As robot assisted living is gaining more attentions for elderly care recently, automated human daily activity recognition becomes more important in human-robot interaction. In this paper, we proposed an approach to indoor human daily activity recognition which combines motion data and location information. One inertial sensor is worn on the right thigh of a human subject to collect motion data, while an optical motion capture system is used to record the human location information. Such a combination has the advantage of significantly reducing the obtrusiveness to the human subject at a moderate cost of vision processing, while maintaining a high accuracy of recognition. First, a two-step algorithm is proposed to recognize the activity based on motion data using the neural networks and a hidden Markov model. Second, to fuse the motion data with the location information, Bayes' theorem is used to update the activities recognized from the motion data. We conducted experiments in a mock apartment and the obtained results proved the effectiveness and accuracy of our algorithms.

During the past few years, advancements in high end computers and sensor techniques made it possible to develop a real-time odontological biometric identification and verification system apart from the existing offline forensic odontological systems. However, this requires highly automated teeth image segmentation and feature extraction algorithms. In this paper, we propose a novel non-forensic biometric technique, employing 3D optical sensors for data acquisition and representing it as 3D surface meshes (stereo lithography format). Initially, feature regions are estimated using geometric curvature information and principal component analysis. Subsequently, active contours optimize these feature regions to segment exactly each tooth surface. Finally, a feature vector is computed for the set of teeth which is derived from the relative position and tilt orientation of each tooth relative to a well defined reference system.

OPS (optical packet switching) networks are considered as one of promising candidates for new generation network architecture. However, optical RAM has not been realized yet. Hence, high packet loss probability is a serious issue on feasible OPS networks. Now, there are some ways to solve this issue. The first approach is the usage of congestion avoidance devices like wavelength converter, fiber delay line , and so on, whereas the second one is the adaptive learning based method like priority-based wavelength assignment (PWA), and suitability index method, and so on. These ways, however, focus on OBS (optical burst switching) network where burst-by-burst success or failure results on signaling messages can be used for updating priority values, so do not match in OPS network. Furthermore, these path-based learning approaches do not consider global load balancing over whole network. Thus, there remains further possibilities for improving efficiency of networks. This paper proposes a new method of route and wavelength assignment suitable for the online operation. By using typical meta heuristics algorithm, genetic algorithm, proposed method can realize global load balancing at practical processing time. We verify the effectiveness of the proposed method through simulation results.

This paper presents the design, implementation and demonstration results from the ongoing ESA ARTES project “SFEDONA”. The SFEDONA project deals with a complete end-to-end fire detection and alerting application which employs state-of-the-art satellite and wireless communications air interfaces as well as advanced technologies in fire detection, alerting and propagation estimation based on terrestrial optical cameras, weather meteorological stations and environmental sensors. In particular, this paper presents in detail the SFEDONA system architecture, discusses critical design and implementation issues and provides information on the trials and demonstrations results from the related in-lab validation activities. Well field-proven multi-sensor data fusion algorithms, which are widely used in the fire protection domain, are also analyzed. Moreover, emphasis is put on the critical comparison of state-of-the-art satellite IP technologies as well as to the detailed design of the satellite IP network solution actually implemented in the project.

Based on Blackfin DSP, we design and implement a compact moving object detecting and video recording system. The background subtraction algorithm is applied to the system to detect the moving objects. And when there is any object being detected, the frames containing the moving objects will be recorded automatically. In order to improve the accuracy of the detecting results, in this paper, instead of using the median filter, we design the block filtering algorithm to filter the noise with the simply connected block region, since the block filtering algorithm needs far less amount of computation than the median filtering algorithm. Further, in order to improve the detecting speed, based on the memory configuration of the system, a new block based parallel data processing mechanism is proposed, in which the external memory data to be processed is moved into the internal memory space in advance that greatly reduces the external memory access requests of the DSP core, thus good parallel data processing and transmission is achieved. The results of the experiments demonstrate that the block filtering algorithm is more suitable for a real time system than the median filter, because the block filtering algorithm improves the filtering efficiency greatly by reducing the amount of filtering computation and also works with satisfying statistical accuracy. In addition, the results of the experiments also show that the block based parallel data processing mechanism is highly effective in improving detecting speed and contributes to a more efficient parallel detecting system.

