The PEP-II RF systems incorporate numerous feedback loops in the low-level processing for impedance control and operating point regulation. The interaction of the multiple loops with the beam is complicated, and the systems incorporate online diagnostic tools to configure the feedback loops as well as to record fault files in the case of an RF abort. Rapid and consistent analysis of the RF-related beam aborts and other failures is critical to the reliable operation of the B-Factory, especially at the recently achieved high beam currents. Procedures and algorithms used to extract diagnostic information from time domain fault files are presented and illustrated via example interpretations of PEP-II fault file data. Example faults presented will highlight the subtle interpretation required to determine the root cause. Some such examples are: abort kicker firing asynchronously, klystron and cavity arcs, beam loss leading to longitudinal instability, tuner read back jumps and poorly configured low-level RF feedback loop.

An interesting problem in analysis of video data concerns design of algorithms that detect perceptually significant features in an unsupervised manner, for instance methods of machine learning for automatic classification of human expression. A geometric formulation of this genre of problems could be modeled with help of perceptual psychology. In this article, we outline one approach for a special case where video segments are to be classified according to expression of emotion or other similar facial motions. The encoding of realistic facial motions that convey expression of emotions for a particular person P forms a parameter space X-P whose study reveals the "objective geometry" for the problem of unsupervised feature detection from video. The geometric features and discrete representation of the space X-P are independent of subjective evaluations by observers. While the "subjective geometry" of X-P varies from observer to observer, levels of sensitivity and variation in perception of facial expressions appear to share a certain level of universality among members of similar cultures. Therefore, statistical geometry of invariants of X-P for a sample of population could provide effective algorithms for extraction of such features. In cases where frequency of events is sufficiently large in the sample data, a suitable framework could be provided to facilitate the information-theoretic organization and study of statistical invariants of such features. This article provides a general approach to encode motion in terms of a particular genre of dynamical systems and the geometry of their flow. An example is provided to illustrate the general theory.

Nano-coatings with adjustable optical features is one of the revolutionary technologies of today. In this work, we investigate how hyperspectral imaging can detect adjustable nano-surfaces used, for example, for active camouflage. The distinct attributes of the nano-coating spectra are discussed. Fast algorithms of utilizing hyperspectral information for recognizing these attributes are suggested. The research applies to both recognizing the camouflaged objects and to building unrecognizable camouflage technology. In the context of tracking active camouflage, the identification of characteristic spectral attributes is especially important. Active spectra can constantly change, therefore confusing traditional hyperspectral classification. In contrast, the identified general spectral attributes stay the same allowing for robust identification and reliable tracking of the camouflaged objects.

Many modern imaging and surveillance systems contain more than one sensor. For example, most modern airborne imaging pods contain at least visible and infrared sensors. Often these systems have a single display that is only capable of showing data from either camera, and thereby fail to exploit the benefit of having simultaneous multi-spectral data available to the user. It can be advantageous to capture all spectral features within each image and to display a fused result rather than single band imagery. This paper discusses the key processes necessary for an image fusion system and then describes how they were implemented in a real-time, rugged hardware system. The problems of temporal and spatial misalignment of the sensors and the process of electronic image warping must be solved before the image data is fused. The techniques used to align the two inputs to the fusion system are described and a summary is given of our research into automatic alignment techniques. The benefits of different image fusion schemes are discussed and those that were implemented are described. The paper concludes with a summary of the real-time implementation of image alignment and image fusion by Octec and Waterfall Solutions and the problems that have been encountered and overcome.

The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is procuring Airborne Real-time Cueing Hyperspectral Enhanced Reconnaissance (ARCHER) systems to increase their search-and-rescue mission capability. These systems are being installed on a fleet of Gippsland GA-8 aircraft, and will position CAP to gain real-world mission experience with the application of hyperspectral sensor and processing technology to search and rescue. The ARCHER system design, data processing, and operational concept leverage several years of investment in hyperspectral technology research and airborne system demonstration programs by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). Each ARCHER system consists of a NovaSol-designed, pushbroom, visible/near-infrared (VNIR) hyperspectral imaging (HSI) sensor, a co-boresighted visible panchromatic high-resolution imaging (HRI) sensor, and a CMIGITS-III GPS/INS unit in an integrated sensor assembly mounted inside the GA-8 cabin. ARCHER incorporates an on-board data processing system developed by Space Computer Corporation (SCC) to perform numerous real-time processing functions including data acquisition and recording, raw data correction, target detection, cueing and chipping, precision image geo-registration, and display and dissemination of image products and target cue information. A ground processing station is provided for post-flight data playback and analysis. This paper describes the requirements and architecture of the ARCHER system, including design, components, software, interfaces, and displays. Key sensor performance characteristics and real-time data processing features are discussed in detail. The use of the system for detecting and geo-locating ground targets in real-time is demonstrated using test data collected in Southern California in the fall of 2004.

