Given that performance is excellent across backbone networks, and that performance is a problem end-to-end, it is clear that problems are concentrated towards the edge and in network transitions. To achieve good end-to-end performance, we need to diagnose (understand the limits of performance) and address (work with members and application communities to address those performance issues). We envision readily available performance information that is easy to find, ubiquitous, reliable, valuable, actionable (analysis suggests course of action), and automated (applications act on data received). The Internet2 End-to-End Performance Initative (E2Epi) currently focuses on the development and widespread deployment of perfSONAR [1][2], an international consortium developing a performance middleware architecture and a set of protocol standards for inter-operability between measurement and monitoring systems. perfSONAR is a set of open source web services that can be added, piecemeal, and extended to create a performance monitoring framework. It is designed to be standards-based, modular, decentralized, and open source. This makes it applicable to multiple generations of network monitoring systems and encourages outside development while still allowing it to be customized for individual science applications. perfSONAR is a joint effort of ESnet, GÉANT2 JRA1, Internet2, and RNP. The Internet2 network is a hybrid optical and IP network, that offers dynamic and static wavelength services. The Internet2 network Observatory supports three types of services: measurement, co-location, and experimental servers to support specific projects. This paper presents a novel architecture for Grid-enabled optical burst switched networks. We suggest an overall Grid network architecture and we propose a grid optical user network interface (***) able to bridge Grid and OBS network environment. *** functionalities such as resource availability, discovery, and reservation required to integrate local Grid and OBS domains are presented. Furthermore, extended OBS protocols to support aforementioned services are being described and implemented on an application-aware asynchronous optical burst switched network demonstrator. Fully functional edge and core OBS routers as well as their algorithms and functionalities are being presented.

In this paper we present a cost-benefit analysis of WDM optical network based on the cost of node architecture and on the quantity of successful connection requests. The network nodes are capable of performing all optical waveband grooming and wavelength conversion and electronic traffic grooming. The approach includes a connection admission control based on the bandwidth capacity of connection requests and on the first-fit algorithm. Computer simulations were performed using the topology of the NSFNet considering several scenarios of bandwidth capacity and node architectures. Results attest the usefulness of the proposed approach to select node architecture to match cost to accepted connections.

The Phosphorus(1,2) project focuses on delivering advanced network services to Grid users and applications interconnected by heterogeneous infrastructures. The project is addressing some of the key technical challenges to enable on-demand end-to-end network services across multiple domains. The Phosphorus network concept makes applications aware of their complete Grid resources environment-computational and networking- and its capabilities. Phosphorus enables and tests dynamic adaptive and optimised use of the heterogeneous network infrastructure interconnecting various high-end resources. The project will demonstrate on-demand service delivery across access-independent multi-domain/multi-vendor research network test-beds on a European and worldwide scope. Phosphorus enhances and demonstrates solutions that facilitate vertical and horizontal communication among applications middleware and the network resources across different domains, managed by existing network Resource Provisioning systems (NRPS), or domains that integrate a new Grid-GMPLS (G(2)MPLS) control Plane, both under a new AAA architecture to support policy based on-demand network resource provisioning. This G(2)MPLS extends ASON/GMPLS in order to provide part of the fanctionalities related to the selection, co-allocation and maintenance of both Grid and network resources, by exposing upgraded interfaces at the UNI and E-NNI network reference points -i.e. *** and G.E-NNI-. The project outcomes are going to be demonstrated in a worldwide test-bed.

This paper explores the future architecture possibilities of an integrated satellite and terrestrial network using new and radical technology building blocks such as: multiple-access, multi-beam RF satellite communications, wireless communications, free space optical communications, all-optical network transport/switching and analog transmission and processing over optical carriers that support coherent distributed platform sensing and communications. Not only can the future network performance and cost undergo quantum-leap improvements; such a network can have profound transforming effects on space and terrestrial system architectures for sensing, healthcare, early warning systems, disaster relief, research collaborations and other new commercial applications.

Buffering in all-optical networks is an important need and there are several approaches that have attempted to propose partial solutions, since optical memories are out of reach, nowadays. In this paper, we review the major approaches based on architectures using fixed length fiber delay lines (FDL). The main idea of these architectures is to lead optical packets in fiber and to profit from the transmitting time to delay transmitted signals. Secondly, we study less bulky architectures based on a combination of optical fiber components. The principle of these systems is to transmit the signal over a specified path depending on the required delay. Then, we propose a novel architecture based on the use of fiber Bragg gratings, optical circulator, wavelength converter, and optical amplifier. optical packets flowing in such an architecture are captured in a virtual loop and may leave it as soon as the control unit decides that. To evaluate the performances of the proposed architecture, we formally assess the dispersion, the loss, the signal to noise ratio and the achieved delay on departure.

Embedded communication networks are playing an increasingly important role in embedded and mission-critical systems. In this paper, a new architecture of FC-based embedded mission-critical network (FEMN) has been proposed firstly, FEMN adopt novel simplified architecture and compact signaling protocol that are different from FC standard. In the second part, paper focus on the topology survivability of embedded mission-critical network, introduce the vertex segment set to describe the amount of work done to destroy the network and how badly the network's damage is. We observe several existing parameters and introduce k-cutset tenacity to measure topology survivability of embedded mission-critical network. At last, we put forward a method to construct graph that could achieve the upper bound of k-cutset tenacity under special case.

Over the last five years, the US and Coalition troop presence within the US Central Command (USCENTCOM) Area of Responsibility (AOR) has increased in support of various operations, including Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). This buildup has resulted in the expansion of the satellite, ATM, fiber, and IP based networks within the CENTCOM AOR to support the Command, control, communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I) capabilities of the deployed warfighters. However, the rapid expansion of the CENTCOM network coupled with inconsistent network policies between the US Military services has resulted in the deployment of a less than optimal network architecture. In 2005, the CENTCOM J6 proposed an end-to-end engineering study to assess the state of the USCENTCOM Joint Theater C4I enterprise network. This study was meant to encompass all aspects of network operations in the CENTCOM AOR including transmission media, voice switching, data network routing, NetOps, and bandwidth management at the Defense Information systems network (DISN) Tier 0 and Tier 1 locations. As a result, three key areas of the CENTCOM network were analyzed: satellite and ATM transmission paths, Promina multi-service access platform utilization, and IP network topology including routing and switching protocols. Technology and policy enhancements were also analyzed to see how they could be used to improve the current CENTCOM network architecture.
