The Australian Defence Science and Technology Organisation is developing a single-platform sensor fusion test-bed based around an experimental X-band generic pulse Doppler radar. Initial research will examine real-time fusion of amplitude monopulse radar azimuth and elevation and video position estimates and the tracking ability of the combined sensor system. The addition of further signal processing and sensors will allow experimental verification of a variety of sensor fusion and management algorithms. Examples of preliminary data are shown and the continuing development of the test-bed and its applications are discussed.< >

The complexity of rotorcraft missions involving operations close to the ground result in high pilot workload. In order to allow a pilot time to perform mission-oriented tasks, sensor-aiding and automation of some of the guidance and control functions is highly desirable. Images from an electro-optical sensor provide a covert way of detecting objects in the flight path of a low-flying helicopter. Passive ranging consists of processing a sequence of images using techniques based on optical flow computation and recursive estimation. The passive ranging algorithm has to extract obstacle information from imagery at rates varying from five to thirty or more frames per second depending on the helicopter speed. We have implemented and tested the passive ranging algorithm off-line using helicopter images. However, the real-time data and computational requirements of the algorithm are beyond the capability of any off-the-shelf microprocessor or digital signal processor. This paper describes the computational requirements of the algorithm and uses parallel processing technology to meet this requirement. Various issues in the selection of a parallel processing architecture are discussed and four different computer architectures are evaluated regarding their suitability to process the algorithm in real-time. Based on this evaluation, we conclude that real-time passive ranging is a realistic goal and can be achieved within a short time.< >

This paper describes how fusion between thermal and range imaging allows us to discriminate different types of materials in outdoor scenes. First, we analyze how pure viSiOfl segmentation algorithms applied to thermal images allow discriminating materials such as rock and sand. Second, we show how combining thermal and range information allows us to better discriminate rocks from sand. Third, as an application, we examine how an autonomous legged robot can use these techniques to explore other planets.

We describe the interfacing methods between our departments RIS (Radiological information System) and PACS database. Sharing information has become an increasingly important issue for both systems. RIS study information should be available at the PACS workstation to complete the image description. Patient scheduling, admission and discharge information are critical to PACS for improving image routing and storage management algorithms. The design of the interface between the RIS and the PACS database involves the development of some standardization methods. These include the network communication protocol between the two database servers, the language mapping operations, the database result format and the error handling. The implementation of the interface is in two steps. In the first one, a subset of RIS data is automatically transmitted to the PACS database when some relevant events occur in the RIS. In a second phase, the user at the PACS workstation can directly initiate queries to the RIS. The PACS SQL server (UNIX based) sends SQL network requests as ASCII text to the RIS MUMPS database server (VAX based). The RIS server translates the SQL requests to MUMPS, executes the statements and returns ASCII results to the SQL server. We have been able to exchange information between the RIS and the PACS display programs. RIS text reports can be displayed on PACS workstations. RIS information can be used into pre-fetch algorithms.

Presents a new method for the separation of merged text/form-structure components in forms. The technique described uses a modified version of the Hough transform to detect the structure of the form. The closed contours of the connected components are approximated by piecewise linear line segments. The parameters of the Hesse normal form of each line segment serve as input for the Hough transform. Compared to the vectorized boundary of characters, the lines of the form structure consist of appreciable more line segments with the same orientation and distance. So, the problem of the form structure detection in the database of line segments can be reduced to the detection of local peaks in the Hough space. Subsequent processing steps reconstruct the remaining contour fragments to characters.< >
