- There are systems developed to assist the visually impaired in grocery shopping. The developed systems require physical work from the users, wireless connections and products database to obtain the products information. Here comes the need for a system that assist the visually impaired person in grocery shopping without any additional devices. The system should use object recognition algorithms instead of wireless connections and database to recognize products. In the paper, a software system was created to solve the problem of assisting the visually impaired in grocery shopping. The created software accomplished only the mission of recognizing the grocery products on shelves. The paper recommends implementing a shopping cart consists of three cameras installed vertically on one side of the cart. We conducted a comparison between two object recognition algorithms to recognize products on the aisle shelves. A multimodal system created to fuse the results of the used object recognition algorithms. © CSREA Press.

OpenVLC (***) is an open-source project for research in Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems. It has the potential to help create a new type of infrastructure, an Internet of Lights (14), where LED-based devices (e.g., car lights, city lights, billboards, toy, etc) and photodetectors become inter-connected. OpenVLC is built upon an embedded platform and adopts off-the-shelf optical devices and essential electronic components. It has been proved to be a starter kit for VLC research, thanks to its deployments by tens of top universities/research centers in the world (***/***). This demo introduces its latest version: OpenVLCl.l. The new features include: (1) higher resilience to ambient light noise, e.g., indoor interfering lighting;(2) interface for sensor application. A new board (OpenVLC1.1 cape) is designed and the printed circuit is developed. The cape is plugged directly into the main embedded board and external sensors can be easily connected to the cape. This demo demonstrates OpenVLC1.1's networking performance through standard networking diagnostic tools and shows an application wherein temperature and humidity sensed data are transmitted through VLC links.

Under the exponential increase demand by the emerging 5G wireless access networking and thus data-center based Internet, novel and economical transport of RF channels to and from wireless access systems. This paper presents the transport technologies of RF channels over the analog and digital domain so as to meet the demands of the transport capacity reaching multi-Tbps, in the followings: (i) The convergence of 5G broadband wireless and optical networks and its demands on capacity delivery and network structures;(ii) Analog optical technologies for delivery of both the information and RF carriers to and from multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna sites so as to control the beam steering of MIMO antenna in the mmW at either 28.6 GHz and 56.8 GHz RF carrier and delivery of channels of aggregate capacity reaching several Tbps;(ii) Transceiver employing advanced digital modulation formats and digital signal processing (DSP) so as to provide 100G and beyond transmission rate to meet the ultra-high capacity demands with flexible spectral grids, hence pay-on-demand services. The interplay between DSP-based and analog transport techniques is examined;(iii) Transport technologies for 5G cloud access networks and associate modulation and digital processing techniques for capacity efficiency;and (iv) Finally the integrated optic technologies with novel lasers, comb generators and simultaneous dual function photonic devices for both demultiplexing/multiplexing and modulation are proposed, hence a system on chip structure can be structured. Quantum dot lasers and matrixes of micro ring resonators are integrated on the same Si-on-Silica substrate are proposed and described.

Capturing Revolute Motion and Revolute Joint Parameters with optical Tracking

optical tracking of users and various technical systems are becoming more and more popular. It consists of analysing sequence of recorded images using video capturing devices and image processing algorithms. The returned data contains mainly point-clouds, coordinates of markers or coordinates of point of interest. These data can be used for retrieving information related to the geometry of the objects, but also to extract parameters for the analytical model of the system useful in a variety of computer aided engineering simulations. The parameter identification of joints deals with extraction of physical parameters (mainly geometric parameters) for the purpose of constructing accurate kinematic and dynamic models. The input data are the time-series of the marker's position. The least square method was used for fitting the data into different geometrical shapes (ellipse, circle, plane) and for obtaining the position and orientation of revolute joins.

An algorithm for extracting material shape and spatial information from non-uniform background, and for generating object skeletons for statistical two-dimensional experiments using random walk approach, is presented. This finds applications in textile analysis and microscopic analysis of various materials like hairs and allows for further precise determination of textile yarn dimensions as well as other geometrical characteristics like a fractal dimension.

Recent advances of ToF depth sensor devices enables us to easily retrieve scene depth data with high frame rates. However, the resolution of the depth map captured from these devices is much lower than that of color images and the depth data suffers from the optical noise effects. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm that upsamples depth map captured by ToF depth cameras and reduces noise. The upsampling is carried out by applying plane based interpolation to the groups of points similar to planar structures and depth variance based joint bilateral upsampling to curved or bumpy surface points. For dividing the depth map into piecewise planar areas, we apply superpixel segmentation and graph component labeling. In order to distinguish planar areas and curved areas, we evaluate the reliability of detected plane structures. Compared with other state-of-the-art algorithms, our method is observed to produce an upsampled depth map that is smoothed and closer to the ground truth depth map both visually and numerically. Since the algorithm is parallelizable, it can work in real-time by utilizing highly parallel processing capabilities of modern commodity GPUs.

In the framework of the ARROWS project (September 2012 August 2015), a venture funded by the European Commission, several modular Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) have been developed to the main purposes of mapping, diagnosing, cleaning, and securing underwater and coastal archaeological sites. These AUVs consist of modular mobile robots, designed and manufactured according to specific suggestions formulated by a pool of archaeologists featuring long-standing experience in the field of Underwater Cultural Heritage preservation. The vehicles are typically equipped with acoustic modems to communicate during the dive and with different payload devices to sense the environment. The selected sensors represent appealing choices to the oceanographic engineer since they provide complementary information about the surrounding environment. The main topics discussed in this paper concern (i) performing a systematic mapping of the marine seafloors, (ii) processing the output maps to detect and classify potential archaeological targets and finally (iii) developing dissemination systems with the purpose of creating virtual scenes as a photorealistic and informative representation of the surveyed underwater sites.
