The purpose of this field trial was to investigate whether changes in the state of polarisation (SOP) of light in installed cabling affected Polarisation Mode Dispersion (PMD) test methods. The field trial compared the test results obtained by measuring the PMD five times on each of two fibres on four different routes using six different PMD test systems, whilst simultaneously monitoring the SOP of light travelling along the other fibre in the same cable with millisecond sampling resolution. This gave an enormous amount of data (1GByte!) on the dynamics of polarisation effects in a variety of installed cabling environments that is now of interest to those developing 100Gb/s transmission systems that may use polarisation multiplexed QPSK with coherent detection. Such systems are dependent upon digital signal processing to recover the transmitted information satisfactorily;the polarisation dynamics presented here indicate how fast the processing algorithms need to be able to track changes in the received signal, and the magnitude of the changes that need to be tracked. We found that in some installation environments there were continuous changes in the state of polarisation with mean magnitude in the order of 200 degrees per second of rotation on the Poincaré sphere. These changes were due to a variety of environmental factors, and even in 'stable' installations there were fast transients with more than 1000 degrees per second of rotation on the Poincaré sphere. During one event a peak of around 6500 degrees per second of rotation on the Poincaré sphere was observed.

The rapidly growing field of remote sensing is beginning to supply massive quantities of high-resolution imagery of the Earth and other planets. In the earth sciences, parallel supercomputers have always played a prominent role in the visualization of this imagery, and in other image processing applications designed to enhance and display the obtained information. Imageodesy is a technique for detection and measurement of feature shifts between two images based on local feature fitting algorithms such as Normalize Cross-Correlation (Crippen, 1992) and phase correlation. This technique allows the vast archives of optical imagery, collected by satellite systems such as SPOT and Landsat, to be used not only to detect but also to measure the subtle terrain displacements associated with earthquakes, glacial motion and volcanic processes, all to within sub-resolution accuracy and precision is also a major factor.

The aim of this paper is to introduce a novel statistical model-based image fusion method for Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical images. The current fusion algorithms are effective only in specific areas of the scene. Hence, the fused image may not contain enough information for subsequent processing like classification and feature extraction. Our proposed method aims to keep the maximum contextual and spatial information from the source data by exploiting the relationship between spatial domain cumulants and wavelet domain cumulants. Our contributions are in integrating the relationship between spatial and wavelet domain cumulants of source images into an image fusion process as well as in employing these wavelet cumulants for optimization of weights in a Cauchy convolution based image fusion scheme. The superior performance of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated in comparison to existing fusion algorithms using real SAR and optical images.

optical systems are well suited for traffic observation and management. The real-time requirements can be met by implementation of appropriate image processing algorithms in hardware. Being one of the most important applications of optical sensors, vision-based vehicle detection and shape recognition for collecting information about road congestion, for driver assistance and for providing information for future development of roads has received considerable attention over the last one-two decades. There are many reasons for the intense research in this field including security requirements in the countries, the increased number of road accidents, the increased number of vehicles on the roads and the availability of feasible computer technologies that has brought a tremendous progress for computer vision research. This paper provides a critical survey of recent vision based road vehicle detection and shape recognition systems appeared in the literature.

PolMux QPSK has emerged as the solution of choice for the first commercial implementations of 100 Gb/s transmission systems. Thanks to coherent detection and digital signal processing (DSP), linear distortions such as chromatic dispersion (CD) and polarisation mode dispersion (PMD) can in principle be completely compensated for. And indeed, effective algorithms have been devised and extensively investigate that allow CD- and PMD-resilient transmission of 100 Gb/s over long distances, leaving optical noise accumulation and non-linear impairments as the factors ultimately limiting reach. In this paper, we present the evaluation of a simple algorithm to compensate for intra-channel Kerr non-linearity (both intra- and cross-polarisation) arising in the transmission of PolMux QPSK signals at 100 Gb/s.

In system identification both the input and the output of a system are available to an observer and an algorithm is sought to identify parameters of a hypothesized model of that system. Here we present a novel formal methodology for identifying dendritic processing in a neural circuit consisting of a linear dendritic processing filter in cascade with a spiking neuron model. The input to the circuit is an analog signal that belongs to the space of bandlimited functions. The output is a time sequence associated with the spike train. We derive an algorithm for identification of the dendritic processing filter and reconstruct its kernel with arbitrary precision.

This paper describes the development of the plenoptic wavefront sensor for an adaptive optics systems proposed for the future EST Solar telescope. The plenoptic sensor offers additional optical information compared to traditional sensors at the expense of a significant increase in the image processing. This paper will concentrate on the processing required to develop a viable plenoptic sensor, describing the algorithm and the real time implementation in FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays). The aim of this work is to demonstrate that by using the advantages of the FPGAs in terms of parallel processing, speed and cost figures the plenoptic sensor real-time processing is perfectly viable. Consequently, the proposed system appears as a competitive alternative for the traditional wavefront sensors systems.

Advances in nanoscale fabrication techniques in dielectric and metallic material systems has opened up new opportunities in photonics and plasmonics for solving long standing problems in information systems and telecommunication systems. Optics in general has the potential to solve some of the most demanding problems in information systems. It promises crosstalk-free interconnects with essentially unlimited bandwidth, long-distance data transmission without skew and without powerand timeconsuming regeneration, miniaturization, parallelism, and efficient implementation of important algorithms such as Fourier transforms. Numerous information processing systems and concepts in space and time have been studied during the past decades. Yet, optical computing and processing in space and time has so far failed to move out of the lab. The current optical technology is costly, bulky, fragile in their alignment, and difficult to integrate with electronic systems, both in terms of the fabrication process and in terms of delivery and retrieval of massive volumes of data the optical elements can process. Our most recent work emphasizes the construction of optical subsystems directly on-chip, with the same lithographic tools as the surrounding electronics. This has been made possible by the advances in these tools, which can now create features significantly smaller than the optical wavelength; experts predict lithographic resolution as fine as 16nm by year 2020. Arranged in a regular pattern, subwavelength features act as a metamaterial whose optical properties are controlled by the density and geometry of the pattern and its constituents.

This paper proposes complexity reduction and performance enhancement schemes for the iterative row-column soft decision feedback algorithm of Cheng et. al., one of the leading algorithms for turbo equalization of two dimensional intersymbol interference (ISI) channels with additive white Gaussian noise. For complexity reduction, we propose sorting and truncation of the soft decision feedback probability configurations. On the 3×3 ISI channel, this technique reduces complexity by more than 95% with only marginal performance loss. For performance enhancement, we propose post processing the final log-likelihood ratio estimates by thresholding and clustering, followed by a localized squared Euclidean distance (SED) search against the received 2D signal. The SED search yields up to 0.4 dB performance gain, with modest additional complexity.
