The release of harmful effluents into the earth's atmosphere is an increasing world-wide concern. Technical feasibility to detect and localize such releases is a necessary first step before sound policy decisions can be established to regulate such releases. This paper examines key system parameters by quantifying their effects in terms of Receiver Operating Characteristics(1) (ROC) curves. It establishes upper performance bounds based on perfect apriori information of the atmospheric state and thus can be used to gauge measured effectiveness of candidate detection algorithms. In the first part of this paper, a theoretical discussion is presented on the development of the probability density functions (pdfs) required to perform the ROC analysis. These pdfs are associated with l(2) measures of spectral vector magnitude lengths, a measurable quantity for effluent detection. It will be shown that these functions are non-Gaussian and are functions of the number of spectral bands in the data Generation of these functions are also discussed in this paper both analytical and through Monte Carlo methods. In the second half of this paper, ROC performance curves are generated for various sensor and source parameters. These curves are generated for various sensor noise and spectral aggregation conditions constrained by the assumption of shot-limited performance. Impacts of spectral aggregation and plume-to-ground temperature differentials are also examined and related to ROC performance. Parametric evaluations are confined to the long-wave infrared (LWIR) spectral regime where sensor resolution is systematically varied between 1.0 and 8.0 cm(-1). System models, analysis methodology, and ROC results are presented.

A project is developed assessing the utility of hyperspectral imagery to determine cross-country trafficability in support of military operations. Both AVIRIS hyperspectral data and Landsat TM multispectral data were used. The principal results confirmed that areas in the data exhibiting spectral characteristics similar to kaolinite reflectance spectrum were successfully mapped using the Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) algorithm. Comparison of the hyperspectral and multispectral mapping results, clearly illustrates the advantage of hyperspectral data. The areas identified using the hyperspectral data are much more precisely mapped. The difference in spatial detection pattern is true for both the SAM and ratio analysis techniques.

This paper presents a summary of a project assessing the utility of hyperspectral imagery to determine cross-country trafficability in support of military operations. hyperspectral imagery offers new capabilities to assess cross-country trafficability remotely. Development of recommended methodologies and procedures is the major thrust of this research. The use of spectral signature libraries is planned to help define areas to be avoided, such as areas with significant clay content. Likewise, other more compactable soils such as sandy loam can be located and used as preferred routes. This study develops methodologies and provides demonstrations of how hyperspectral imagery can be applied. The results indicate that accurate detection of specific soils in an unfamiliar area is far from easy. Soils, being mixtures of minerals and organic material, have spectral signatures that are subject to variation. The components of soil are sub-pixel entities that must be identified, separated, and unmixed in the right proportions. Additionally, the dominant spectral feature may not represent the overall dominant physical characteristic of the soil being studied. Both AVIRIS hyperspectral data and Landsat TM multispectral data were used. The principal results confirmed that areas in the data exhibiting spectral characteristics similar to the kaolinite reflectance spectrum, were successfully mapped using the Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) algorithm. This conclusion is based on reference soil maps, ground truth observation, sample collection, and laboratory analysis. Closely corresponding areas were also spectrally mapped using a band ratio procedure that has historically been used to define clays in Landsat TM data. Comparison of the hyperspectral and multispectral mapping results, clearly illustrates the advantage of hyperspectral data. Band sharpening involving multi-sensor and multi-resolution imagery is an excellent means of utilizing the complementary nature of various data types. The synergistic use of these imagery types can provide additional information that is not independently available in each source. In the case of band sharpening, a higher spatial resolution panchromatic (pan) image is fused with a lower spatial resolution multispectral image. This fusion creates a product with the spectral characteristics of the multispectral image and a spatial resolution approaching that of the panchromatic image. The goal of this project was to evaluate MSI band sharpening in four research areas. The first area explored the ''Effective Ground Sample Distance (GSD)'' and relative utility of multispectral imagery sharpened with panchromatic imagery. The second area examined interactions between data compression and the band sharpening process. The third area determined the effectiveness of band sharpening using a pair of high resolution sharpening bands covering different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The fourth area determined the effect of band sharpening on the accuracy of automated exploitation algorithms such as terrain categorization (TERCAT) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI).

multispectral and hyperspectral image sets contain large amounts of data which are difficult to exploit by manual means because they are comprised of multiple bands of image data that are not easily visualized or assessed. Non-literal imagery exploitation refers to a process that exploits non-spatial information by focusing on individual pixel signatures that span the spectral range of the sensor. GTE has developed a system that utilizes Evolutionary Computing techniques as a potential aid to imagery analysts to performs automatic object detection, recognition and materials identification on multispectral and hyperspectral imagery. The system employs sophisticated signature preprocessing and a unique combination of non-parametric search algorithms guided by a model based cost function to achieve rapid convergence and pattern recognition. The system is scaleable and is capable of discriminating decoys from real objects, identifying pertinent materials that comprise a specific object of interest and estimating the percentage of materials present within a pixel of interest (spectral unmixing).

A method for the combined correction of atmospheric and topographic effects has been developed. It accounts for horizontally varying atmospheric conditions and also includes the height dependence of the atmospheric radiance and transmittance functions to simulate the simplified properties of a 3-D atmosphere. A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is used to obtain information about surface elevation, slope, and orientation. Based on the Lambertian assumption the surface reflectance in rugged terrain is calculated. The method is restricted to high spatial resolution satellite sensors like Landsat TM and SPOT HRV, since some simplifying assumptions are being made to reduce the required image processing time. The algorithm can be applied to multispectral and panchromatic imagery.

It is common practice in digital imaging to apply a spatial modulation transfer function compensation (MTFC) function as a convolution filter to accomplish image sharpening. MTFC in the spatial domain is applied to back out blurring introduced by the various MTF degraders in the image chain. Analogously, in hyperspectral imaging, there is generally a blurring in the spectral dimension due to overlapping spectral bands. This blurring effect can cause narrow-band absorption features to become less apparent when a material is imaged. In a recent study at Kodak, we showed that a hyperspectral signature can be ''sharpened'' in the spectral dimension by developing a set of convolution kernels that effectively reduce the overlap among the spectral responsivity of the detectors (i.e., using an appropriate convolution kernel that effectively narrows the spectral responsivity of a detector). Our initial simulations have shown that the main limitation of this technique is its performance in noisy conditions.

We present a new technique for the automatic segmentation of multiband imagery. Our approach is based on the computation of a minimum spanning tree over a graph derived from the image. We use a fast graph-search algorithm and a custom tree-splitting algorithm to provide a high level of performance. This approach captures some of the gestalt characteristics of human perceptual grouping and is easily adaptable to a variety of spectral and spatial criteria. We demonstrate our technique on multispectral and hyperspectral imagery of the earth's surface.

Use of remotely sensed imagery to map lines of communication or revise existing maps is currently a labor-intensive process. In this paper, we present a system for automatically extracting lines of communication from high- resolution (less than 5-meter spatial resolution) multispectral imagery. Positive systems ADAR 5500 imagery is used to demonstrate system functionality. Our system includes automatic detection and identification algorithms, a geospatial database for storage and retrieval of results, a change detection component that compares newly detected lines of communication against stored database information, and a user interface that allows operator review and editing of automatically extracted results.
