The 3GPP system is currently being evolved into a system that is composed of heterogeneous access systems with the aim to provide various services at a higher-data-rate and lower-latency based on packet switched networks. Efficient resource usage, charging and international roaming, inherent features within the 3GPP system, are among the key capabilities to be retained in the evolved system. The policy control and charging (PCC) architecture allows operators to perform service based QoS policy and flow based charging control. This paper describes the PCC architecture and how it may evolve in the future 3GPP system for both non-roaming and roaming scenarios. Different possible architectural options are analysed, where the advantages as well as the associated issues arising from these different options are described. The level of impact of the proposed architecture on the baseline (Release 6/7) radio access and core network architecture is also highlighted

The concept of a fiber aided wireless network architecture (FAWNA) is introduced in [Ray et al., allerton conference 2005], which allows high-speed mobile connectivity by leveraging the speed of optical networks. In this paper, we consider a single-input, multiple-output (SIMO) FAWNA, which consists of a SIMO wireless channel and an optical fiber channel, connected through wireless-optical interfaces. We propose a scheme where the received wireless signal at each interface is quantized and sent over the fiber. Though our architecture is similar to that of the classical CEO problem, our problem is different from it. We show that the capacity of our scheme approaches the capacity of the architecture, exponentially with fiber capacity. We also show that for a given fiber capacity, there is an optimal operating wireless bandwidth and an optimal number of wireless-optical interfaces. The wireless-optical interfaces of our scheme have low complexity and do not require knowledge of the transmitter code book. They are also extendable to FAWNAs with large number of transmitters and interfaces and, offer adaptability to variable rates, changing channel conditions and node positions

The formation flying of precisely controlled spacecraft in deep space can be used to implement optical instruments capable of imaging planets in other solar systems. The distance of the formation from Earth necessitates a significant level of autonomy and each spacecraft must base its actions on its estimates of the location and velocity of the other spacecraft. Precise coordination and control is the key requirement in such missions and the flow of information between spacecraft must be carefully designed. Doing this in an efficient and optimal manner requires novel techniques for the design of the on-board estimators. The use of standard Kalman filter-based designs can lead to unanticipated dynamics - which we refer to as disagreement dynamics - in the estimators' errors. We show how communication amongst the spacecraft can be designed in order to control all of the dynamics within the formation. We present several results relating the topology of the communication network to the resulting closed-loop control dynamics of the formation. The consequences for the design of the control, communication and coordination are discussed

In this paper, we propose a new wavelength converter placement scheme called Adaptive First Load Priority, useful for designing and planning of optical networks with sparse-partial wavelength conversion architecture. The adaptive FLP is an extension of the FLP (First Load Priority) placement scheme proposed by authors in a previous work [13]. Initially, we provide a performance evaluation of FLP. Comparing to others wavelength converter placement schemes proposed in the literature like XC scheme [5], our results show that FLP achieves the best performance at all scenarios studied, very close to that one achieved with a full-complete wavelength conversion architecture. However, we could observe that, after a certain threshold, just adding moreWavelength Converter Routers (WCR) with the FLP scheme may not have enough improvement in network performance that justifies a higherWCR cost. The Adaptive First Load Priority scheme was conceived in order to minimize the amount of WCRs used by FLP scheme, improving its cost benefit. A cost-benefit (ratio gain) study showing a superior performance of Adaptive FLP scheme is presented.

This paper describes the design (hardware and software) and implementation of a modular communication system based on CAN network. The motivation of the work is related to the real-time distributed control systems field. The goal is to own the complete control of the communication stack when building embedded distributed prototypes. This would allow managing those communication issues that affect real time performance (i.e. computation of worst case execution times and priority assignment to tasks and messages). This CAN implementation (rtfCANopen) is modular, inexpensive, auto-downloadable and self-configurable. A case study, consisting in an autonomous mobile robot that uses rtfCANopen, is described. This prototype is designed and analysed using the Real-Time Framework developed by authors. This framework consists of a set of tools for developing real-time distributed systems and it covers all the phases: specification, analysis, simulation and code generation of distributed applications.

In this paper, an advanced architecture for embedded control systems to be used in a mobile biped robot, called YABIRO-II, is presented. The robot has a total height of 55 cm, and a total weight of 4 Kg. Also, it has a total of 27 degrees of freedom (DOF). This number of joints enables YABIRO-II to produce many different gait configurations, and is also suitable to test and validate the proposed distributed control architecture. This distributed architecture has been designed to obtain a high technological robot platform. Also, a real time software platform has been also developed to control the robot from an embedded-PC node, helped by a reliable dual-CAN network to distribute all the robot information between sensors and actuators nodes

Ad hoc wireless networks can be described as dynamic multi-hop wireless networks with mobile nodes. However, the mobility condition can be relaxed, and we can consider an ad hoc wireless network as a reconfigurable network where all the nodes are connected to the local environment through wireless links, and where there is not a central or dominant nodes opposed to, for example, the case of cellular wireless networks where a base station is located in each cell. When ad-hoc networks are backboned by fibers, distortion of the optical link presents one of the major issues. In this paper, we will be addressing one of the fundamental problems, namely chromatic dispersion compensation in the fiber optic prior reaching the access points. This will ensure an adequate better quality of signal in the applied network.

Internal switches in all-photonic networks do not perform data conversion into the electronic domain, thereby eliminating a potential capacity bottleneck, but the inability to perform efficient optical buffering introduces network scheduling challenges. In this paper we focus on the problem of scheduling fixed-length frames in all-photonic star-topology networks with the goal of minimizing rejected demand. We formulate the task as an optimization problem and characterize its complexity. We describe the minimum rejection algorithm (MRA), which minimizes total rejection, and demonstrate that the fair matching algorithm (FMA) minimizes the maximum percentage rejection of any connection. We analyze through OPNET simulation the rejection and delay performance.

The all-photonic overlaid star network (APOSN) provides a simple architecture for high-speed backbone networks using available optical technologies. We consider in this paper a distributed signaling and scheduling protocol to enable prompt responding and flexible control of traffic demands. A contention-based approach is used for bandwidth allocation, and there is no coordination among the edge switches and the edge switches transmit traffic to the egress switches via the core switch at any time. Two schemes are considered here: the optical burst switching (OBS) operation that is random, as opposed to the more orderly scheduled distributed TDM (DTDM). By studying the operation ranges of various typical parameters for these two schemes as well as their variants, we are able to provide performance tradeoffs and insights into the effect of system parameter settings

Complex control software problems can be solved by using structured design methods that take advantage of hardware abstraction and concurrency. In our lab, a toolchain has been developed that facilitates such a design method. This paper presents two extensions to this toolchain. The first, a distributed simulation framework, enables one to simulate a complete distributed control system, prior to the actual implementation. Focus has been on the influence the network communication exerts on the overall behavior of the system. The second extension, a new communication framework, allows for a smooth transition from simulation to a real control system, by hiding all low-level communication details from the control software. This separates the concerns of the control software from distribution and inter-node communication issues, creating freedom in process allocation.
