We present research into the capacity and spectral efficiency of various spatial and mode division multiplexed transmission schemes in multimode optical fibres, including MIMO schemes based linearly polarized (LP) modes and orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes. We estimate their spectral efficiency by calculating the transmission matrix and considering mode coupling under different schemes. We also consider the signal-processing prefix for LP-MIMO and OAM based technologies to calculate the effective spectral efficiency. Simulation results show LP-MIMO using step-index fibre can support higher spectral efficiency than both LP-MIMO with graded-index fibre and OAM, while LP-MIMO with graded-index fibre has similar levels of spectral efficiency as OAM. We further compare the computational resources required to support the signal processing algorithms in order to achieve certain amount of capacity or spectral efficiency and reveal the scaling of computational resources with capacity in different MDM schemes. Considering the implementation of MIMO algorithms and any processing required to support spatial light modulator (SLM) based optical crosstalk equalization schemes, we demonstrate that OAM-based MDM has the lowest computational resource requirement and offers a much higher spectral efficiency with limited computational resource in both processing power and memory size requirements resulting from intermodal group velocity dispersion in multimode fibres. We also show that OAM based schemes could save significant signal processing energy overhead due to its low computational resource requirement.

Lane detection and tracking is essential concern in vision based autonomous vehicle navigation. This paper proposes a novel method based on probabilistic Hough transform and motion vector based analysis for detecting and tracking lane and lane departures. It addresses drawbacks of current systems under hazy situations with learning method based on previous tracking records of the system. In this method relevant lane mark features are extracted based on color variations. Therefore used HSL color model which gives higher color contrast of road surface and the markings. In order to reduce computation, processing algorithms are applied only to the region of interest (ROI). Edges of the selected regions are extracted with Canny Edge Detection. Since lane markings are made with set of straight lines, straight lines are extracted with Probabilistic Hough Transform. Extracted lines are analyzed to detect lane. To monitor lane departures vehicle's motion is detected and tracked based on motion vector analysis with Lucas Kanade optical Flow algorithm. Previous detection records are used to track the lane continuously in hazy situations and provide prediction on approximate lane for the roads without lane markings. Experiments were performed on set of videos taken from vehicles' front camera mounted on dashboard. According to the experiments the proposed algorithm has 81.9% of sensitivity in lane detection and 63.5% in approximate lane predictions for the roads without lane markings. Lane detection algorithm has 83% precision, 68% recall and 0.75 F1 score with threshold brightness value 140. Algorithm can further improved to guide the autonomous vehicles to take accurate decisions on selecting safety lane to drive ahead in different situations. © 2018 IEEE.

We introduce two novel tree search algorithms that use a policy to guide search. The first algorithm is a best-first enumeration that uses a cost function that allows us to prove an upper bound on the number of nodes to be expanded before reaching a goal state. We show that this best-first algorithm is particularly well suited for "needle-in-a-haystack" problems. The second algorithm is based on sampling and we prove an upper bound on the expected number of nodes it expands before reaching a set of goal states. We show that this algorithm is better suited for problems where many paths lead to a goal. We validate these tree search algorithms on 1,000 computer-generated levels of Sokoban, where the policy used to guide the search comes from a neural network trained using A3C. Our results show that the policy tree search algorithms we introduce are competitive with a state-of-the-art domain-independent planner that uses heuristic search.

We show that dispersive propagation of light has properties that can be exploited for extracting features from the waveforms. This discovery is spearheading development of a new class of digital algorithms for feature extraction from digital images with unique and superior properties compared to conventional algorithms. In certain cases, these algorithms have the potential to be an energy efficient and scalable substitute to synthetically fashioned computational techniques in practice today.

Improving the processing of machine vision images of robotic systems in the Arctic

The transformation of the development of the Arctic is due to modern robotic systems. The use of unmanned vehicles in many industries in the Arctic provides an array of photo and video information. Accuracy of image analysis and pattern recognition is enhanced by image preprocessing. However, the existing binarization algorithms are not universal for images with different distortions and loss of information. The accuracy of binarization algorithms depends on many factors, such as shadows, uneven lighting, low contrast, noise, etc. Images with different characteristics of light and noise are simulated in order to model various lighting conditions on information from digital cameras of robotic systems. The paper investigates global and adaptive image binarization algorithms. The binarized images were obtained using these algorithms and the results of binarized images recognition are compared by an optical character recognition system. An analysis of the comparison results showed that for images made in poor lighting conditions or images with low contrast, or images with high noise levels, adaptive binarization algorithms are better suited. However, in most cases it is not possible to obtain fully correctly recognized *** paper proposes a new binarization method based on artificial neural networks. The process of creating an artificial neural network is shown, include the parameters for determining the class of a pixel, the adjustment of weights, the architecture of an artificial neural network. A comparison of the proposed artificial neural network with existing image binarization algorithms demonstrate that in most cases the artificial neural network has the result of image processing at the level of adaptive algorithms or higher. The proposed method of images binarization based on the image color characteristics analysis allows to solve image recognition tasks by robotized systems.

The data about the effect of image quality on accuracy of information parameters are presented. Studies on accuracy of measuring characteristics of objects in their images depending on image quality are described. Studies showed that accuracy of measurement algorithms improves with an increase in sample sizes of frames in the optoelectronic system (OES). Image quality is improved by processing the frame samples with algorithms for increasing resolution and reducing noise levels, both in single-point and multi-position OESs based on digital cameras with matrix photodetectors. The maximum effect of an increase in information content of the image and accuracy of measuring algorithms is determined by variations in the pixel structure of each image in the region of brightness gradient boundaries. In the single-point OESs which ensure high quality of optical images without noise factors and variations of other external parameters, the optimal number of frames in the OES is four.

This article describes the problems and possible solutions for optimization of medical images storing, providing stable and secure access, based on the distributed warehouse for huge volumes of data with different levels of access providing. The standard for working with medical images is the DICOM format, which allows storing images in good quality. The main problem of data storing in DICOM format is caused by the fact that one investigation can has more than one-gigabyte volume of data and consist of thousands of images. In Moldova in 2015 was launched "DICOM Network" project, whose goal is to provide access to investigations for medical staff with the appropriate access rights, as well as to patients to their personal radiography investigations. Now the system collects and processing more than 500 gigabytes of data every month. In the article, we describe and analyze possible solutions for optimizing data storing and processing workflows.

Practical application of optical vortex in a method of three-dimensional profilometry with nanoscale resolution was considered. It was shown that phase analysis of coherent light beam carrying axial optical vortex allow to retrieve information about sample surface relief. High spatial resolution caused by vortex helical phase sensitivity to disturbances in wave front after reflection or spreading through studying sample, which can be optically transparent or have a reflecting surface. This method applicable for non-destructive testing of live cells and biological tissues in real-time regime with exceeding optical diffraction limit. Computer processing of vortex interferograms allow to achieve a vertical resolution down to 1,75 nm. Specially designed optical scheme reduces an environment influence, in particular, vibration, misalignment of test sample and its local anisotropy and provides the possibility of investigating surfaces of large linear dimensions. The prospective tasks of automated systems creation for monitoring of surface quality were proposed, in particular those that will could be developed with methods based on singular optics and phase singularities.

We propose an optical system to enable automatic landings of RPAS. With the current infrastructure, automatic landings of aircraft in general are only possible on airports with certified ILS CAT III installations, since GBAS CAT III is not yet certified. As these installations are rare and the no-visibility-capability is not required most of the time, an optical system capable of generating guidance data for the part of the approach not being covered by a CAT I system can close that gap.
