As massive open online courses (MOOCs) and online intelligent tutoring systems(ITS) have become increasingly widespread, the number of learners enrolled in online courses has shown explosive growth. However, these learners are likely to have acquired knowledge from diverse educational and vocational backgrounds. Therefore, it is unwise to apply the same criteria and assessment questions to assess all learners' abilities without differentiation. Therefore, the demand for the adaptive arrangement of questions for online learners is ever critical. Deep learning is a new increasingly popular approach for handling extraordinarily complex problems such as image recognition and natural language processing. In this research, we use neural networks to forecast learners' multi-question performance on new test questions and propose a new concept called predictable property for the first time to explain the reasons why neural networks can be applied to predict learners' multi-question performance based on their previous question responses. This approach means that fewer questions need to be answered by learners although more information can be gathered about them through the use of deep-learning-based techniques. Finally, we use both artificial datasets generated by cognitive models and three real-world datasets to validate the algorithm's performance. Experiments show a promising research result when using deep learning to predict learner performance in multi-question tasks and can ultimately provide more accurate adaptive tests for learners. © 2017 IEEE.

Nature-inspired approaches are powerful methods to solve many tough optimization problems. This paper proposes the two optimization approaches named, Big bang-big crunch and Firefly optimization algorithm to solve the optical channel-allocation problem in the optical wavelength division multiplexing systems by using the optimal Golomb ruler sequences. The simulation results conclude that both approaches outperform the other two existing classical approaches, i.e. Extended quadratic congruence and Search algorithm and one existing nature-inspired approach i.e. Genetic algorithms in terms of ruler length and total optical bandwidth. © 2016 IEEE.

Nowadays, the imaging techniques followed by advanced image processing algorithms become an indispensable part of diagnostic and surgical procedures. During recent years, an increasing demand for intra-surgical modalities can be noticed. The work aims at modelling the deformation of human skin surface caused by a navigated stick based on the point cloud acquired by a Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera. The data acquired by ToF and optical tracker are synchronized. Then, the skin deformation is modelled by applying a physics engine. The model evaluation is based on a Hausdorff distance. The results prove the applicability of the developed workflow.

The article is focused on a particular aspect of classification, namely the imbalance of recognized classes. The paper contains a comparative study of results of musical symbols classification using known algorithms: k-nearest neighbors, k-means, Mahalanobis minimal distance, and decision trees. Authors aim at addressing the problem of imbalanced pattern recognition. First, we theoretically analyze difficulties entailed in the classification of music notation symbols. Second, in the enclosed case study we investigate the fitness of named single classifiers on real data. Conducted experiments are based on own implementations of named algorithms with all necessary image processing tasks. Results are highly satisfying.

- There are systems developed to assist the visually impaired in grocery shopping. The developed systems require physical work from the users, wireless connections and products database to obtain the products information. Here comes the need for a system that assist the visually impaired person in grocery shopping without any additional devices. The system should use object recognition algorithms instead of wireless connections and database to recognize products. In the paper, a software system was created to solve the problem of assisting the visually impaired in grocery shopping. The created software accomplished only the mission of recognizing the grocery products on shelves. The paper recommends implementing a shopping cart consists of three cameras installed vertically on one side of the cart. We conducted a comparison between two object recognition algorithms to recognize products on the aisle shelves. A multimodal system created to fuse the results of the used object recognition algorithms. © CSREA Press.

The necessity to process interlaced images in surveillance, reconnaissance, or further computer vision areas should be a topic of the past. But, for different reasons, it is not. So, there are situations in practice, in which interlaced images have to be processed. Since a lot of algorithms strongly degrade when working with such images directly, a usual method is to double or interpolate image lines in order to discard one of the two enclosed image frames. This is efficient but leads to weak results, in which half of the original information is lost. Alternatively, a lot of valuable computation time has to be spent to solve the highly complex motion compensation task in order to improve the results significantly. In this paper, an efficient algorithm is presented to solve this dilemma. First, the algorithm solves the complex 2-D mapping problem using the best state-of-the-art optical flow method that could be found for this purpose. But, of course, for different physical reasons there are regions which cannot properly be handled by optical flow by itself. Therefore, an efficient post-processing method detects and removes remaining artifacts afterwards, which is the main contribution of this paper. This method is based on color interpolation incorporating local image structure. The presented results document the overall performance of the approach with respect to obtained image quality and calculation time. The method is easy to implement and offers a valuable pre-processing for a lot of computer vision tasks.

LIDAR is a popular remote sensing method used to examine the surface of the Earth. LIDAR instruments use light in the form of a pulsed laser to measure ranges (variable distances) and generate vast amounts of precise three dimensional point data describing the shape of the Earth. processing large collections of point cloud data and combining them with auxiliary GIS data remain an open research problem. Past research in the area of geographic information systems focused on handling large collections of complex geometric objects stored on disk and most algorithms have been designed and studied in a single-thread setting even though multi-core systems are well established. In this paper, we describe parallel alternatives of known algorithms for evaluating spatial selections over point clouds and spatial joins between point clouds and rectangle collections. © 2016 ACM.

Digital signal processing (DSP) has been proved to be a successful technology recently in high speed and high spectrum-efficiency optical short-haul and access network, which enables high performances based on digital equalizations and compensations. In this paper, we investigate advanced DSP at the transmitter and receiver side for signal pre-equalization and post-equalization in an optical access network. A novel DSP-based digital and optical pre-equalization scheme has been proposed for bandwidth-limited high speed short-distance communication system, which is based on the feedback of receiver-side adaptive equalizers, such as least-mean-squares (LMS) algorithm and constant or multi-modulus algorithms (CMA, MMA). Based on this scheme, we experimentally demonstrate 400GE on a single optical carrier based on the highest ETDM 120-GBaud PDM-PAM-4 signal, using one external modulator and coherent detection. A line rate of 480-Gb/s is achieved, which enables 20% forward-error correction (FEC) overhead to keep the 400-Gb/s net information rate. The performance after fiber transmission shows large margin for both short range and metro/regional networks. We also extend the advanced DSP for short haul optical access networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and demonstrate a high speed multi-band CAP-WDM-PON system on intensity modulation, direct detection and digital equalizations. A hybrid modified cascaded MMA post-equalization schemes are used to equalize the multi-band CAP-mQAM signals. Using this scheme, we successfully demonstrates 550Gb/s high capacity WDM-PON system with 11 WDM channels, 55 sub-bands, and 10-Gb/s per user in the downstream over 40-km SMF.
