Velocity and direction estimation plays an important role in crowd analytic and behavior recognition. This paper presents an overview of the literature published for motion detection and estimation techniques. The work particularly focuses on optical flow techniques such as Lucas & Kanade and Horn & Schunck methods which describe the direction and velocity of pixels in a sequence of two consecutive images. A two-dimensional velocity vector, carrying information of the direction and the velocity of motion is assigned to each pixel in a given place in the image. optical flow method is extensively used for motion estimation due to its ability to compute the velocities accurately. The improvement in computational efficiency and increasing interest in robust and accurate motion estimation algorithms lead to increase in the use of optical flow in crowd analytic applications. We investigate the implementation of optical flow methods in the published work and we provide comparison between these techniques qualitatively as well as quantitatively. The qualitative analysis illustrates the optical flow performance in terms of rigid motion, non-rigid motion, motion discontinuities, noise and different light condition. Quantitative analysis is in terms of computational time and accuracy.

Estimating the observer position in 3D environment using a visual image data is called the ego-motion. This method consists of three steps: in the first step, feature points of image are detected;in the second step, optical flow information is obtained;in the third and final step appropriate transformation parameters are calculated using the optimization method. Especially in enclosed areas where GPS can not be used or high estimation errors occured, in underground systems, visual egomotion is critically important. As well as the precise location estimation, providing a low cost solution is one of the superior properties of egomotion method. In this study, different egomotion methods has been observed, the numerical results in noisy and noiseless environment obtained by comparing the accuracy of algorithms presented in the table.

Now-a-day vehicle detection has been an active research field in image processing. This research area interest is increase due to high traffic problems and limited roads and space. This paper described an algorithms and important methods to handle the high traffic volume. We described some important factors which are treated as an input i.e. Road Database, Global DEM, and Images. The road data base includes maps and information of roads and global DEM provide the height information of the image object. By using this all the information we calculate the disparity map. This disparity map is used to exclude elevated object like buildings and vegetation. In this paper we use two concept i.e. Histogram of oriented Gradients (HoG) and disparity mapping. The Histogram of oriented Gradients (HoG) concept is used to classify the images. We introduced here two new concepts, 1) To treat shady areas differently to identify the object covered by shady region and 2) To detect wrong direction moving object.

Assisted living for people with disabilities remains a current research challenge. Many systems have been developed to help disabled and frail people gain their self-sufficiency during their activities of daily living (ADL). In this article, we propose a new design concept to help visually impaired (vi) elderly patients move in their home environment. The system is made of a light-weight medical walker where sensory components and processing electronics are installed and operated. Behavioral and environmental information are collected using proper sensors mounted on walker's frame. Direction data are provided using audible notification. The system uses a hardware guiding technique based on ultrasonic and optical sensors for obstacle detection and accelerometer for fall and vibration detection. The algorithm developed for this purpose triggers an audible notification to alert the patient if there is an obstacle ahead. While many developed walkers are complex, expensive and require training to be used, our electronic walker gathers flexibility, reliability, ease of use and future expendability. Unlike other products, the electronic walker is also suitable for indoor and outdoor use. The results obtained after testing the system proved effectiveness. The use of low cost components makes our walker affordable as a final product.

It is becoming increasingly important in both the defence and security domains to conduct persistent wide area surveillance (PWAS) of large populations of targets. Wide Area Motion Imagery (WAMI) is a key technique for achieving this wide area surveillance. The recent development of multi-million pixel sensors has provided sensors with wide field of view replete with sufficient resolution for detection and tracking of objects of interest to be achieved across these extended areas of interest. WAMI sensors simultaneously provide high spatial and temporal resolutions, giving extreme pixel counts over large geographical areas. The high temporal resolution is required to enable effective tracking of targets. The provision of wide area coverage with high frame rates generates data deluge issues;these are especially profound if the sensor is mounted on an airborne platform, with finite data-link bandwidth and processing power that is constrained by size, weight and power (SWAP) limitations. These issues manifest themselves either as bottlenecks in the transmission of the imagery off-board or as latency in the time taken to analyse the data due to limited computational processing power. This paper describes recent research to address these limitations and realise for the UK a WAMI system capable of providing real time situational awareness. The WAMI project developed a processing architecture for applying the automatic video Moving Target Indicator (VMTI) processing developed for ground-based applications to airborne video imagery. In the WAMI air trial, the modified video tracking algorithms were successfully demonstrated in an airborne collect and shown to be capable of extracting salient track information, in real time, from a composite live streaming video source. This result has de-risked a key technical component on the route to realising a WAMI system that can exploit all its gathered information in real time.

Computation of optical flow is a fundamental step in computer vision applications. However, due to its high complexity, it is difficult to compute a high-accuracy optical flow field in real time. This paper proposes a parallel computing approach for fast computation of high-accuracy optical flow field. It is specially designed for Tilera, a typical many-core processor with 36 tiles. By efficiently exploiting the advantages of the mesh architecture of Tilera, and by appropriately handling the parallelism inherent in the optical flow computation, the proposed implemention is able to significantly reduce the computation time while keep a low power consumption. Experiment shows that, for a 640×480 image, the computation time is only 0. 80 seconds per frame. It is 2. 56 times faster than on a typical CPU i3-3240 (3. 4GHz), and the power consumption as less as 1/6. Experimental results also show that the proposed parallel approach is highly scalable for variable requirements on computation speeds and power consumptions, since it can flexibly selects a proper number of computing cores. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

We perform a short survey of image thresholding methods for very specific task, and assess their performance comparison. We analyse performance of adaptive thresholding methods concerning segmentation of immunonegative cells of follicular lymphoma tissue samples stained with 3,3'-Diaminobenzidine&Haematoxylin. We use artificial images based on experimental images that greatly simulates real samples and simplifies process of evaluation. We chose 8 methods of adaptive threshold segmentation, with different approach. They were applied to 6 different monochromatic images derived from original RGB images, by splitting layers, conversion to Lab colour space and colour deconvolution. Evaluation of the results was performed with basic statistical measures as sensitivity and specificity along with Jaccard's coefficient. We identify the thresholding algorithms with superior performance. Collected results will be used to design the new better method based on this approach.
