As a kind of powerful anti-counterfeiting device, diffractive optically variable image (DOvi) has been developed and widely used in information security field. However, the identification of DOvi today by bare eyes is not reliable. In this paper we investigate the recognition of DOvi with machine learning method, and five kinds of algorithms, namely quadratic discriminate analysis (QDA), linear discriminate analysis (LDA), regularized discriminate analysis (RDA), leave-one-out covariance matrix estimate (LOOC), and Kullback-Leibler information measure based method (KLIM) are applied to the recognition of DOvi. Considering both time cost and correct classification rate, KLIM classifier exceeds others.

This paper presents a new hybrid image fusion scheme that combines features of pixel and region based fusion, to be integrated in a surveillance system. In such systems, objects can be extracted from the different set of images due to background availability, and transferred to the new composite image with no additional processing usually imposed by other fusion approaches. The background information is then fused in a multi-resolution pixel-based fashion using gradient-based rules to yield a more reliable feature selection. According to Piella and Petrovic quantitative evaluation metrics, the proposed scheme exhibits a superior performance compared to existing fusion algorithms.

In this paper, a novel spatial and scale weighted GIST (SSWGIST) descriptor is proposed for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image retrieval. Motivated by GIST features, images are represented by the mean values of adjacent and non-overlapped blocks of the Gabor filters response. Beyond that, our methods give those values different weights on different spatial and scale sites. The spatial weights are obtained adaptively by counting the ratio and significance of edges detected in the blocks. The scale weights obey the Gaussian distribution with special parameters toward given image datasets. Thus, the prominent identity of each block of filtering response can be reflected adaptively. A retrieval scheme experiment is carried on the Brodatz and SAR image datasets. The results reveal our algorithmpsilas efficient performances and superiorities.

Neptec has developed a vision system for autonomous on-orbit rendezvous and docking that does not require the use of cooperative markers on the target spacecraft. The system uses an active TriDAR 3D sensor and efficient model based tracking algorithms to provide 6 degree of freedom (6DOF) relative pose information in realtime. The TriDAR (triangulation + LIDAR) sensing technology combines triangulation and time-of-flight (ToF) active ranging techniques within the same optical path. This configuration takes advantage of the complementary nature of these two imaging technologies and allows the system to provide fast and accurate 3 dimensional data at both short and long range. In partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Neptec has developed a novel object localization algorithm that calculates the relative pose of a target spacecraft without requiring an initial estimate of the pose. This algorithm will be used to automatically initiate the model based tracking process and recover if tracking is lost. The technique was specifically designed for real-time operations in space where a target spacecraft could be tumbling and processing power is limited. Most traditional approaches to object recognition and pose estimation algorithms require high resolution data arranged in a grid such that convolution based operators can be used. This generally means that data acquisition is slow and real-time data processing requires a powerful computer. Neptec's approach follows the more information less data (MILD) paradigm. It requires only a unorganized sparse 3D point cloud of the target, keeping the data acquisition time to a minimum. This paper presents an overview of the overall tracking system as well as results from testing the localization algorithm. The algorithm was tested with both simulated and TriDAR sensor data.

In the previous paper, a readout approach for the Hamiltonian path problem (HPP) in DNA computing based on the real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was proposed. Based on this approach, real-time amplification was performed with the TaqMan probes and the TaqMan detection mechanism was exploited for the design and development of the readout approach. The readout approach consists of two steps: real-time amplification in vitro using TaqMan-based real-time PCR, followed by information processing in silico to assess the results of real-time amplification, which in turn, enables extraction of the Hamiltonian path. However, the previous method used manual classification of two different output reactions of real-time PCR. In this paper, alternative fuzzy c-means (AFCM) clustering algorithm is used to identify automatically two different reactions in realtime PCR. We show that AFCM clustering technique can be implemented for clustering output results of DNA computing readout method based on DNA Engine Opticon 2 system.

This paper considers the problem of taking marker locations from optical motion capture data to identify and parameterise the underlying human skeleton structure and motion over time. It is concerned with real-time algorithms suitable for use within a visual feedback system. A common problem in motion capture is marker occlusion. Most current methods are only useful for offline processing or become ineffective when a significant portion of markers are missing for a long period of time. This paper presents a prediction algorithm, using a Kalman filter approach in combination with inferred information from neighbouring markers, to provide a continuous flow of data. The results are accurate and reliable even in cases where all markers on a limb are occluded, or one or two markers are not visible for a large sequence of frames. Pre-defined models are not required and skeleton fitting to this complete data can then be updated in real-time.

From a patient safety perspective, time-consuming searches for life saving equipments or drugs have been the subject of a hazard report or recall. In addition to yielding significant time saving asset tracking systems (ATS) ensure all assets tracking. In this work, an ultra wide band (UWB) tracking system is developed, that automatically captures the movement of in-house patients and clinical staff. The whole system comprises of position assessment block (PAB), position management block (PMB) and application processing unit (APU), connected through UWB and wireless LAN network. System is tested in a typical hospital ward environment for diversified UWB receiver tracking methodologies, such as point mode tracking (PMT), linear scan mode tracking (LSMT), bat mode tracking (BMT) and panoramic tracking (PMT). Characterization of suitable tracking schemes is also discussed. Robustness of system is verified for across various position detection algorithms e.g., angle of arrival (AOA), received signal strength (RSS) and time of arrival (TOA). In addition to helping staff locate equipment, our ATS is able to facilitate use and distribution of inventory by collecting and facilitating the of data on equipment location over time and hence prone to be tampered.

In a surveillance system, a camera operator follows an object of interest by moving the camera, then gains additional information about the object by zooming. As the active vision field advances, the ability to automate such a system is nearing fruition. One hurdle limiting the use of object recognition algorithms in real-time systems is the quality of captured imagery;recognition algorithms often have strict scale and position requirements where if those parameters are not met, the performance rapidly degrades to failure. The goal of this work is to create a system that provides scale-invariant tracking using inexpensive off-the-shelf components.

A simple model is presented of a possible inspection regimen applied to each leg of a cargo containers' journey between its point of origin and destination. Several candidate modalities are proposed to be used at multiple remote locations to act as a pre-screen inspection as the target approaches a perimeter and as the primary inspection modality at the portal. information from multiple data sets are fused to optimize the costs and performance of a network of such inspection systems. A series of image processing algorithms are presented that automatically process X-ray images of containerized cargo. The goal of this processing is to locate the container in a real time stream of traffic traversing a portal without impeding the flow of commerce. Such processing may facilitate the inclusion of unmanned/unattended inspection systems in such a network. Several samples of the processing applied to data collected from deployed systems are included. Simulated data from a notional cargo inspection system with multiple sensor modalities and advanced data fusion algorithms are also included to show the potential increased detection and throughput performance of such a configuration.
