A new region detection and segmentation method is presented for performing tissue type classification and quantification. The original image data are transformed to the samples of a sample vector. The covariance matrix of this sample vector and its eigenvalues are computed. These eigenvalues are inputed into the information criterion of minimum description length to determine the region numbers. Then a modified K-mean algorithm and Bayesian classifier are utilized to segment image into the regions. This method does not need image model, considers the spatial correlations among the pixels, and is much faster than the model- based approaches.

This paper presents a new pipelined microprocessor-based architecture (PMA) using On-The Fly processing. The effectiveness of the PMA has been investigated for several applications such as database operations and very large databases using WORM (Write-Once-Read-Many) optical disk technology. In this paper, a pipelined information retrieval algorithm and a pipelined join algorithm are presented and their complexities are analyzed. Extensive simulations of these algorithms have been conducted on an emulated PMA on an AT&T parallel machine. Parallel implementations of these algorithms have been also considered for comparison purposes. © 1994 IEEE.

To reach higher compression ratios in video sequence coding the demands posed on the motion estimation module become greater and greater. In this paper we present a motion estimation scheme which gives a motion field defined on every block (typical 8 by 8 or 16 by 16) and resembles very well the real motion in the scene. In more complex coding schemes constraints were added to obtain better visual quality. The proposed algorithm is a `one-pass' algorithm and is not explicitly based on any statistical model. A classification procedure on a predefined number of motion vector candidates defines the final motion field. An overview is given of the concept of using global information to calculate the motion vector field. A thorough description of the new algorithm is given and some simulation results are presented on real sequences. Further research on this algorithm will be done to use it in a segmentation based codec for complex scenes.

Linda, a general purpose coordination language, has been used to make a language parallel. Based on a logically shared tuplespace, Linda poses difficulties to be efficiently implemented on a distributed multiprocessor system. This paper reports our approach to solve the problem: processors are divided into groups, and each group has a group manager to provide a local view of global tuplespace, and handles the tuplespace operations incurred by processors within the group. To maintain the consistency and correctness of the Linda tuplespace operations, we propose the algorithms of a group manager. We also implement the algorithms on a network of transputers, and show the experiment results. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1994.

This paper presents efficient methodologies to extract information from tabular drawings representing telephone cable interconnections. These tables include records of cable counts, cables in service, assignment charts, and cable running and wiring lists. An interesting problem in these drawings is that the changes to the data are occasionally recorded by crossing out entries and appending the changes rather than redrawing the entire documents. The objective of the work described here is the extraction of information contained in these table structured documents to facilitate the creation of a computer database. Our software system makes use of contextual information in these drawings (e.g., a particular line pattern is used to represent repeated entries, ignore crossed-out entries, etc.). The system uses features like inter-line spacing, length of lines, line orientation, and start and end locations of the lines to detect the diagonal lines and vertical lines with demarcations. Experimental results are also included.

Image Understanding is more important in medical imaging than ever, particularly where real-time automatic inspection, screening and classification systems are installed. Skeleton and distance transformations are among the common operations that extract useful information from binary images and aid in Image Understanding. The distance transformation describes the objects in an image by labeling every pixel in each object with the distance to its nearest boundary. The skeleton algorithm starts from the distance transformation and finds the set of pixels that have a locally maximum label. The distance algorithm has to scan the entire image several times depending on the object width. For each pixel, the algorithm must access the neighboring pixels and find the maximum distance from the nearest boundary. It is a computational and memory access intensive procedure. In this paper, we propose a novel parallel approach to the distance transform and skeleton algorithms using the latest VLSI high- speed convolutional chips such as HNC's viP. The algorithm speed is dependent on the object's width and takes (k + [(k-1)/3]) * 7 milliseconds for a 512 X 512 image with k being the maximum distance of the largest object. All objects in the image will be skeletonized at the same time in parallel.

Measured data are inherently inaccurate. Operations done on data for defining, visualizing, manipulating and analyzing object information should attempt to retain these inaccuracies as accurately as possible. The theory of fuzzy sets is a proper mathematical vehicle for this purpose. In this attempt, topological notions such as adjacency, connectedness, and boundary need to be developed starting from fuzzy sets. We develop such a framework in this paper and present algorithms for finding fuzzy connected components and boundaries in digital imagery. We demonstrate the usefulness of these algorithms in medical applications, particularly in separating objects that come close together which are otherwise difficult to segment using hard (non-fuzzy) criteria.

Various approaches have been proposed over the years for using contextual and linguistic information to improve the recognition rates of existing OCR systems. However, there is an intermediate level of information that is currently underutilized for this task: confidence measures derived from the recognition system. This paper describes a high-performance recognition system that utilizes identification of field type coupled with field-level disambiguation and a spell-correction algorithm to significantly improve raw recognition outputs. This paper details the implementation of a high-accuracy machine-print character recognition system based on backpropagation neural networks. The system makes use of neural net confidences at every stage to make decisions and improve overall performance. It employs disambiguation rules and a robust spell-correction algorithm to enhance recognition. These processing techniques have led to substantial improvements of recognition rates in large scale tests on images of postal addresses.

Computation of ventricular volume and the diagnostic quantities like ejection-fraction ratio, heart output, mass, etc. requires detection of myocardial boundaries. The problem of segmenting an image into separate regions is one of the most significant problems in vision. Terzopoulos et al., have proposed an approach to detect the contour regions of complex shapes, assuming a user selected an initial contour not very far from the desired solution. We propose an optimal dynamic programming (DP) based method to detect contours. It is exact and not iterative. We first consider a list of uncertainty for each point selected by the user, wherein the point is allowed to move. Then, a search window is created from two consecutive lists. We then apply a dynamic programming (DP) algorithm to obtain the optimal contour passing through these lists of uncertainty, optimally utilizing the given information. For tracking, the final contour obtained at one frame is sampled and used as initial points for the next frame. Then, the same DP process is applied. We have demonstrated the algorithms on natural objects in a large spectrum of applications, including interactive segmentation of the regions of interest in medical images.
