In this paper, we proposed a P2P traffic management and optimization protocol named DDP (domain detecting protocol). DDP works in a cooperative way between network providers and P2P venders. With a light-weight, flexible, and open framework, DDP can be attached to all existing P2P systems without changing the original P2P protocols. DDP can guide P2P traffic to match the topology of the underlying network as far as possible. We implemented DDP on BitTorrent protocol and deployed a DDP caching system in a real MAN environment, and got excellent results in reducing BT traffic and optimizing user experience.

In this paper, we investigate the issues of survivability and efficiency in a heterogeneous mobile ad hoc network (MANET) and Sensor network as a combined network where the communications is achieved using a mixed MANET and Sensor network, referred to as SMANET for supporting mission critical applications. Using the cluster managed SMANET where, heterogeneous nodes with different capabilities and nodes from different organizations deployed within the same geographical area will support variety of multi-service mission critical applications while increasing the network lifetime. In this network, nodes from different organizations collaborate with each other for mission critical data to be delivered using multi-hop radio-sensor-radio type path routing while keeping the tactical operations supported by the battlefield command control structure transparent. While keeping the collaborative encounters, it is important to keep cross-organization data transfer at the lowest possible level for minimal disruption of the traffic within each organization and for security reasons. Assuming that all nodes are equipped with cognitive radio capability maintaining interoperability, we propose a novel routing metric that maximize the benefits from the collaboration of heterogeneous nodes and take the organizational constraints into account. Furthermore, we propose joint design of cognitive radio and multi-carrier modulation to maximize the bandwidth utilization and energy efficiency in SMANET. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method provide much needed survivability and efficiency in battlefield environment while keeping the cross-organization data transfer at the lowest possible level as a value added enhancement compared to homogeneous MANET or sensor networks. Same network design can also find use in civilian environment for supporting applications such as emergency preparedness management and traffic efficiency in congested transportation systems.

With the advent of the software communications architecture (SCA) for software defined radios (SDRs) and above 2 GHz (A2G) systems, the ability to develop reusable and portable software has increased significantly. Because the SCA deals primarily with GPP based software, it does not fully address all of the issues presented by A2G systems. The HC3 government reference architecture (GRA) was developed to provide an overall reference architecture for A2G systems and to extend the SCA concepts of reusability and portability into the FPGA components required by these systems. Another goal of the GRA is facilitating development of different components of the system by different developers along with allowing for an independent system integrator. The three roles defined by the GRA are the platform developer, the waveform developer and the system integrator. The hardware abstraction layer (HAL) concept is a key aspect of the GRA, bridging the gap between software/firmware (the waveform) and hardware (the platform) to allow many different waveforms to run on a single common platform while also facilitating independent development. Under an IR&D project, Raytheon teamed with L3-CSW to develop a detailed architecture and method by which a GRA programmable modem and the waveforms that run on it can be designed by cooperating parties incorporating a HAL and using the developer roles defined by the GRA. Raytheon and L3-CSW teamed to port existing A2G waveforms, including AEHF, SHF and CDL to a single modem to serve as a proof of concept and to develop the necessary architecture and methodology based on the GRA. In this paper we discuss the GRA, the HAL and how these concepts were used in a GRA-compliant implementation of multiple A2G waveforms on a single programmable modem in the context of the waveform developer and system integrator roles described by the GRA.

Summary form only given. The constant increase in the number of cars on the roads calls for effective means to improve road safety, transport efficiency, and passengers' comfort. To this end, the research community, the industries and the governments all over the world are investing much of their efforts and money in the development of integrated intelligent transportation systems (ITS) based on wireless communication networks. Several national/international projects have been recently launched around the world: DSRC, VSC, VII in USA, C2CCC in Europe, AVS in Japan and network on Wheels in Germany, to name a few. The road safety paradigm is moving from a passive one (air bags, ESP, etc.) to an active one, where sensors, radars, cameras, navigation systems, and microprocessors, commonly installed in vehicles, are integrated with wireless communication systems to support applications such as parking-assistance, lane- keeping, adaptive cruise-control, and many others. Vehicular Ad hoc networks (VANETs) can efficiently warn and inform drivers via direct wireless vehicle to vehicle communications, eventually reducing reaction time and information availability limitation. The creation of high-performance, highly reliable, highly scalable, and secure vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) poses extraordinary challenges related to the channel access, the routing information, the control of highly variable network topologies, the design of flexible middleware solutions to effectively support the application layer. In this context, the talk will highlight the current state of the art of VANETs over-viewing ongoing projects and standardization efforts. Moreover, we will also point out open issues on the design of communication protocols for VANETs, discuss on the directions for further research in this field.

Performance issues in Wireless Sensor networks (WSNs) play a vital role in many applications. Often the maximum allowable message transfer delay must be bounded in order to enable time-sensitive applications of WSNs like fire or intrusion detection systems. Hence, it is crucial to develop algorithms that minimize the worst-case delay in WSNs. In this work, we focus on the problem of placing multiple sinks such that the maximum worst-case delay is minimized while keeping the energy consumption as low as possible. For that purpose we develop an algorithm based on the Genetic Algorithm (GA) paradigm. To model and consequently control the worst-case delay of a given WSN we build upon the so-called sensor network calculus (a recent methodology introduced in [10]). In order to be able to assess the performance of the GA-based sink placement strategy we compare it to an exhaustive search algorithm as well as a Monte-Carlo search. all of the strategies are based on a discretization of the originally continuous search space into a finite search space, which forms a contribution of our work of independent interest. In the performance comparison with the other strategies the GA exhibits a favourable behaviour with respect to the quality of the solutions found and the computational effort invested. It thus seems to be a good candidate for addressing the problem of placing multiple sinks in large-scale time-sensitive WSNs.

