optical character recognition (OCR) is a widely used technology to convert text images to editable text. Researchers already proposed many machine learning algorithms to address this problem. However, Bangla text recognition is highly challenging job for its complicated writing style, compound characters and highly diversified fonts. To address the segmentation problem we have proposed an algorithm namely Blob-Labeled character Segmentation (BLCS) that initiates with an extensive preprocessing to extract the characters from text. Our novel character segmentation procedure extracts characters maintaining 97.5% accuracy. Unsupervised feature learning becomes a powerful tool in machine learning nowadays. To increase the recognition rate of the characters, we have introduced a fuzzy unsupervised feature learning algorithm to learn features of individual characters. We then use Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) to classify the characters. The SVM provides 99.4% accuracy which outperforms all other approaches. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper an adaptive modified decision-directed algorithm (MDDA) for the electronic polarization control of the polarization-multiplexed coherent optical QPSK transmission is proposed. The algorithm utilizes a variable control gain instead of a fixed control gain. Simulations with a coherent QPSK transmission system show that this algorithm converges faster and experience minimum local oscillations at the steady state. BER performance of the algorithm is comparable to that of the modified decision-directed algorithm.

Old degraded historical documents carry various important information regarding our culture, economics etc. proper restoration of these documents is very necessary. After digitization of these documents there remain noises and other low resolution components. These affect the overall visual appearance of the documents. In this paper a novel approach is proposed to enhance ancient historical documents. To enhance these digital format documents a two way approach is considered. At first Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and bilateral filter is applied. At second level Non-Linear Enhancement with bilateral filter is applied. Both the approaches are then tested visually and quantitively to show the effectiveness of the approach.

We present a real-time approximate simulation of some camera errors and the effects these errors have on some common computer vision algorithms for robots. The simulation uses a software framework for real-time post processing of image data. We analyse the performance of some basic algorithms for robotic vision when adding modifications to images due to camera errors. The result of each algorithm / error combination is presented. This simulation is useful to tune robotic algorithms to make them more robust to imperfections of real cameras.

Separation of traversal path from the non-traversal path area is a fundamental problem in computer vision and an active area of research in the intelligence transportation systems community. In spite of many years of research, general purpose traversal path-detection mechanism is still a very challenging task because of the dynamic nature of the variables involved and the ever-changing geographic terrains. Among the various methodologies addressing the issues of traversal path detection, schemes that employ path detection are good but lack robustness whereas other procedures such as template matching are static in nature and one may even consider a system involving only optical flow which may be robust in comparisons to others but cannot be applied to various region of interest and is thus unable to solve the above mentioned problem as a single entity. In this paper, we present a methodology wherein we apply optical flow in synchronization with dynamic template matching to generate the traversal path area. The problem is partitioned into several categories; each category is processed according to a particular method and the output may serve as the input for the other classes. information is also provided on real-time performance of the algorithm and the results are illustrated to describe the efficiency and robustness of this approach. The algorithm having tested over various environmental conditions is found to be effective and robust.

Multimodal retinal images (RI) are extensively used for analysing various eye diseases and conditions such as myopia and diabetic retinopathy. The incorporation of either two or more RI modalities provides complementary structure information in the presence of non-uniform illumination and low-contrast homogeneous regions. It also presents significant challenges for retinal image registration (RIR). This paper investigates how the Expectation Maximization for Principal Component Analysis with Mutual information (EMPCA-MI) algorithm can effectively achieve multimodal RIR. This iterative hybrid-based similarity measure combines spatial features with mutual information to provide enhanced registration without recourse to either segmentation or feature extraction. Experimental results for clinical multimodal RI datasets comprising colour fundus and scanning laser ophthalmoscope images confirm EMPCA-MI is able to consistently afford superior numerical and qualitative registration performance compared with existing RIR techniques, such as the bifurcation structures method.

visual tracking under illumination changes is a challenging task for various computer vision systems. In this paper, we propose a robust and efficient tracking algorithm based on a novel feature descriptor called joint gradient-intensity histogram, which exploits both the pixel intensity and gradient orientation features. Unlike the traditional histogram based algorithms, the joint gradient-intensity histogram is extracted efficiently by employing the integral histogram, which is calculated recursively in the specially designed local image region, making the exhaustively searching process in real time. Experiments with the state-of-art tracking methods demonstrate superior performance of the proposed tracking algorithm under illumination changes.

Coded aperture snapshot spectral imaging systems (CASSI) measure the 3D spatio-spectral information of a scene using several compressive 2D focal plane array (FPA) snapshots. The image reconstruction algorithms utilized in CASSI use a first-order approximation of the underlying analog sensing phenomena. A calibration method is then used to compensate for the coarse approximation - an approach not well suited for multishot CASSI systems. This paper develops a more accurate computational model for CASSI which provides a higher quality of image reconstruction. Several simulations are shown to illustrate the performance improvement attained by the new model.

The application of freeform surfaces has increased since their complex shapes closely express a product's functional specifications and their machining is obtained with higher accuracy. In particular, optical surfaces exhibit enhanced performance especially when they take aspheric forms or more complex forms with multi-undulations. This study is mainly focused on the reconstruction of complex shapes such as freeform optical surfaces, and on the characterization of their form. The computer graphics community has proposed various algorithms for constructing a mesh based on the cloud of sample points. The mesh is a piecewise linear approximation of the surface and an interpolation of the point set. The mesh can further be processed for fitting parametric surfaces (Polyworks® or Geomagic®). The metrology community investigates direct fitting approaches. If the surface mathematical model is given, fitting is a straight forward task. Nonetheless, if the surface model is unknown, fitting is only possible through the association of polynomial Spline parametric surfaces. In this paper, a comparative study carried out on methods proposed by the computer graphics community will be presented to elucidate the advantages of these approaches. We stress the importance of the pre-processing phase as well as the significance of initial conditions. We further emphasize the importance of the meshing phase by stating that a proper mesh has two major advantages. First, it organizes the initially unstructured point set and it provides an insight of orientation, neighbourhood and curvature, and infers information on both its geometry and topology. Second, it conveys a better segmentation of the space, leading to a correct patching and association of parametric surfaces.

High-Level Synthesis has been researched and developed for these 20 years. Not only ASIC, but also reconfigurable devices, especially Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) development environment has been improved as well. Various types of large algorithms also have been implemented on FPGAs in order to shorten their processing time, especially in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD). However, for such an acceleration, FPGA has some limitations when programmers try to implement large algorithm. Area is one of the largest constraints for FPGA, so programmers have to divide one large algorithm into some small parts. The number of arithmetic units also constraints the size of algorithm and degree of the speed-up. Here, wetry to divide a large algorithm into some small functions, and implement on some FPGAs by using a High-Level Synthesis(HLS) tool. Since the trial and error is easy to be done withHLS tool, we propose a technique for exploration of division point of a large algorithm by using a HLS tool CWB (Cyber Work Bench).
