Reconfigurable architectures and NoC (network-on-chip) communication systems have introduced new research directions for technology and flexibility issues, which have been largely investigated in the last decades. Exploiting the flexibility of reconfigurable architectures, the run-time adap-tivity through run-time reconfiguration, opens a new area of research by considering dynamic reconfiguration. Since software parts of an embedded system can also be included into reconfigurable hardware by integration of an IP-based microcontroller, the reconfigurable architecture provides a flexible, multi-adaptive heterogeneous platform forHW/SW co-design. In this paper, we present the European integrated project MORPHEUS (1ST 027342). Its goal is to develop new heterogeneous reconfigurable SoCs with various sizes of reconfiguration granularity and to provide an integrated toolset of spatial and sequential design that can be used for mapping and execution of the target applications. Additionally a NoC approach is included in order to demonstrate the mentioned benefits and scalability for actual and future SoC design. The power of this approach will be demonstrated with four applications from the industrial environment.

In recent years we can witness a new wave of activities and projects to explore different paths towards Next Generation Internet. After the decade where the Internet Protocol becomes mainstream in communication networks integrating and carrying all new types of services with increasing traffic volume and complexity, there are rising concerns whether the aging Internet protocol architecture with its underlying legacy routing algorithms, control and security mechanisms would soon collapse under the load of new applications and the rapid change of traffic patterns and service generation paradigms in the next decade. In the talk we will focus on trends and evolution paths towards the Next Generation network. The talk will discuss these trends together with issues of system performance and stochastic scalability, which are current topics of intensive research. These issues are crucial to dimension networks and applications, both from network provider and equipment manufacturer viewpoints. Some observations on future services will commence the talk. It will discuss the notion of Multi-network Services, i.e. the paradigm shift from a network-centric view to a applicationcentric view. In the current existence of several wireless and wireline networks (PSTN, UMTS, WiMAX, etc.) users of different networks can install service-enabling software and start a new type of service in a short time scale and in a very dynamic way (e.g. VoIP platforms like Skype, software distribution schemes like Bittorrent, etc.). Those services are multi-networks services, which correspond to the term of Edge-based Intelligence.

optical burst switching (OBS) technology offers a promising solution for the next generation Internet backbone. However, call admission control (CAC) constitutes a critical issue in its services developments. Some studies have considered the CAC problem in OBS networks. Yet, all proposed schemes are limited to the use of mean values of some network parameters (MVA: Mean Values Approach), which may lead to false decisions in terms of traffic admission, and so the degradation of the network performances. In this paper, we propose a QoS-oriented scheme for a real time admission control in OBS networks. This may allow more accurate decision; thus, better QoS provision and more efficient resources utilization. We develop an analytic model for a mathematical formulation of the proposed scheme. We also propose a simulation that we conducted to validate the proposed scheme and evaluate its performances.

Recent remarkable advances in nanoscale silicon-photonic integrated circuitry specifically compatible with CMOS fabrication have generated new opportunities for leveraging the unique capabilities of optical technologies in the on-chip communications infrastructure. Based on these nano-photonic building blocks, we consider a photonic network-on-chip architecture designed to exploit the enormous transmission bandwidths, low latencies, and low power dissipation enabled by data exchange in the optical domain. The novel architectural approach employs a broadband photonic circuit-switched network driven in a distributed fashion by an electronic overlay control network which is also used for independent exchange of short messages. We address the critical network design issues for insertion in chip multiprocessors (CMP) applications, including topology, routing algorithms, path-setup and tear-down procedures, and deadlock avoidance. Simulations show that this class of photonic networks-on-chip offers a significant leap in the performance for CMP intrachip communication systems delivering low-latencies and ultra-high throughputs per core while consuming minimal power

Recently there has been a great deal of research on using mobility in sensor networks to assist their sensing tasks. In this paper, we propose a policy-based session control protocol for disruption tolerant sensor networks (DTSNs) called Billiards. In a DTSN, all messages are transported by the physical motion of participants (mobile nodes) in the network. When a large volume of data or continuous data is required to be transferred, there exists a problem determining how the data is fragmented and how the mobile nodes are formed for carrying the data to the destination. To overcome these issues, we propose a suitable method of session control which is determined based on a state of surrounding mobile nodes such as number, maximum-velocity and buffer-size. Billiards also takes a system policy of either delay minimization or energy efficiency into consideration. In this paper, we describe the protocol and model of Billiards and analyze the each model. We also show its effectiveness through experiments with utilizing mobile robots.

