The evolution in wireless technologies has opened the door to a new class of plant automation architecture that offers adopters a significant strategic advantage. Driven by substantial and measurable cost savings in engineering, installation, and logistics, as well as dramatic improvements in the frequency and reliability of field data collection, automation experts and IT professionals are presented with an opportunity to deliver a major, positive impact to their respective company's bottom line. In terms of the key drives associated with adopting wireless technologies, the cost benefits are the most intuitive. However, another important consideration is safety. Some of the key drivers include: (1) Installation savings -^sInstallation of wirelessly connected assets is up to 10 times cheaper than the wired alterative and offers much faster startups and accelerated profits. In addition to the installation savings, engineering costs are dramatically reduced as extensive surveys and planning are no longer required to route wire back to junction boxes or control rooms. The reduced costs in wiring engineering, installation and maintenance combined with the increased data gathering flexibility is the primary driver for wireless migration. (2) Better information -^sReplacement of manual readings with automated measurement results in information that is more accurate, timely, and consistent. (3) Economy of Scale -^sDeployment of additional points in a network is incremental and may include integration into legacy systems. (4) Operational Savings -^sThe ability to quickly diagnose and troubleshoot plant operations and support predictive maintenance programs by monitoring facility assets. Additionally, identify costly problems leading to excess use of energy or raw materials. (5) Safer Operations -^sBy reducing human exposure to hazardous environments. Also, more frequent measurements and early detection of issues can help reduce or even prevent incidents or accidents.

Service providers today are facing the challenge of operating and maintaining multiple networks, based on multiple technologies. network Management System (NMS) solutions are being used to manage these networks. However the NMS is tightly coupled with Element or the Core network components. Hence there are multiple NMS solutions for heterogeneous networks. Current network management solutions are targeted at a variety of independent networks. The wide spread popularity of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is a clear indication that all of these independent networks will be integrated into a single IP-based infrastructure referred to as Next Generation networks (NGN) in the near future. The services, networkarchitectures and traffic pattern in NGN will dramatically differ from the current networks. The heterogeneity and complexity in NGN including concepts like Fixed Mobile Convergence will bring a number of challenges to network management. The high degree of complexity accompanying the network element technology necessitates network management systems (NMS) which can utilize this technology to provide more service interfaces while hiding the inherent complexity. As operators begin to add new networks and expand existing networks to support new technologies and products, the necessity of scalable, flexible and functionally rich NMS systems arises. Another important factor influencing NMS architecture is mergers and acquisitions among the key vendors. Ease of integration is a key impediment in the traditional hierarchical NMS architecture. These requirements trigger the need for an architectural framework that will address the NGNM (Next Generation network Management) issues seamlessly. This paper presents a unique perspective of bringing service orientated architecture (SOA) to legacy network management systems (NMS). It advocates a staged approach in transforming a legacy NMS to SOA. The architecture at each stage is detailed along with the technical advantages and bu

In this paper, a new methodology is presented for topology optimization of networked embedded systems as they occur in automotive and avionic systems as well as wireless sensor networks. By introducing a model which is (1) suitable for heterogeneous networks with different communication bandwidths, (2) modeling of routing restrictions, and (3) flexible binding of tasks onto processors, current design issues of networked embedded systems can be investigated. On the basis of this model, the presented methodology firstly allocates the required resources which can be communication links as well as computational nodes and secondly binds the functionality onto the nodes and the data dependencies onto the links such that no routing restrictions will be violated or capacities on communication links will be exceeded. Due to the often error-prone communication in networks, we allow for routing each data dependency over multiple routes in the networks. With this strategy, our methodology is able to increase the reliability of the entire system. This reliability analysis is based on Binary Decision Diagrams (BDDs) and is integrated in our multi-objective design space exploration. By applying Evolutionary Algorithms, we are able to consider multiple objectives simultaneously during the optimization process and allow for a subsequent unbiased decision making. An experimental evaluation as well as a demonstration of a case study from the field of automotive electronics will show the applicability of the presented approach. A Considerable research efforts in the networking community are focused on defining a new Internet architecture that not only solves some of the problems of the current design, but also meets future needs. Our work focuses on the issue of how to provide suitable abstractions for communication between end-systems. This is a particularly important aspect of the networkarchitecture as it is exposed to all applications and also determines what kind of services can be provided by the network. We present an architecture for network services that are implemented on router systems. We illustrate how control and data plane interact to provide the necessary end-to-end functionality. Our prototype implementation indicates that such a design is feasible and scalable for high-performance networks.
Detailed network planning analysis indicates wavelength blocking in all-optical ROADM networks incurs additional OEO for wavelength conversion, and constrains service reconfiguration. Analyses show that digital ROADM ...

