Recent advances of ToF depth sensor devices enables us to easily retrieve scene depth data with high frame rates. However, the resolution of the depth map captured from these devices is much lower than that of color images and the depth data suffers from the optical noise effects. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm that upsamples depth map captured by ToF depth cameras and reduces noise. The upsampling is carried out by applying plane based interpolation to the groups of points similar to planar structures and depth variance based joint bilateral upsampling to curved or bumpy surface points. For dividing the depth map into piecewise planar areas, we apply superpixel segmentation and graph component labeling. In order to distinguish planar areas and curved areas, we evaluate the reliability of detected plane structures. Compared with other state-of-the-art algorithms, our method is observed to produce an upsampled depth map that is smoothed and closer to the ground truth depth map both visually and numerically. Since the algorithm is parallelizable, it can work in real-time by utilizing highly parallel processing capabilities of modern commodity GPUs.

An algorithm for extracting material shape and spatial information from non-uniform background, and for generating object skeletons for statistical two-dimensional experiments using random walk approach, is presented. This finds applications in textile analysis and microscopic analysis of various materials like hairs and allows for further precise determination of textile yarn dimensions as well as other geometrical characteristics like a fractal dimension.

We provide a new analysis framework for the adversarial multi-armed bandit problem. Using the notion of convex smoothing, we define a novel family of algorithms with minimax optimal regret guarantees. First, we show that regular-ization via the Tsallis entropy, which includes EXP3 as a special case, matches the O(NT~(1/2)) minimax regret with a smaller constant factor. Second, we show that a wide class of perturbation methods achieve a near-optimal regret as low as O(NT log N~(1/2)), as long as the perturbation distribution has a bounded hazard function. For example, the Gumbel, Weibull, Frechet, Pareto, and Gamma distributions all satisfy this key property and lead to near-optimal algorithms.

Converting Handwritten documents to its machine written counterpart using optical Character Recognition has many benefits like easier formatting, less storage apace, and automatic translation if needed. However, it has many noise difficulties; one of them is the ruled lines intersection with the text. In this paper, we introduce a trial to detect these ruled lines and remove them without affecting the text strokes significantly in grey-level image documents. The detection stage use Hough Transform in four squared sub-windows. And the removal stage employs intensity histogram and its entropy to isolate the text. The removal stage is followed by a morphological based enhancement for the resulting text. The proposed technique has been tested on several test real-world image documents and achieved very good results.

Gene expression data generated from microarray experiments are characterized by large number of genes or dimensions. Informative gene selection for performing clustering to discover useful phenotypes is a major issue as there is no class information available. In this paper, we propose a wrapper based feature selection approach to perform sample based clustering on gene expression data. The proposed work uses Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO) for best subset generation and k-means as wrapper algorithm for evaluating the subsets. Experimental results show that the features selected by this method is able to produce clusters of good quality. Clustering accuracy of 70-80% were obtained for different datasets.

Plenoptic (light-field) imaging is a technique that allows a simple CCD-based imaging device to acquire both spatially and angularly resolved information about the 鈥渓ight-field鈥?from a scene. It requires a microlens array to be placed between the objective lens and the sensor of the imaging device1 and the images under each microlens (which typically span many pixels) can be computationally post-processed to shift perspective, digital refocus, extend the depth of field, manipulate the aperture synthetically and generate a depth map from a single image. Some of these capabilities are rigid functions that do not depend upon the scene and work by manipulating and combining a well-defined set of pixels in the raw image. However, depth mapping requires specific features in the scene to be identified and registered between consecutive microimages. This process requires that the image has sufficient features for the registration, and in the absence of such features the algorithms become less reliable and incorrect depths are generated. The aim of this study is to investigate the generation of depth-maps from light-field images of scenes with insufficient features for accurate registration, using projected patterns to impose a texture on the scene that provides sufficient landmarks for the registration methods. © (2015) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).