Wireless sensor networking research has been mainly focused on internal wireless sensor network issues such as MAC and routing protocols, energy saving, HW design and to some extent on the architecture of gateways that connect a wireless sensor network with the rest of the world. Wireless sensor networks have been seen as dedicated to one task by one owner. On the other hand, our research is focused on integration of wireless sensor networks into existing networks, primarily mobile ones, and provision of sensor based and/or enhanced services to remote users. Therefore, we have been working on designing an architecture that utilizes the existing infrastructure to interconnect independent wireless sensor networks and to provide data aggregation and actuator control services. In the proposed architecture, sensor networks (small or large, deployed for any purpose and by anyone) represented by their gateways are treated as leaf nodes hanging off a mobile or fixed network that use these networks to interact with remote and local users. Each gateway exposes the capabilities of its sensors, actuators and the sensor network as a whole. This information is used by sensor services middleware to query/command sensor ecosystems on behalf of applications and remote users interested in sensor measurements or actuator control. The details of the interaction between the gateways and its sensors/actuators are of no interest to the remote users. Further, we consider the whole wireless sensor networking landscape as an open market where the underlying mobile and fixed networks facilitate the interaction between the sensor networks and the consumers of the information they produce. Each sensor network is first of all a sensor information provider that offers specific sensor information defined by the type of available sensors and their spatial and temporal conditions to the interested users. This paper proposes a novel multimedia network backbone architecture that supports all-optical transmission and quality of service (QoS). A new media access control (MAC) protocol for this network named CSMA/CP (carrier sense multiple access/carrier preemption) is used to directly transport variable size IP packets on the DWDM ring network without encapsulating IP packets to SONET; it improves the transport efficiency of network In addition, this network also provides the survivability function to increase reliability for restoring any node or fiber failures. In the thesis, the system model of the network is built, analyzed, and simulated. Simulation results show the proposed MAC protocol is able to take higher node throughput and lower packet latency. Finally, the proportional delay differentiated mechanism is added for this system to support differentiated services (DiffServ).

WIMAX is predicted to be a serious competitor to existing wireless systems (WLL, LMDS, GSM, UMTS), offering an advanced air-interface and all-IP architecture, which implies more complex network design and deployment. This tutorial aims to provide a design process and generic methodology that can be applied in different WIMAX deployment scenarios. The presentation of the methodology will be structured in such way to address both industrial and academic audience. The tutorial will present design guidelines and best practice information, based on theory and instructor's experience in actual deployments, and outline a mathematical approach of WIMAX network design, which is currently far from optimum given the technological complexity. The tutorial also aims to address ways to improve the design process for current WIMAX networks and also highlight several potential research issues.

We present an "artificial neural tissue" (ANT) architecture as a control system for autonomous multirobot tasks. This architecture combines a typical neural-network structure with a coarse-coding strategy that permits specialized areas to develop in the tissue which in turn allows such emergent capabilities as task decomposition. Only a single global fitness function and a set of allowable basis behaviors need be specified. An evolutionary (Darwinian) selection process is used to derive controllers for the task in simulation. This process results in the emergence of novel functionality through the task decomposition of mission goals. ANT-based controllers are shown to exhibit self-organization, employ stigmergy and make use of templates (unlabeled environmental cues). These controllers have been tested on a multirobot resource-collection task in which teams of robots with no explicit supervision can successfully avoid obstacles, explore terrain, locate resource material and collect it in a designated area by using a light beacon for reference and interpreting unlabeled perimeter markings. Transportation facilities management faces the challenge of huge amount of geographically dispersed facilities. communication between them is one of the critical issues. Recent studies show that IT technology is one of efficient solutions. The development of IPv6 enables the possibility of connecting all the facilities to Internet with its large address space and improved performance in routing, mobility and safety. This paper presents a layered tree model of managing transportation facilities based on IPv6. According to the proposed model, different transportation facilities can be managed uniformly over the widely spread road network. And the paper discusses how the model structure is built, the management functions and the communication features based on the model. Then, a demo application is introduced to show that the tree structure is in accordance with next generation Internet thus could support for future ITS.
