Interferometer fringe pattern analysis is a very precise measuring method. However, this analysis method has not received significant attention in industry as a result of the long calculation time for an operation. The majority of conventional computer analysis methods process an image in the spatial domain using sophisticated algorithms. A new time domain fringe analysis technique is discussed in this paper. Until fringe analysis data can be processed at high speeds using parallel picture processing systems, fringe analysis in the spatial domain is not practical. In order to reduce the calculation time, the fringes imaged on CCD sensor are processed as analog data in the time domain in this paper. The fringes are spatial information on a CCD sensor. The fringes on the CCD sensor are converted to a synchronous electrical signal by the CCD driving clock pulse. The analog signal, which corresponds to the fringes on the CCD sensor, is analyzed using an electrical circuit. The time-instantaneous frequency and phase of the fringes are detected by frequency-demodulating and integrating the signal, respectively. This proposed system can perform high speed fringe analysis operations in 10 msec a line of CCD. The experimental results show that the new fringe analysis is a very high speed processing method and equally as accurate as the FFT method and the fringe scanning method. It is likely that this new fringe analysis method will be a very useful technique for interferometric fringe analysis requirement in industry.

The complexity of rotorcraft missions involving operations close to the ground result in high pilot workload. In order to allow a pilot time to perform mission-oriented tasks, sensor-aiding and automation of some of the guidance and control functions is highly desirable. Images from an electro-optical sensor provide a covert way of detecting objects in the flight path of a low-flying helicopter. Passive ranging consists of processing a sequence of images using techniques based on optical flow computation and recursive estimation. The passive ranging algorithm has to extract obstacle information from imagery at rates varying from five to thirty or more frames per second depending on the helicopter speed. We have implemented and tested the passive ranging algorithm off-line using helicopter images. However, the real-time data and computational requirements of the algorithm are beyond the capability of any off-the-shelf microprocessor or digital signal processor. This paper describes the computational requirements of the algorithm and uses parallel processing technology to meet this requirement. Various issues in the selection of a parallel processing architecture are discussed and four different computer architectures are evaluated regarding their suitability to process the algorithm in real-time. Based on this evaluation, we conclude that real-time passive ranging is a realistic goal and can be achieved within a short time.< >

An optoelectronic structure for implementing the iterative filtered-back projection image reconstruction algorithm is proposed. The forward projection and back projection operations in the iterative procedure are performed via optoelectronic devices, which include spatial light modulators and charge coupled device detector arrays. The optical Fourier transform is applied to speed up the reconstruction and feed-back is used to minimize the distortion caused by optical transforms.

The inherent ambiguities in recovering 3-D motion information from a single optical flow field are studied using a statistical model. These ambiguities are quantified using the Cramer-Rao lower bound, which is a lower bound for the error variances of motion parameter estimates. This performance bound is independent of the motion estimation algorithms, and can always be computed for any arbitrary 3-D motion of a rigid surface by inverting a 5*5 matrix. For the general motion of an arbitrary surface, it turns out that not every pixel gives information regarding 3-D motion estimation. It is shown that the aperture problem in computing the optical flow restricts the nontrivial information about the 3-D motion to a sparse set of pixels at which both components of the flow velocity are observable. Computer simulations are used to study the dependence of the inherent ambiguities on the underlying motion, the field of view, and the number of feature points for the motion in front of a nonplanar environment. It is shown that introducing a smoothness constraint by fitting local patches gives even lower bounds and thus is a justified technique for stabilizing the ill-posed motion estimation problem.< >

Image processing techniques (and papers describing them) have evolved rapidly in recent years. Lately, publications in image processing have underscored advances in compression, restoration, and enhancement of gray level and color coded image information using dedicated pipeline processing and systolic array architectures. These new algorithms and specialized hardware have been developed and applied to such real-time tasks as automated testors on manufacturing lines and robotic vehicle guidance systems. Often overlooked is the part of binary image processing. A review of binary processing techniques is valuable in understanding the the basic operating principles of high-speed optical inspection devices in particular and many pipeline array processing devices in general. The class of binary image transforms covered here was originally developed for topological operations on threshold image data. These non-linear operations are based on boolean transformations of a pixel and its eight adjacent neighbors (in a discrete Cartesian plane) and are named morphological transforms by authors. A straightforward way to visualize such transforms is outlined in the paper and will be demonstrated at the conference. The demonstration program package was written using the IBM Personal Computer BASI language and was presented as an educational tool in a graduate level course in image processing. The skeletal program included in the text was enhanced to allow real-time demonstration of these transform techniques and encourages readers to experiment and develop their own lookup tables and image transforms. Understanding the function and generation of these lookup tables, which can provide any arbitrary boolean combination of the nine binary values available from a pixel and its eight Cartesian neighbors, is the key to grasping the image-transforms illustrated here.
