network protocols in layered architectures have historically been obtained on an ad-hoc basis, and much of the recent cross-layer designs are conducted through piecemeal approaches. network protocols may instead be holistically analyzed and systematically designed as distributed solutions to some global optimization problems in the form of generalized network utility maximization (NUM), providing insight on what they optimize and structures of the network protocol stack. This paper presents a short survey of the recent efforts towards a systematic understanding of "layering" as "optimization decomposition", where the overall communication network is modeled by a generalized NUM problem, each layer corresponds to a decomposed subproblem, and the interfaces among layers are quantified as functions of the optimization variables coordinating the subproblems. Furthermore, there are many alternative decompositions, each leading to a different layering architecture. Industry adoption of this unifying framework has also started. Here we summarize the current status of horizontal decomposition into distributed computation and vertical decomposition into functional modules such as congestion control, routing, scheduling, random access, power control, and coding. Key messages and methodologies arising out of many recent work are listed. Then we present a list of challenging open issues in this area and the initial progress made on some of them.

This paper addresses various implementation issues in an all-photonic overlaid-star network, where there can be multiple fibers between an edge and a core node and multiple wavelength channels in each fiber. By revisiting the fundamental star topology, an asymmetric multiconnection network is developed to model the node connections. A network flow model and a parallel time- wavelength assignment algorithm are then presented to solve the routing, wavelength assignment and time slot assignment problems simultaneously for the Time-Division- Multiplexing (TDM) operation. This topology can reduce the computing complexity and the cost of switching and routing. We demonstrate the feasibility of such implementations by evaluating different link resources, traffic patterns and other typical factors.

The goal of the next-generation all-IP wireless networks is to offer users the capability of achieving pervasive network access with the full support of integrated multimedia services that require various data rates and quality of service (QoS). In such an environment, a single service could be offered at different speeds at different locations/times via separate systems. In order to address resource management and call admission control in cellular/WLAN inter working, a Priority based service interworking architecture with hybrid coupling is presented. The main objective of this paper is to provide better QoS to high-prioritized voice traffic. An effective call admission control strategy is proposed for better QoS provisioning and efficient resource utilization. The results show that the proposed scheme is very efficient in serving voice traffic compared to WLAN-first scheme

In recent years, the optical Transport network (OTN) systems have been introduced widely, however, wide adoption has been limited due to the immature infrastructural issues. The OTN infrastructure takes the responsibility of data and signal transmission for substratal layer, as well as provides carrying and maintaining services (mostly the IP-based traffic today) through an optical data transport control plane. Thus, this paper focuses on the latest OTN data control plane and therefore gives a comprehensive introduction on the integrated IP optical peer control plane.

This paper presents a novel AAA architecture featuring the use of role-based access control and authentication for a converged wireless network where a single operator, as in one of the North American operators who offer both cellular and DSL service, provides the converged services and broadband access. Important features, such as mutual authentication, fast roaming and NAT traversal issues in heterogeneous wireless networks, are discussed. In addition, the paper proposes a modeling approach to address converged network security in a systematic and cost efficient manner

This paper describes a framework for practical and efficient monitoring of a wireless sensor network. The architecture proposed exploits the dynamic reasoning capabilities of the situation calculus in order to assess the sensor network behavior before actually deploying all the nodes. Designing a wireless sensor network for a specific application typically involves a preliminary phase of simulations that rely on specialized software, whose behavior does not necessarily reproduce what will be experienced by an actual network. On the other hand, delaying the test phase until deployment may not be advisable due to unreasonable costs. This paper suggests the adoption of a hybrid approach that involves coupling an actual wireless sensor network, composed of a minimal set of nodes, with a simulated one. We describe a framework that implements a logical monitoring entity able to analyze the network behavior by means of a superimposed communication control network. The system aims to enhance the simulation environment with a logical reasoning unit in order to extract higher level information about the network state, used to provide the network designer with guidance during the pre-deployment design phase.

To transmit data and communication signals, Tehran Regional Electric Company (T.R.E.C.) uses different dispatching systems. Because of wide bandwidth and high quality of signal transmission, optical fiber is a suitable technology for the exploitation and management of power transmission and distribution. In addition, optical fiber communication provides telecontrolling and telemetring, as well as sending the protection signals. Thus this technology can provide all of the T.R.E.C.'s dispatching requirements. In fiber optic communication, considering the high quality of service and low cost for each channel, SDH technology is an optimum choice compared with other technologies. To overcome the deficiencies of SDH technology, access IP's facilities, and also control and optimize the protection of power network, NGSDH technology based on the smart ASON technique is chosen.

When developing embedded systems, there is currently a trend to move from a traditional federated approach, where computer systems are developed for their own dedicated hardware architecture, to an integrated approach, where computer systems are encapsulated as subsystems and later integrated on a shared hardware architecture. The task of integrating subsystems is complex, and in resource constrained systems efficient techniques and methods are required. In this paper the issue of subsystem integration is thoroughly discussed, and it is shown how to use Server-CAN, a network scheduler for the controller area network, in the context of subsystem integration. As the network is a resource shared by all subsystems in a distributed architecture, its role in the integration process is particularly important. Here, the usage of an efficient and flexible network scheduler is essential.
