In the last two decades deep learning has attracted a lot of attention internationally, solving problems in different application domains and achieving results beyond expectations. For example it has been applied in bioinformatics, game playing, imaging processing, object detection, robotic and drug discovery. One of the main reasons for the incremented use of deep learning algorithms is the need to implement approaches for the analysis of the large amount of data produces in every field, bringing researchers to dedicate their work to deep learning development. One of the main topics discussed up today is the possibility to run the training of deep models in a parallel fashion, so to reduce the time otherwise needed to find the hyperparameters and to make the achievement of the result faster. © 2019 IEEE.

As the development of science and technology is increasing rapidly, there is one research method that plays an important role in micro-scale measurements, namely Brownian motion. Brownian motion is a phenomenon of the random movement of several particles that can be observed under the objective lens of a microscope due to collisions between particles and surrounding liquid molecules. In this study, the author will observe how the Brownian motion method can be used to determine the liquid viscosity value through the relation between the displacement of polymer particles in various concentration of the solutions and the size of polymer particles that will be used in the observation. The Brownian motion-based system was made with the aim of creating a method of measuring the viscosity of a liquid with equipment that is easier and simpler by utilizing the minimum liquid quantity (in microliters) rather than the conventional methods such as using a viscometer where the quantity of liquid used is large (in milliliters). Measurements were made using the design of optical systems such as camera (Zeiss Axiocam 105 Color) and microscope objective lens (50x magnification). Through the optical system, the movement of particles is then recorded, and the recording image results are processed using image processing algorithms in MATLAB. By using the correlation function, the trajectory of particle movement can be traced until particle displacement data are obtained for each frame (in second). From the experiments that have been conducted using 10-40% glycerin concentrations and 1-micron particle, it shows that the measured glycerin viscosities have good accuracies with the errors no more than 10%. For the measured NaCl viscosities with the concentration variations of 0%, 50%, and 100% using 1- micron particle, it also shows that it has good accuracy with the errors no more than 7%.

License plate recognition (LPR) is one of the essential components in intelligent transportation systems. Although the image processing algorithms for LPR have been extensively studied in the past several years, the recognition performance is still not satisfactory especially in unconstrained complex scenes. In order to tackle this issue, a novel deep multi-task learning-based method is proposed in this paper by introducing contextual information in multiple license plate frames. Specifically, an end-to-end trainable multi-task architecture, namely IQ-STAN, is developed by joint license plate recognition and image quality scoring. Moreover, we propose an image quality-guided spatio-temporal attention mechanism, which is utilized in the frame-level feature representation during the phase of plate recognition. Extensive experiments are conducted and the competitive results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework.

Intel's novel Loihi processing chip has been used to explore new information exploitation techniques. Specifically, we analyzed two types of data (optical and radar). These data modalities and associated machine learning algorithms were used to showcase the ability of the system to address real world problems, such as object detection and classification. Intel's fully digital Loihi design is inspired by biological processes and brain functions. Neuromorphic architectures, such as Loihi, promise to improve computational efficiency for various machine learning tasks with a realizable path toward implementation into many systems, e.g., airborne computing for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems, and/or future autonomous vehicles and household appliances. With the current software development kit, it is possible to train an artificial neural network model in a common deep learning framework such as Keras and quantize the model weights for a simplistic, direct translation onto the Loihi hardware. The radar imagery analyzed included a seven-vehicle class target set, which was processed at a rate of 9.5 images per second and with an overall accuracy of 90.1%. The optical data included a binary (two classes), and another nine-class data set. The binary classifier processed the optical data at a rate of 12.8 images per second with 94.0% accuracy. The nine classes optical data was processed at a rate 12.9 images per second and 79.7% accuracy. Lastly, the system used ~6 Watts of total power with ~0.6 Watts being utilized by the neuromorphic cores. The inferencing energy used to classify each image varied between 14.9 and 63.2 millijoules/image.

Different from the traditional RGB images, the hyperspectral sensors provide near-infrared signal which is gradually being applied in many fields. In the early days, hyperspectral signals were more commonly used for military purposes, but with the increase in optical spectroscopic technology, hyperspectral instruments were gradually applied to the general public, including medical images, food and agriculture. In the medical field, the hyperspectral signal can be used for public identification of unknown drugs, and after the detection of hyperspectral instruments and algorithms, the medication information is provided to the users. The experimental results show that our proposed method is effective to the drug classification using hyperspectral sensors. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has become a basic non-invasive tool in diagnosing and following different types of eye diseases. This technique can produce high-resolution cross-sectional images of retinal layers. Outer retinal tubulation (ORT) is one of the detectable biomarker by SD-OCT. ORTs defined as hyporeflective, tubular structures with hyperreflective borders or reversed within the retina and appear in many retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Our aim is to develop an automatic method that can efficiently characterize ORT biomarker. Detection of this biomarker can be challenging because of its variable size, location, and reflectivity. In this paper, we present a fully convolutional U-Net based architecture to detect ORT. The proposed approach is evaluated using a dataset annotated by ophthalmologists. One of the main challenges was the limited amount of training data that we resolve with real-time augmentation during training and using nested cross-validation. Our method achieved near human performance reaching an overall object-based recall score of 0.847 and Dice score of 0.579 on the test set. © 2019 IEEE.

The inspection of defects is an important task in many industrial sectors: from metals to plastics, passing through glass and other materials, these products need to satisfy some aesthetical and quality requirements. Flaws can arise in many different forms: spot of different color, crack, incompleteness, excess and/or lack of material are just some examples of defects deriving from the industrial manufacturing process, which can lead to discard the component or the piece examined. These defects are recognizable by the human eye, but some issues like fatigue, illness of the operator and incorrect lighting of the samples can be tough obstacles in obtaining the right selection of the pieces. To detect faulty pieces and in order to avoid wasting compliant pieces instead, a computer based visual inspection system has been designed and implemented. As benchmark samples we adopt the outer lenses of automotive rear lamps. The surface of an outer lens needs an extreme precision manufacturing procedure and the absence of defects is essential for the quality of the final product. The aim of the work involves the ideation and commissioning of a setup to extract and analyze information about the flaws present in an outer lens, exploiting different image processing techniques depending on the nature of the defects.

Image gradient, as a preprocessing step is an essential tool in image processing in many research areas such as edge detection, segmentation, smoothing, inpainting, etc. In the present paper, we develop a new gradient by integrated the quaternion framework with LPA-ICI (local polynomial approximation - the intersection of confidence intervals) based on anisotropic gradient concepts for the color image processing applications. Computer simulations on the Berkeley Segmentation Dataset show that the new quaternion anisotropic gradient exhibits fewer color artifacts compared to state-of-the-art techniques including well-knowledge gradient operators. © 2019, Society for Imaging Science and Technology.