This paper presents the development of an instrumentation system for visualizing and characterizing free radicals in combustion flames. The system combines optical splitting and filtering, intensified imaging and image processing techniques, providing a solution for the monitoring of flame radicals (OH*, CN*, CH*, and C_2*) simultaneously and continuously. Computing algorithms are developed to analyze the images and quantify the radiative characteristics of the radicals. Experimental results are obtained from a gas-fired combustion rig to demonstrate the effectiveness of the system. The information obtained by the system can be used to establish the relationships between radical characteristics and the chemical and physical properties of the fuels and combustion products, helping to obtain an in-depth understanding of pollutant formation processes, and leading to an optimized combustion process.

Wavelength Routed Photonic Networks (WRPNs) with a fully distributed control plane promise to satisfy the increasing infrastructure needs of upper layer clients regarding automatic, on-demand guaranteed services. In this highly dynamic scenario, lightpath provisioning based on classic Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA) approaches is inappropriate, mainly due to poor network resource utilization and the lack of Quality of Transmission (QoT) guarantees. In order to fulfill the challenging requirements for WRPNs, online RWAs that consider impairments of the physical layer are needed. These are usually complex algorithms that require intense processing. This paper introduces a new algorithm that assures absolute bandwidth and Bit Error Rate (BER) for lightpaths, and combines the RWA and the impairment validation processes to improve resource utilization. Simple yet efficient novel heuristics based on residual link capacities for a high parallelizable RWA engine are also presented.

This paper mainly investigates the problem of radio resource allocation for heterogeneous services transmission in OFDMA-based wireless networks, where the Soft QoS traffics are considered. In communication systems from the users' point of view, utility is a good metric to describe the satisfaction of services, the objective of this paper is to improve the total utility of all the system users, and guarantee their Quality of Service(QoS). Three types of services are considered, including the Hard QoS (HQ), the Best Effort (BE) and the Soft QoS (SQ) traffics. First we analyze the utility and hard outage characteristics of the wireless services, and then we introduce a new concept, i.e., \emph{soft outage} to further improve the SQ users' performance. Afterwards, two wireless resource allocation schemes, i.e., the Hard Outage Allocation (HOA) and Soft Outage Allocation (SOA) schemes are proposed corresponding to the hard outage and the soft outage, respectively. Simulation results show that the proposed resource allocation algorithms can greatly improve the system performance.

In our project a standard microfluidic analyzer background system and its construction steps were developed to analyze biologic fluids. The obtained micro-Total-Analysis-System (μTAS) is based on the integration of different microflu-idic systems. Each part follows well-defined rules to make the integration of the large-scale production microchip technology with the cheap polymer support system possible. The compiled system is based on the SensoNor glass/silicon/glass multilayer technology [1] and ThinXXS plastic slide technology, which are made from low cost materials, easily producible in large-scale and in the same time biocompatible. In this project hydrodynamic focusers were designed to sort and analyze particles and cells in one continuous focused line, in a 50 μm wide channel. The advantage of this Lab-On-a-Chip (LOC) structure is the easy interfaceability with electrodes and optical systems. The designed microchannels contain electrodes for electrical characterization and because of the anodic bonding process it is possible to observe the channel with an upright microscope [2]. With these two fundamental methods our system is able to analyze and measure any biological liquid, which contain less than 10 μm size particles or cells, and count the number of morphologically well-separated different elements in the focused liquid flow with image processing algorithms.

The paper considers the problem of a single batch scheduling problem whose processing times are fuzzy numbers. The objective is to minimize the sum of completion times. A batch processing machines can handle up to B jobs simultaneously. The processing time of a batch is equal to the longest processing time among the jobs in the batch. A rule that the optical batch schedule satisfies is given and two algorithms are presented. © 2009 IEEE.