The road vehicle communication system constitutes an important component of an intelligent transportation system (ITS). In this structure, control station is connected to base station via optical fiber for accomplishing high bandwidth data exchange. Due to millimeter-wave feature, the system has small cells and also provides high mobility. In order to have fast handover and dynamic bandwidth allocation, a medium access control scheme is used. Base stations are deployed along the road to support the communication link to a vehicle. In this paper, we use a quasi-crystal lens to focus the reflected waves to reduce the number of the base stations. The structure of the quasicrystal lens posses 12-fold symmetry and hence 12-fold symmetric quasi-crystal. In this quasi structure, we have demonstrated that if we select a proper slab thickness, we can achieve focusing in the outside of the slab as well as equal intensity of the source wave. © 2008 SPIE.

Currently, there are significant challenges faced by the farming industry, not least of which are a reduction in the available labour workforce, and a more 'corporate' style of farming. Such factors demand an increase in farming efficiency and productivity. This paper looks forward to the not too distant future, where the realisation of autonomous farming will aid in the farming communities surviving as well as competing in the global market. In this work, the autonomous farm is seen as a complex system-of-systems, where there is necessarily a seamless integration of requirements, bringing together the areas of robotics for autonomous farming, and precision agriculture (PA), which deals with issues of agronomy. In essence, agricultural robotics uses on-farm sensing and control to actuate autonomous farm machinery with the aim of satisfying agronomy-based objectives. We initially describe a system-of-systems architecture, or unified framework, where a vital building block is the existence of two data sets used as links, or communication, between the various sub-systems. These data sets include a precision farming data set (PFDS) formed off-line before crop cultivation, containing spatially precise navigation data for any and all autonomous machinery, and a precision agriculture data set (PADS), which is a continually evolving entity consisting more of agronomy data in relation to the crop. Secondly, research undertaken in autonomous farm machinery is highlighted, where we present a foundation for the autonomous and robust control of articulated farm vehicles for real-time trajectory tracking in the presence of uncertain conditions. Preliminary results are shown, highlighting the autonomous control of vehicles for the operations of crop seeding and non-herbicidal weeding.

Component failure in a WDM network is a serious problem that has attracted considerable attention in recent times. In a standard protection (or restoration) scheme the objective is to preserve the logical topology by switching over to back-up paths (or by setting up new lightpaths) after a fault occurs. In this paper we have proposed a new scheme where we handle a fault simply by modifying the traffic routing scheme to avoid the fault. We show that it is possible to guarantee that a significantly high number of requests for communication can be handled using this scheme, irrespective of the location of the fault. Two new integer linear program formulations have been presented using this approach. The first formulation assumes a fixed RWA, while the second finds the optimal RWA for maximizing guaranteed throughput. A large number simulation experiments demonstrate that, in the vast majority of cases, an optimal solution obtained using our second formulation not only generates a survivable routing but handles all the requests that the original fault-free logical topology was designed to handle.

The EU-funded XtreemOS project implements a grid operating system transparently exploiting resources of virtual organizations through the standard POSIX interface. Grid checkpointing and restart requires to save and restore jobs executing in a distributed heterogeneous grid environment. The latter may spawn millions of grid nodes ( PCs, clusters, and mobile devices ) using different system-specific checkpointers saving and restoring application and kernel data structures for processes executing on a grid node. In this paper we shortly describe the XtreemOS grid checkpointing architecture and how we bridge the gap between the abstract grid and the system-specific checkpointers. Then we discuss how we keep track of processes and how different process grouping techniques are managed to ensure that all processes of a job and any further dependent ones can be checkpointed and restarted. Finally, we present how Linux control groups can be used to address resource isolation issues during the restart.

With emerging applications in packet-transport networks such as IP-over-WDM networks (e.g., eBanking), packets need to be delivered within a bounded delay (i.e., given deadlines) with high probability. To satisfy such requirement, we propose an Inbuilt-Burstification Urgency-driven Scheduling (iBUS) Algorithm in IP-over-WDM networks. In this approach, packets are assembled into bursts according to their destinations by a preset timer. The timing burstification can reduce the amount of contentions, and support deadline constraints. Then all assembled bursts need to be scheduled efficiently with the deadline constraint. We introduce the concept of urgency degree as a scheduling metric. Bursts are scheduled according to their urgency degrees so that utilization of available network resources can be maximized under the constraint of deadlines. We also study a high-level variant of our algorithm, beta -iBUS, where the parameter beta is used to truncate the acceptable range of urgency degrees [0, 1] into [0, beta ] (where beta les 1) so that invalid scheduling caused by high urgency degrees can be minimized. Simulation experiments demonstrate that our proposal can achieve limited loss probabilities with the constraint of bounded delay.