'Always on' broadband-accessed network gateway (GW) control can facilitate inter-WLAN IP mobility, with seamless connectivity. The GW server plays a critical role in the overall WLAN IP (WIP) mobility architecture (IEEE Wireless communications and networking conference, WCNC, Atlanta, GA, 21 March 2004;Int. J. Wireless Inf. networks 2006;13(3):173-192). This paper provides a comparison of WIP with cellular IP (CIP) and mobile IP (MIP), and identifies the main requirements for a broadband-accessed network-based GW that supports WIP mobility. The paper then evaluates GW-contributed handoff message processing delay in the WIP architecture through an analytical system model and OPNET simulation model, and provides a comparison of the GW-contributed handoff message processing delays for non-preemptive vs preemptive queuing schemes. Both analytical and simulation results show that WIP handoff message processing delay at the GW has negligible impact on the overall system delay. Finally, this paper presents the simulation results of the fast routing table lookup and forwarding speed on the GAT overall performance, which can assist service providers in the challenging implementation issues that they face. We introduce our optical grid infrastructure where end-to-end, bandwidth-guaranteed lightpaths are established simultaneously. This is developed on a light-path network that employs wavelength-routing. One application may send a request for multiple lightpaths to the network, which establishes the lightpaths one-by-one. Thus, several lightpaths may be rejected due to simultaneous reservation of an identical wavelength or undesired wavelength use. The proposed control-layered structure consisting of application, optical-grid control, and optical-networkcontrol layers bridges the gap between applications and opticalnetworks. The optical-grid control layer translates an application request to form a set of lightpaths into multiple requests for the network. This layer is also capable of adjusting the available network interfaces of the hosts and the available wavelengths of the network such that all the lightpaths are likely to be established. We address our testbed network in the Tokyo metropolitan area and a collaborative work with e-VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry), which requires long-distance, high-speed, and non-data loss communication circuits in the network.

Modern data and communicationnetworks have been growing dramatically in diversity, heterogeneity and complexity. Hence the management of such dynamic networks is an extremely difficult task due to some key issues such as;the increasing network size and functionality, rapidly and continuously changing network topology and complexity. This paper introduces a management paradigm to give rise to the autonomic management solutions (Le., activation, monitoring, control, and administration) of management functionalities. It also introduces an architecture that (1) places lite various management functions (FCAPS) into a design structure that can be used to select those functions that may give way to autonomic management and (2) to design the algorithms that may fulfill the management function. This architecture consists of four horizontal logical layers (Products, Components, Services, and Resources Layers) and two vertical logical layers (Management layer and information layer). Autonomous management agents (Swarm agents in this context) sit in the management layer and can sense changes/events in the four horizontal layers and react autonomically to reconfigure and adapt themselves based on the information scattered and gathered over the network.

This paper proposes a slotted access protocol for WDM ring networkarchitecture suitable for Metropolitan Area networks. Each node uses a pair of tunable transmitter and tunable receiver to communicate exploiting all the fiber data wavelengths. Also, each node uses a pair of fixed tuned transmitter and fixed tuned receiver to exchange control information over a separate control wavelength. The proposed protocol efficiently faces the serious scalability problems that many WDMA ring protocols introduce, due to the use of a dedicated data wavelength per node for either transmission or reception. Performance evaluation is provided through theoretical analysis and through a discrete event simulation model using both Poisson and self-similar traffic sources, giving more realistic performance evaluation. Simulation results show that the proposed WDMA protocol manages efficient network utilization providing excellent fairness among the nodes. Comparative simulation results prove that the proposed access scheme achieves significant performance improvement compared with the study of [5] which employs nodes with one fixed tuned transmitter.
