Walsh-Haar function system that was first intruoduced by us is a new kind of function systems, and has a good global/local property. This function system is called Walsh ordering function system since its generation kernel functions belong to Walsh ordering Walsh function system. We worked out a recursive property of the matrix WHKRm+1 corresponding to the first KR m+1 Walsh-Haar functions in Walsh-Haar function system, and we also proved that Walsh-Haar function system is perfect and orthogonal similar to Walsh function system and Haar function system. Thus, discrete Walsh-Haar transformation (DW-HT) is an orthogonal transformation that can be widely used in signal processing. In this paper, using the recursive property of the matrix WHKRm+1 and the fast algorithm of discrete Walsh transformation (DWT) in Walsh ordering, we have designed a fast algorithm of Walsh ordering DW-HT based on the bisection technique. The idea and method used in this paper can be used for designing fast algorithms of other ordering DW-HTs and other discrete orthogonal transformations.

This paper presents algorithms that use data from eddy current sensors mounted in the engine casing for the purpose of gas turbine engine stability monitoring. The focus of this paper is stall detection. Development of a system to detect and compensate for potentially catastrophic engine failures and instability is the primary objective of this work. A motivating objective of our engine work in general has been the development of mathematically well-founded and efficient signal processing algorithms to perform gas turbine engine blade diagnostics and high cycle fatigue prognosis using a minimal number of blade tip monitoring sensors. Our work to date has focused on the general dynamics eddy current sensor (ECS). Our ultimate goal is to extend the functionality of the ECS system beyond diagnostics to active and automatic real-time control of gas turbine engines. Blade tip sensors such as eddy current, capacitive and optical have been being used for some time now in test stand applications to detect engine faults. It has been demonstrated that they are capable of measuring tip clearance, foreign object damage (FOD), blade vibration, and stall/surge. Much of the data analysis for these methods has been performed off line; however, rapid progress is being made toward the goal of real-time detection for use in onboard flight systems. To date, most signal processing techniques using blade tip sensors have been limited to simple parametric measurements associated with the sensor waveform, e.g., measurement of zero crossing locations for time of arrival information or maxima for tip clearance information. Using this type of parametric information, many computations require more than one sensor per stage. The use of a minimal number of sensors is an extremely important practical consideration since each pound that is added to an aircraft engine adds considerable costs over the life cycle of the engine. We consider the problem of constructing an aggregated estimator from a finite class of base functions which approximately minimizes a convex risk functional under the ℓ1 constraint. For this purpose, we propose a stochastic procedure, the mirror descent, which performs gradient descent in the dual space. The generated estimates are additionally averaged in a recursive fashion with specific weights. Mirror descent algorithms have been developed in different contexts and they are known to be particularly efficient in high dimensional problems. Moreover their implementation is adapted to the online setting. The main result of the paper is the upper bound on the convergence rate for the generalization error.

Much of image processing and vision uses 3 sensors because we ourselves have trichromatic vision. However, some solutions to vision problems use additional hardware not available to ourselves in order to get the best performance. For example, the idea of placing a coloured filter in front of a vision system, and capturing two images: one with-and another one without the filter has recently been revisited in the context of the illumination estimation problem. It was shown that the plus-filter illuminant estimation is easier to solve and so it is easier to estimate and discount illumination compared with traditional methods. In this paper we propose that this two image approach is in fact plausible for human visual processing. Indeed, a little known and little explained optical fact is that the light striking the central part of the retina is pre-filtered with a yellow filter (the macular pigment) but no pre-filtering occurs to light striking other parts of the retina. Since the world we see is a composite of several images taken at different fixation points we argue that the visual system in principle has access to two images: normal RGBs + RGBs measured through a yellow filter. Experiments demonstrate that the illumination estimation performance that is possible starting with the human vision system sensitivities is excellent and as for machine vision is much better than the non plus-filter algorithms. We discuss the wider relevance of this result to the the vision and imaging community.

Mammography is a widespread imaging technique for the early detection of breast cancer. Microcalcification clusters, visible in X-ray images, are important indicators for the diagnosis. In the past, many image processing methods were developed to detect and to classify lesions as being malignant or benign using only cluster data extracted from the 2D-images. However, a microcalcification cluster is a 3D-entity whose shape is also an important information for radiologists. This paper presents a method for the 3D-reconstruction of microcalcification positions defining the cluster shapes. The key idea of the reconstruction algorithm lies in the modelling of mammographic units using a camera with virtual optics. This model can be used to calibrate digital systems with different geometries and with various physical acquisition principles. The different steps of the computer vision problem related to the cluster reconstruction (namely the acquisition system calibration, the microcalcification segmentation, the microcalcification matching and the 3D-reconstruction) are described. First results are then given for two phantoms. Tests with one phantom show that the inherent mean accuracy of the 3D-microcalcification localization algorithm is 16.25 /spl mu/m. The other phantom is made of materials simulating the behaviour of both mammary tissue and microcalcifications towards X-rays. Tests using this phantom prove that the algorithm is effectively able to restitute true cluster shapes. Finally, patient data are used to reconstruct real clusters and to check the algorithm validity. These results prove that the proposed cluster reconstruction algorithm is the first one which is usable in clinical situations.

There are already some extensions of rough set theory for incomplete information systems, such as tolerance relation, limited tolerance relation, similarity relation, and etc. But there are no approaches and algorithms for these extensions. A direct approach for processing incomplete information systems is developed in this paper, including discretization, attribute reduction, value reduction, and rule matching. This approach can be used in all kinds of extensions of rough set theory for incomplete information systems. It is both effective in complete and incomplete information systems.

Many optical or image processing tasks reduce to the optimization of some set of parameters. Genetic algorithms can optimize these parameters even when the functions they map are fairly complicated, but they can only do so the point where the fitness functions they are given can differentiate between good results and the best result. This can occur when the optimal point is in a region (in a three dimensional example) such as a plateau, where all the surrounding points are of very nearly the same fitness. If there are multiple peaks in close proximity, all of nearly the same fitness but with very deep divides, the algorithm will have trouble 'hopping' from one to the other. One way to overcome these obstacles is to scale the fitness values given by the fitness function, thereby gently modifying the fitness function from the point of view of the algorithm, thus rewarding the more fit solutions to a higher precision than would naturally occur. Four such scaling methods will be compared based upon their handling of a sample set of optical processing data. Success will be determined by comparing the variance over time, selection pressure over time, and best of generation graphs.
