Velocity and direction estimation plays an important role in crowd analytic and behavior recognition. This paper presents an overview of the literature published for motion detection and estimation techniques. The work particularly focuses on optical flow techniques such as Lucas & Kanade and Horn & Schunck methods which describe the direction and velocity of pixels in a sequence of two consecutive images. A two-dimensional velocity vector, carrying information of the direction and the velocity of motion is assigned to each pixel in a given place in the image. optical flow method is extensively used for motion estimation due to its ability to compute the velocities accurately. The improvement in computational efficiency and increasing interest in robust and accurate motion estimation algorithms lead to increase in the use of optical flow in crowd analytic applications. We investigate the implementation of optical flow methods in the published work and we provide comparison between these techniques qualitatively as well as quantitatively. The qualitative analysis illustrates the optical flow performance in terms of rigid motion, non-rigid motion, motion discontinuities, noise and different light condition. Quantitative analysis is in terms of computational time and accuracy.

The problem of interpolation a set of data is an old one, but the demanding of flexibility and high speed in operating on-line and in real time processing need to find new methods and improve the old ones [1]. The main properties of B-spline functions offer the possibility to implement algorithms of interpolation in a faster and optimal manner. A function can be represented by B-spline functions with a set of coefficients. For interpolative signal reconstruction it is necessary to calculate those coefficients. In this paper, for cubic spline interpolation it is analyzed a known algorithm and some of his deficiencies. Also there are relieved some possibilities for developing new algorithms that could eliminate those problems. It is presented another way to determine the initial coefficients by using the polynomial representation on short intervals of the spline function and his derivatives. Based on this results are made several observations for further use in improving the algorithm.

In this paper, we compare performances of the constant modulus algorithm (CMA) and data-aided time domain equalization (DA-TDE) algorithm for mode demultiplexing in few mode transmission systems. Simulation results of 4×56 Gbit/s QPSK mode-division multiplexed system show that the maximum required OSNRs with CMA are less than that of DA-TDE by 0.8dB and 4.6dB for maximum coupling coefficient of 0.15 and 0.20.

optical character recognition systems (OCR) have been effectively developed for the recognition of printed characters. One such application is the identifying engine number and chassis number which is engraved on machine parts. Manual logging of serial numbers in industries is very tedious and a time consuming affair. Our proposed system is robust under poor illumination conditions. Our overall system is efficient and can be applied in realtime applications. Since OCR is well-studied area where powerful algorithms like Zidouri algorithm for letter segmentation, Blob detection algorithm for removal of unwanted areas and character extraction, Hilditch algorithm for Arabic character recognition already exists, our OCR based engraved character recognition yields more accurate results up to 99.99% accuracy. The paper explains how optical character recognition technique along with computer vision can be applied to identify engine number and chassis number which are engraved on two and four wheeler vehicles.

Electro-optical (EO) surveillance systems are capable of performing autonomous search, detection, tracking and designation of potential targets. The detection and tracking of target at long range is a challenge due to atmospheric degradation and background clutter. The detection process heavily depends on its image quality. Various types of image enhancement techniques are being exploited to improve the detection capability. The performance of these techniques varies with operational scenario as the surveillance is a very subjective process by nature. Reconfigurable architecture based upon FPGA has been chosen to implement real-time image enhancement, for improved range performance (detection/recognition/identification) of EO systems considering the scenarios such as naval and land platforms. The architectural design based on FPGA and real time implementation results for these image processing algorithms along with improvement in the quality of image has been presented.

Accurate spectrum sensing is very important for cognitive radio systems. In the cooperative spectrum sensing, the unreliable nodes will result in deterioration of detection performance. This paper focuses on the spectrum sensing in the case of unreliable nodes and proposes a weighted reliability cooperative spectrum sensing algorithm. In the algorithm, the global fusion center only chooses the cognitive nodes whose reliabilities are larger than the average one. The simulations and results show that the algorithm can improve the spectrum sensing performance effectively.

This paper presents an approach for parallel implementation of cross-correlation using the graphics processing unit (GPU). Cross-correlation is a central digital signal processing (DSP) algorithm with applications in many areas. In many cases in real time systems, a sequential implementation of the cross-correlation creates a performance bottleneck and prevents the systems from reaching the real time criterion. On the other hand, a GPU-based parallel implementation of the cross-correlation offers a solution to this problem. The proposed parallel implementation is integrated in an optical coherence tomography (OCT) system. As a result, the OCT system is able to generate up to 40 en-face images from different depths from semitransparent objects in real time. This number of images provides the necessary information when OCT is used in areas such as ophthalmology, where detailed imagery of the retina, the optic nerve, and other parts of the eye is essential for accurate diagnosis.

Now-a-day vehicle detection has been an active research field in image processing. This research area interest is increase due to high traffic problems and limited roads and space. This paper described an algorithms and important methods to handle the high traffic volume. We described some important factors which are treated as an input i.e. Road Database, Global DEM, and Images. The road data base includes maps and information of roads and global DEM provide the height information of the image object. By using this all the information we calculate the disparity map. This disparity map is used to exclude elevated object like buildings and vegetation. In this paper we use two concept i.e. Histogram of oriented Gradients (HoG) and disparity mapping. The Histogram of oriented Gradients (HoG) concept is used to classify the images. We introduced here two new concepts, 1) To treat shady areas differently to identify the object covered by shady region and 2) To detect wrong direction moving object.

Estimating the observer position in 3D environment using a visual image data is called the egomotion. This method consists of three steps: in the first step, feature points of image are detected; in the second step, optical flow information is obtained; in the third and final step appropriate transformation parameters are calculated using the optimization method. Especially in enclosed areas where GPS can not be used or high estimation errors occured, in underground systems, visual egomotion is critically important. As well as the precise location estimation, providing a low cost solution is one of the superior properties of egomotion method. In this study, different egomotion methods has been observed, the numerical results in noisy and noiseless environment obtained by comparing the accuracy of algorithms presented in the table.

Traditional video retrieval methods fail to meet technical challenges due to large and rapid growth of multimedia data, demanding effective retrieval systems. In the last decade Content Based video Retrieval (CBVR) has become more and more popular. The amount of lecture video data on the World Wide Web (WWW) is growing rapidly. Therefore, a more efficient method for video retrieval in WWW or within large video archives is urgently needed. This paper presents an implementation of automated video indexing and video search in large video database and also present personalized results. Proposed system works in three different phases, in the first phase video segmentation and key frame detection is performed to extract meaningful key frames. Secondly, OCR, HOG and ASR algorithms are applied over the keyframe to extract textual keyword. In the third phase, Color, Texture and Edge features are also extracted. Finally, search similarity measure is performed on the extracted features that are saved in SQL database and the output with personalised re-ranking results as per interest is presented to the users.
