We present a new technique for the automatic segmentation of multiband imagery. Our approach is based on the computation of a minimum spanning tree over a graph derived from the image. We use a fast graph-search algorithm and a custom tree-splitting algorithm to provide a high level of performance. This approach captures some of the gestalt characteristics of human perceptual grouping and is easily adaptable to a variety of spectral and spatial criteria. We demonstrate our technique on multispectral and hyperspectral imagery of the earth's surface.

Use of remotely sensed imagery to map lines of communication or revise existing maps is currently a labor-intensive process. In this paper, we present a system for automatically extracting lines of communication from high- resolution (less than 5-meter spatial resolution) multispectral imagery. Positive systems ADAR 5500 imagery is used to demonstrate system functionality. Our system includes automatic detection and identification algorithms, a geospatial database for storage and retrieval of results, a change detection component that compares newly detected lines of communication against stored database information, and a user interface that allows operator review and editing of automatically extracted results.

While able to measure the red, green, and blue channels, color imagers are not true spectral imagers capable of spectral measurements. In a previous paper [1], it was demonstrated that an estimate of a low resolution visible spectra of a naturally illuminated outdoor scene can be estimated from RGB values measured by a conventional color imager. In this paper we present a refined algorithm and document results in a study to estimate visible source spectra from solar illumination scenes using reflectance spectra generated from the USGS data base.

A single hyperspectral imaging sensor can produce frames with spatially-continuous rows of differing, but adjacent, spectral wavelength. If the frame sample-rate of the sensor is such that subsequent hyperspectral frames are spatially shifted by one row, then the sensor can be thought of as a parallel (in wavelength) push-broom sensor. An examination of data compression techniques for such a sensor is presented. The compression techniques are intended to be implemented onboard a space-based platform and to have implementation speeds that match the date rate of the sensor. Data partitions examined extend from individually operating on a single hyperspectral frame to operating on a data cube comprising the two spatial axes and the spectral axis. Compression algorithms investigated utilize JPEG-based image compression, wavelet-based compression and differential pulse code modulation. Algorithm performance is quantitatively presented in terms of root-mean-squared error and root-mean-squared correlation-coefficient error. Implementation issues are considered in algorithm development.

In the satellite remote-sensing domain, some technological and physical constraints are not in favor of acquiring high spatial resolution hyperspectral images when there is a need to use high resolution panchromatic images as complementary data to the hyperspectral images. If the data are taken nearly at the same time, some cross-sensor resolution enhancement techniques are able to produce a merged image as close as possible of what would be a high spatial resolution hyperspectral image. Multiresolution wavelet decomposition is the most interesting tool to perform this process. Some merging experiments on AVIRIS images (pixel size 20 meters) and USGS digital aerial images (pixel size 1 meter) have been conducted using this technique. They produced simulated AVIRIS images having a spatial resolution of 5 meters. If the preliminary co-registration step remains critical, global spectral statistics and visual qualitative experimentations show that the result is a non-disturbed hyperspectral image, good candidate for straight exploitation.

This paper describes the LOCATE TNG system, which generates map products directly from multispectral imagery in an automated fashion. The LOCATE TNG system uses spectral and spatial feature information to extract various types of man- made lines of communication (LOCs) from imagery and generate them in the form of digital vector maps. The generated maps may be compared against reference digital maps to automatically find new or changed LOCs. The original LOCATE (lines of communication apparent from thematic mapper evidence) system was designed and developed to use landsat thematic mapper imagery having a resolution of 30 m. LOCATE TNG (the next generation) has been redesigned to also have the capability to use high resolution multispectral imagery to be available from the next generation of commercial satellites. These satellites will provide multispectral and panchromatic imagery having resolutions down to 4 m and 1 m, respectively, thus dramatically improving the information available for exploitation. LOCATE TNG employs a hierarchical algorithmic approach to extracting layers of LOCs (primary roads, secondary roads, etc.) that may be used for GIS applications.

Numerous researchers have demonstrated the accuracy and utility of improved spatial resolution multispectral imagery by sharpening it with higher spatial resolution panchromatic imagery. A much more limited number of researchers have sharpened hyperspectral imagery with panchromatic imagery. In this research we have developed an algorithm that spatially sharpens specific ranges of hyperspectral bands with spectrally correlated multispectral bands of a higher spatial resolution to improve the spatial resolution of the hyperspectral imagery while maintaining or improving it's spectral fidelity. Preliminary validation of the algorithm has been conducted using a 7m AVIRIS scene of the Maryland Eastern Shore containing corn, soybean, and wheat fields. This data was used to simulate 28m HSI and 7m MSI that were used in the sharpening process. Initial analysis has verified the spectral accuracy of the sharpened data. In the next phase of the study, airborne spectral data from two different sensors will be used in the sharpening process with the results used as input for USDA/ARS crop yield and stress models.

This paper describes a research project evaluating the success of spatially sharpening spaceborne hyperspectral imagery with higher spatial resolution spaceborne multispectral imagery. In November 2001, NASA launched its first operational hyperspectral sensor, Hyperion, on the Earth Observing-1 spacecraft. Designed to study the utility of hyperspectral imagery collected from a space-based platform, Hyperion's utility is limited for certain applications by its spatial resolution. Successful spatial sharpening of Hyperion imagery with higher spatial resolution spaceborne multispectral imagery such as ASTER or QuickBird should further enhance the value of Hyperion imagery. In a previous two-year research initiative, the primary author demonstrated the utility of sharpening airborne hyperspectral imagery with higher spatial resolution airborne multispectral imagery. In its first year, that study simulated the sharpening process by utilizing a single airborne hyperspectral dataset to derive both a lower spatial resolution hyperspectral cube and a higher spatial resolution multispectral dataset. In its second year, this study utilized two airborne spectral collections on different platforms for the hyperspectral and multispectral datasets, and successfully demonstrated spatial sharpening despite geometry differences between the two platforms. The next logical step is to validate spatial sharpening of space-based hyperspectral imagery using higher resolution spaceborne multispectral imagery. This current research project evaluated the spatial and spectral utility of Hyperion imagery after sharpening with higher spatial resolution spacebome multispectral data from the ASTER or QuickBird satellites.

Pan-sharpening {fusing the spatial and spectral information between panchromatic (PAN) and multispectral (MSI) or hyperspectral (HSI) imagery of a common scene is a hot topic in remote sensing due to a wide range of applications such as target detection, vegetation monitoring, and subsurface detection (e.g. landmines), among others. However, the focus of panchromatic sharpening is generally placed on visual quality of the resulting image and image-wide summary spectral accuracy metrics. Here we are interested in radiometrically accurate panchromatic sharpening of hyperspectral imagery with particular emphasis on spectral algorithm performance. Four pansharpening algorithms are applied to hyperspectral imagery and evaluated for spectral/radiometric fidelity. Two datasets from SHARE2012 were used: one which features rural scene elements and one which features an urban scene. Target detection was also performed to evaluate algorithm sharpening performance. We find that although visually the performance of the four algorithms were roughly similar, they differ in spectral/radiometric fidelity as well as performance in ACE target detection.
