We review the recent advances reported in the field of integrated photonic waveguide meshes, both from the theoretical as well as from the experimental point of view. We show how these devices can be programmed to implement both traditional signal processing structures, such as finite and infinite impulse response filters, delay lines, beamforming networks as well as more advanced linear matrix optics functionalities. Experimental results reported both in Silicon and Silicon Nitride material platforms will be presented. We will also discuss the main programming algorithms to implement these structures and discuss their applications either as standalone systems or as part of more elaborated subsystems in microwave photonics, quantum information and machine learning.

LiDAR devices have become a key sensor for autonomous vehicles perception due to their ability to capture reliable geometry information. Indeed, approaches processing LiDAR data have shown an impressive accuracy for 3D object detection tasks, outperforming methods solely based on image inputs. However, the wide diversity of on-board sensor configurations makes the deployment of published algorithms into real platforms a hard task, due to the scarcity of annotated datasets containing laser scans. We present a method to generate new point clouds datasets as captured by a real LiDAR device. The proposed pipeline makes use of multiple frames to perform an accurate 3D reconstruction of the scene in the spherical coordinates system that enables the simulation of the sweeps of a virtual LiDAR sensor, configurable both in location and inner specifications. The similarity between real data and the generated synthetic clouds is assessed through a set of experiments performed using KITTI Depth and Object Benchmarks.

Cluster states, a specific class of multi-partite entangled states, are of particular importance for quantum science, as such systems are equivalent to the realization of one-way (or measurement-based) quantum computers [1]. In this scheme, algorithms are implemented through high-fidelity measurements on the parties of the state [2]. While two-level (i.e. qubit) cluster states have been realized so far, increasing the number of particles to boost the computational resource comes at the price of significantly reduced coherence time and detection rates, as well as increased sensitivity to noise, restricting the realization of discrete cluster states to a record of eight qubits. In contrast, the demonstration of d-level (i.e. qudit) cluster states has the potential to i) increase quantum resources without modifying the number of particles; ii) enable the implementation of highly efficient computational protocols; iii) reduce the noise sensitivity of the states. Up till now, the realization of discrete d-level cluster states has not been shown in any quantum platform. We here demonstrate the realization of d-level cluster states, perform d-level one-way quantum processing operations on the states, and show that higher-dimensional forms of cluster states are more noise tolerant than lower dimensional realizations.

We propose an optical system to enable automatic landings of RPAS. With the current infrastructure, automatic landings of aircraft in general are only possible on airports with certified ILS CAT iii installations, since GBAS CAT iii is not yet certified. As these installations are rare and the no-visibility-capability is not required most of the time, an optical system capable of generating guidance data for the part of the approach not being covered by a CAT I system can close that gap.

optical tracking of users and various technical systems are becoming more and more popular. It consists of analysing sequence of recorded images using video capturing devices and image processing algorithms. The returned data contains mainly point-clouds, coordinates of markers or coordinates of point of interest. These data can be used for retrieving information related to the geometry of the objects, but also to extract parameters for the analytical model of the system useful in a variety of computer aided engineering simulations. The parameter identification of joints deals with extraction of physical parameters (mainly geometric parameters) for the purpose of constructing accurate kinematic and dynamic models. The input data are the time-series of the marker's position. The least square method was used for fitting the data into different geometrical shapes (ellipse, circle, plane) and for obtaining the position and orientation of revolute joins.

The strong light-matter interaction of atomically-thin layered black phosphorus (BP) has attracted great attention recently. Exfoliated few-layer and monolayer BP flakes have a layer-tunable direct bandgap that varies from 2.0 eV for monolayer to 0.3 eV for bulk, which makes BP a very promising optoelectronic material in the visible and telecom wavelengths [1-3]. The high mobility of BP devices suggested its utilization as an active material of an avalanche photodetector (APD). Recently, APDs utilizing two-dimensional (2D) materials such as transition-metal dichalcogenides (e.g. MoS₂) and layered iii-VI semiconductors (e.g. InSe) have been demonstrated [4,5]. Both of these 2D materials possess wide bandgaps that discourage their usage in the infrared [6,7]. The successful demonstration of waveguide-integrated BP photodetector working at 1.55 μm wavelength [1] has stimulated the pursuit of high-performance BP APDs. In this work, we report on the first 2D material-based BP APD featuring high external quantum efficiency (EQE) and avalanche gain. These results provide strong evidence that BP is a promising material for high-performance optical communication and imaging systems.

In order to cope with the severe path loss, millimeter-wave (mm-wave) systems exploit highly directional communication. As a consequence, even a slight beam misalignment between two communicating devices (for example, due to mobility) can generate a significant signal drop. This leads to frequent invocations of time-consuming mechanisms for beam re-alignment, which deteriorate system performance. In this paper, we propose smart beam training and tracking strategies for fast mm-wave link establishment and maintenance under node mobility. We leverage the ability of hybrid analog-digital transceivers to collect channel information from multiple spatial directions simultaneously and formulate a probabilistic optimization problem to model the temporal evolution of the mm-wave channel under mobility. In addition, we present for the first time a beam tracking algorithm that extracts information needed to update the steering directions directly from data packets, without the need for spatial scanning during the ongoing data transmission. Simulation results, obtained by a custom simulator based on ray tracing, demonstrate the ability of our beam training/tracking strategies to keep the communication rate only 10% below the optimal bound. Compared to the state of the art, our approach provides a 40% to 150% rate increase, yet requires lower complexity hardware.

This paper presents a method to improve the robustness of the position control of a small permanent magnet within a living organism, such as the human body in microsurgery. So far, position control has been achieved up to 5 Degrees of Freedom with robustness against predicted and modelled disturbance. In order to achieve robust control against non predicted disturbances, the use of a disturbance observer was proved efficient in the past. Disturbance observers require fast and accurate position sensing, which has been achieved so far by optical position sensing. In an effort to extend the operational range of magnetic levitation systems, this paper also considers the use of a position sensor which does not rely on optical sensors, but inductance variation. The models for simulations are based on the Octomag system, which is one of the most up-to-date magnetic levitation devices.

The 2D non-separable linear canonical transform (2D-NS-LCT) can describe a variety of paraxial optical systems. Digital algorithms to numerically evaluate the 2D-NS-LCTs are not only important in modeling the light field propagations but also of interest in various signal processing based applications, for instance optical encryption. Therefore, in this paper, for the first time, a 2D-NS-LCT based optical Double-random-Phase- Encryption (DRPE) system is proposed which offers encrypting information in multiple degrees of freedom. Compared with the traditional systems, i.e. (i) Fourier transform (FT);(ii) Fresnel transform (FST);(iii) Fractional Fourier transform (FRT);and (iv) Linear Canonical transform (LCT), based DRPE systems, the proposed system is more secure and robust as it encrypts the data with more degrees of freedom with an augmented key-space.