Robust and accurate segmentation methods are important for the computerized evaluation of medical images. For treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, joint damage assessment in radiographs of hands is frequently used for monitoring disease progression. Current clinical scoring methods are based on visual measurements that are time-consuming and subject to intra and inter-reader variance. A solution may be found in the development of partially automated assessment procedures. This requires reliable segmentation algorithms. Our work demonstrates a se-mentation method based on multiple connected active appearance models (AAM) with multiple search steps using different quality levels. The quality level can be regulated by setting the image resolution and the number of landmarks in the AAMs. We performed experiments using two models of different quality levels for shape and texture information. Both models included AAMs for the carpal region, the metacarpals, and all phalanges. By starting an iterative search with the faster, low-quality model, we were able to determine the initial parameters of the second, high-quality model. After the second search, the results showed successful segmentation for 22 of 30 test images. For these images, 70% of the landmarks were found within 1.3 mm difference from manual placement by an expert. The multi-level search approach resulted in a reduction of 50% in calculation time compared to a search using a single model. Results are expected to improve when the model is refined by increasing the number of training examples and the resolution of the models.

The paper discusses the instrumentation of leak detection and location on underground water supply pipelines based on adaptive algorithms. The equipment is designed to be self-contained and portably mobile with sensors, signal conditioning and data acquisition units and a laptop PC operating signal processing, information analysis and instrument control. The vibrational acoustic signals collected on tubular pipelines are used for pinpointing a leak or leaks in buried pipelines. Because of the complexity and the heavy corruption with ambient noises, it is essential to use an appropriate signal model and the scheme of analysis and synthesis in order to extract leak signatures and specify leak locations. In addition, the features of vibrational acoustic signals vary with the materials, the sizes and the inbuilt conditions of tubular pipes. It is difficult to pre-determine the knowledge of signals, such as the spectral knowledge. Here, an adaptive detection and estimation strategy is proposed based on LMS adaptive filtering and modified Wavelet denoising. The availability for leak detection and pinpointing estimation is automatically analyzed by the signal processing procedure without any prerequisite on signals and the procedure may adaptively find the way to get better estimate.

With relatively high frame rates and the ability to acquire volume data sets with a stationary transducer, 3D ultrasound systems, based on matrix phased array transducers, provide valuable three-dimensional information, from which quantitative measures of cardiac function can be extracted. Such analyses require segmentation and visual tracking of the left ventricular endocardial border. Due to the large size of the volumetric data sets, manual tracing of the endocardial border is tedious and impractical for clinical applications. Therefore the development of automatic methods for tracking three-dimensional endocardial motion is essential. In this study, we evaluate a four-dimensional optical flow motion tracking algorithm to determine its capability to follow the endocardial border in three dimensional ultrasound data through time. The four-dimensional optical flow method was implemented using three-dimensional correlation. We tested the algorithm on an experimental open-chest dog data set and a clinical data set acquired with a Philips' iE33 three-dimensional ultrasound machine. Initialized with left ventricular endocardial data points obtained from manual tracing at end-diastole, the algorithm automatically tracked these points frame by frame through the whole cardiac cycle. A finite element surface was fitted through the data points obtained by both optical flow tracking and manual tracing by an experienced observer for quantitative comparison of the results. Parameterization of the finite element surfaces was performed and maps displaying relative differences between the manual and semi-automatic methods were compared. The results showed good consistency between manual tracing and optical flow estimation on 73% of the entire surface with fewer than 10% difference. In addition, the optical flow motion tracking algorithm greatly reduced processing time (about 94% reduction compared to human involvement per cardiac cycle) for analyzing cardiac function in three-dim

A robust image processing method with modified Otsu algorithm to recognize the road lane for a real-time autonomous vehicle was presented. The main objective of a proposed method was to drive an autonomous vehicle safely irrespective of road image qualities. For a possible real-time controlled autonomous vehicle steering, a detection area was predefined by lane segment, with previously obtained frame data, and the edges are detected on the basis of a lane width. For stable as well as psudo-robust autonomous driving with "good", "shady" or even "bad" road profiles, the variable threshold with modified Otsu algorithm in the image histogram, is utilized to obtain a binary image from each frame. Also Hough transform was utilized to extract the lane segment. Whether the image is "good", "shady" or "bad", always robust and reliable edges were obtained from the algorithms applied in this paper in a real-time basis. For verifying the adaptability of the proposed algorithm, a miniature vehicle with a camera was constructed and tested with various road conditions to prove its adaptability. Also, many highway road images were analyzed with proposed algorithm to prove its usefulness.
