The clinical relevance of pulse wave velocity (PWV), as an indicator of cardiac risk associated to arterial stiffness, has gained clinical relevance over the last years. Optic sensors are an attractive instrumental solution for this type of measurement due to their truly non-contact operation capability, which has the potential of an interference free measurement. The nature of the optically originated signals, however, poses new challenges to the designer, either at the probe design level as at the signal processing required to extract the timing information that yields PWV. In this work we describe the construction of two prototype optical probes and discuss their evaluation using three algorithms for pulse transit time (PTT) evaluation. Results, obtained in a dedicated test bench, that is also described, demonstrate the possibility of measuring pulse transit times as short as 1ms with less than 1% error. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a clinically interesting parameter associated to cardiac risk due to arterial stiffness, generally evaluated by the time that the pressure wave spends to travel between two arbitrary points. Optic sensors are an attractive instrumental solution in this kind of time assessment applications due to their truly non-contact operation capability, which ensures an interference free measurement. On the other hand, they can pose different challenges to the designer, mostly related to the features of the signals they produce and to the associated signal processing burden required to extract error free, reliable information. In this work we evaluate two prototype optical probes dedicated to pulse transit time (PTT) evaluation as well as three algorithms for its assessment. Although the tests were carried out at the test bench, where "well behaved" signals can be obtained, the transition to a probe for use in humans is also considered. Results demonstrated the possibility of measuring pulse transit times as short as 1 ms with less than 1% error.

Dual-Polarization 16-QAM coherent systems are a spectrally efficient alternative to future optical networks with metropolitan dimensions. However, the close-packed constellation of the 16-QAM modulation format also has drawbacks, such as an increased susceptibility to phase noise generated in the transmitter and local oscillator lasers. This paper evaluates basic phase recovery algorithms developed for DP-16-QAM systems, using computer simulations and the offline post-processing of experimental data. Special attention is given to joint-polarization algorithms, which use the phase information of both polarization orientations to jointly produce a single estimate of the phase noise, thus relaxing the requirements for transmitter and local oscillator lasers.

Crowdsourcing systems, in which tasks are electronically distributed to numerous "information piece-workers", have emerged as an effective paradigm for human-powered solving of large scale problems in domains such as image classification, data entry, optical character recognition, recommendation, and proofreading. Because these low-paid workers can be unreliable, nearly all crowdsourcers must devise schemes to increase confidence in their answers, typically by assigning each task multiple times and combining the answers in some way such as majority voting. In this paper, we consider a general model of such crowdsourcing tasks, and pose the problem of minimizing the total price (i.e., number of task assignments) that must be paid to achieve a target overall reliability. We give a new algorithm for deciding which tasks to assign to which workers and for inferring correct answers from the workers' answers. We show that our algorithm significantly outperforms majority voting and, in fact, is asymptotically optimal through comparison to an oracle that knows the reliability of every worker.

We investigated the power consumption of the Bandwidth-Variable optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (BV-OOFDM) transport networks. OFDM has been recently proposed as a modulation technique for optical networks due to its good spectral efficiency enabling elastic bandwidth transmissions compared with Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). So far, the vast majority of research papers on Routing and Spectrum Allocation (RSA) problem in optical OFDM focus on increasing spectrum efficiency, however power consumption rather than spectral efficiency may eventually become a barrier to the continued growth of the Internet. In this paper, we introduce RSA problem from the viewpoint of network power consumption, which we formulate as Low Power Consumption RSA (LPC-RSA) problem. Different algorithms to solve the LPC-RSA problem are present. We start by presenting an optimal integer linear programming (ILP) RSA algorithm using decomposition method which breaks RSA into its two substituent subproblems, namely, (i) routing and (ii) spectrum allocation and solves them sequentially. For large networks, a heuristic algorithm is also proposed. Our results indicate that RSA with optimal objective of power consumption can have better power consumption and the same spectral efficiency solution compared with RSA with optimal objective of spectral efficiency, and the proposed heuristic algorithm yields close to the optimal solution in low running time.

A microfluidic analyzer system and a cell detection algorithm were developed to analyze biomedical fluids. The obtained microfluidic device is based on the integration of different fluidic systems: the SensoNor glass/silicon/glass multilayer microchip and ThinXXS plastic slide. A hydrodynamic focuser was designed to sort and analyze cells/particles in a 100μm wide channel. The advantages of this Lab-On-a-Chip (LOC) structure are the easy interfaceability with electrodes and optical systems, biocompatibility and ability of optical analysis and morphologic recognition. The proposed CNN-based (Cellular Neural Network) algorithm is real-time and scalable. This constructed microfluidic and optical system is able to analyze and measure any biological liquid, which contain less than 10μm size particles or cells, and count the number of morphologically well-separated different elements in the focused liquid flow using real-time image processing algorithms.

This paper addresses the designing a pragmatic appliance of multi-antenna, 2.437GHz ISM band multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) testbed systems developed for evaluating wireless MIMO algorithms. Since using Sundance demo package for the development of a flexible field-programmable gate array (FPGA) processing system. The objective of this contribution is to provide an understanding of basic MIMO-LTE techniques and the practical concept, the setup, and the handling of our MIMO testbed based on SMT hardware and 3L diamond software platform in facts. The testbed manipulated as well as a MATLAB interface allowing real channel measurements become used in evolution and algorithm development. We have proposed a 2×2 antenna MIMO transceiver testbed system with Alamouti STBC and 64-QAM research model which efficiently implemented the MIMO algorithms.

Traffic flow detection plays an important role in Intelligent Transportation systems(ITS).video based traffic flow detection system is the most widely used strategy in *** this circumstance,we design and implement a video based traffic flow detection system which is called MyTD in this *** takes advantages of both shadow removal and optical flow ***,we introduce the current development of ITS and focus on the video based traffic detection technology,which is the key to ***,a shadow removal algorithm combining information in both RGB and HSV color spaces is ***,based on the Iterative Pyramidal LK optical Flow Algorithm,a vehicle tracking function is realized by OpenCV,as well as a Connected Components Labeling function and the vehicle counting ***,MyTD is implemented and tested based on the algorithm presented *** results show the outstanding performance of our method comparing with traditional optical flow algorithms.
