteristics of the architecture are that is fully interconnected, the interconnections are fully programmable, it avoids optical alignment problems, and is readily scalable to large numbers of pixel neurons. Description, experimental demonstration and discussion of the behavior of the architecture are presented.
