Deblurring camera-based document image is an important task in digital document processing, since it can improve both the accuracy of optical character recognition systems and the visual quality of document images. Traditional deblurring algorithms have been proposed to work for natural-scene images. However the natural-scene images are not consistent with document images. In this paper, the distinct characteristics of document images are investigated. We propose a content-aware prior for document image deblurring. It is based on document image foreground segmentation. Besides, an upper-bound constraint combined with total variation based method is proposed to suppress the rings in the deblurred image. Comparing with the traditional general purpose deblurring methods, the proposed deblurring algorithm can produce more pleasing results on document images. Encouraging experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method.

Recently, high-resolution gamma cameras have been developed with detectors containing >; 10 5 -10 6 elements. SPECT imagers based on these detectors usually also have a large number of voxel bins and therefore face memory storage issues for the system matrix when performing fast tomographic reconstructions using iterative algorithms. To address these issues, we have developed a method that parameterizes the detector response to a point source and generates the system matrix on the fly during MLEM or OSEM on graphics hardware. The calibration method, interpolation of coefficient data, and reconstruction results are presented in the context of a recently commissioned small-animal SPECT imager, called FastSPECT III.

Automated learning systems used to extract useful information from musical scripts, play a major role in optical music recognition. optical music recognition or OMR has been widely used to extract the musical notations and knowledge from old scripts and thus enclose lot of importance in retrieving historical data. The field of pattern recognition and knowledge representation has to be symmetrically used for music notation recognition making it a challenging problem. Most of the methods used for OMR recognition and extraction like HMM’s, Neural etc mentioned in literature have errors which require human operators to be rectified. The paper proposes a novel automatic music recognition system which can be effectively used to recognize sheet or printed scores into a playable platform under the different conditions of blur, illumination variations, noise etc. The paper uses an enhancement supported threshold GA based pre-processing methodology for bimodal images further compares with the Sobel filtered and standard GA outputs for the same. The methodology makes use of an enhanced image obtained by histogram equalization followed by image segmentation using a specific threshold. The threshold can be obtained using genetic algorithms. GA based segmentation technique is codified as an optimization problem used efficiently to search maxima and minima from the histogram of the image to obtain the threshold for segmentation. The system described is capable of extracting normal images as well as images with noise, images from old scripts.

Scalable quantum information processing and the optical topological quantum computer

optical quantum computation has represented one of the most successful testbed systems for quantum information processing. Along with ion-traps and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), experimentalists have demonstrated control of qubits, multi-gubit gates and small quantum algorithms. However, photonic based qubits suffer from a problematic lack of a large scale architecture for fault-tolerant computation which could conceivably be built in the near future. While optical systems are, in some regards, ideal for quantum computing due to their high mobility and low susceptibility to environmental decoherence, these same properties make the construction of compact, chip based architectures difficult. Here we discuss many of the important issues related to scalable fault-tolerant quantum computation and introduce a feasible architecture design for an optics based computer. We combine the recent development of topological cluster state computation with the photonic module, simple chip based devices which can be utilized to deterministically entangle photons. The integration of this operational unit with one of the most exciting computational models solves many of the existing problems with other optics based architectures and leads to a feasible large scale design which can continuously generate a 3D cluster state with a photonic module resource cost linear in the cross sectional size of the cluster.

In article a digital system for high resolution infrared camera control and image processing is described. The camera is built with use of bolometric focal plane array of size 640 by 480 detectors. Single detector in array has size of 25 mu m and can detect incident radiation from the spectral range of 8/12 mu m thanks to the special filter installed in specially designed entrance window. The most important tasks of infrared image processing system are array readout and correction of detectors offset and responsivity variations. The next tasks of the system are conversion of analog voltage signals from microbolometers in array to digital form and then composition of a thermal image. Microbolometer array needs to be controlled via several signals. The signal generator for readout circuit is capable of changing various timing parameters like frame rate or integration time of the detector array. The changes in these parameters can be done via special set of memory mapped registers. The infrared data received from detector array is transferred via data bus to modules performing image processing, for example techniques for image enhancement. Image processing algorithms necessary for infrared image generation are nonuniformity correction, bad pixel replacement and radiometric calibration. Optionally an additional image processing techniques can be performed like edge enhancement, dynamic range compression or object identification. The elaborated architecture of the system allowed easy change of parameters of the system and to adopt many new algorithms without significant hardware changes. Scientific work funded from science fund for years 2009-2011 as a development project.

Quantum algorithms and computational models primarily focus on processing quantum states via qubit manipulations and measurements. While this allows for hardware independent algorithm development, it does not necessarily reflect the full capabilities of even imperfect physical implementations - which typically have access to additional degrees of freedom not routinely considered in quantum algorithm development. In analogy with electrical mixed-signal (analog and digital) processing, here we investigate the prospects of incorporating the strengths of the native physical platform into the quantum information processor. Although the treatment here will be limited to optical systems the general approach should apply to other physical systems as well.

This paper presents the design, implementation and demonstration results from the ongoing ESA ARTES project "SFEDONA". The SFEDONA project deals with a complete endto-end fire detection and alerting application which employs state-of-the-art satellite and wireless communications air interfaces as well as advanced technologies in fire detection, alerting and propagation estimation based on terrestrial optical cameras, weather meteorological stations and environmental sensors. In particular, this paper presents in detail the SFEDONA system architecture, discusses critical design and implementation issues and provides information on the trials and demonstrations results from the related in-lab validation activities. Well field-proven multi-sensor data fusion algorithms, which are widely used in the fire protection domain, are also analyzed. Moreover, emphasis is put on the critical comparison of state-of-the-art satellite IP technologies as well as to the detailed design of the satellite IP network solution actually implemented in the project.

Most existing track-to-track fusion (T2TF) algorithms for distributed tracking systems are given assuming that the local trackers are synchronized. However, in the real world, synchronization can hardly be achieved and local trackers usually work in an asynchronous fashion, where local measurements are obtained and local tracks are updated at different times with different rates. Communication delays between local trackers and the fusion center (FC) also cause delays in the arrival of the local tracks at the FC. This paper presents the optimal asynchronous T2TF algorithm for distributed tracking systems under the linear Gaussian (LG) assumption, which is also the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) fuser without the Gaussian assumption. The information configuration of asynchronous T2TF with partial information feedback (AT2TFpf) is used. This is the most practical configuration for AT2TF with time delays, since communication delays make full information feedback very complicated. To illustrate the algorithm, a basic scenario of the fusion of two asynchronous local tracks is used, where one is available at the FC with no delay and the other is transmitted from a local tracker with a time delay. The algorithm can be extended to scenarios with more than two local trackers. The optimal asynchronous T2TF algorithm is compared with the approximate algorithms proposed by Novoselsky (denoted as AT2TFpfApprA-C) and is shown to have performance benefit in consistency as well as in fusion accuracy. The drawback of the optimal fusion algorithm is that it has high communication and computational cost. Two new approximate algorithms, AT2TFpfApprD and AT2TFpfApprE, are also proposed which significantly reduce the cost of the optimal algorithm with little loss in fusion performance.
