In this paper, an advanced architecture for embedded control systems to be used in a mobile biped robot, called YABIRO-II, is presented. The robot has a total height of 55 cm, and a total weight of 4 Kg. Also, it has a total of 27 degrees of freedom (DOF). This number of joints enables YABIRO-II to produce many different gait configurations, and is also suitable to test and validate the proposed distributed control architecture. This distributed architecture has been designed to obtain a high technological robot platform. Also, a real time software platform has been also developed to control the robot from an embedded-PC node, helped by a reliable dual-CAN network to distribute all the robot information between sensors and actuators nodes

Ad hoc wireless networks can be described as dynamic multi-hop wireless networks with mobile nodes. However, the mobility condition can be relaxed, and we can consider an ad hoc wireless network as a reconfigurable network where all the nodes are connected to the local environment through wireless links, and where there is not a central or dominant nodes opposed to, for example, the case of cellular wireless networks where a base station is located in each cell. When ad-hoc networks are backboned by fibers, distortion of the optical link presents one of the major issues. In this paper, we will be addressing one of the fundamental problems, namely chromatic dispersion compensation in the fiber optic prior reaching the access points. This will ensure an adequate better quality of signal in the applied network.

Internal switches in all-photonic networks do not perform data conversion into the electronic domain, thereby eliminating a potential capacity bottleneck, but the inability to perform efficient optical buffering introduces network scheduling challenges. In this paper we focus on the problem of scheduling fixed-length frames in all-photonic star-topology networks with the goal of minimizing rejected demand. We formulate the task as an optimization problem and characterize its complexity. We describe the minimum rejection algorithm (MRA), which minimizes total rejection, and demonstrate that the fair matching algorithm (FMA) minimizes the maximum percentage rejection of any connection. We analyze through OPNET simulation the rejection and delay performance.

The all-photonic overlaid star network (APOSN) provides a simple architecture for high-speed backbone networks using available optical technologies. We consider in this paper a distributed signaling and scheduling protocol to enable prompt responding and flexible control of traffic demands. A contention-based approach is used for bandwidth allocation, and there is no coordination among the edge switches and the edge switches transmit traffic to the egress switches via the core switch at any time. Two schemes are considered here: the optical burst switching (OBS) operation that is random, as opposed to the more orderly scheduled distributed TDM (DTDM). By studying the operation ranges of various typical parameters for these two schemes as well as their variants, we are able to provide performance tradeoffs and insights into the effect of system parameter settings

Complex control software problems can be solved by using structured design methods that take advantage of hardware abstraction and concurrency. In our lab, a toolchain has been developed that facilitates such a design method. This paper presents two extensions to this toolchain. The first, a distributed simulation framework, enables one to simulate a complete distributed control system, prior to the actual implementation. Focus has been on the influence the network communication exerts on the overall behavior of the system. The second extension, a new communication framework, allows for a smooth transition from simulation to a real control system, by hiding all low-level communication details from the control software. This separates the concerns of the control software from distribution and inter-node communication issues, creating freedom in process allocation.

In this paper, we propose a call admission control scheme for mobile cellular network. The proposed scheme is based upon the dynamic channel allocation (DCA) mechanism, where a cell is allowed to borrow the unused channels of its surrounding cells and it's done when all the nominal channels are already occupied by the traffic. In the paper, we consider a multi-service system that supports voice/data integrated service. all the nominal channels provide services to different traffic types and when these channels are fully utilized by the mixed traffic, the borrowing of channel is done under the DCA environment. In this scheme, the borrowed channels are assigned to provide services to handoff calls only. Here we analyze the proposed scheme based on Markovian chain. Our analysis reveals the fact that the proposed scheme greatly reduces forced termination due to handoffs ensuring the better QoS in a mobile cellular network

User owned and managed optical networks offer new benefits compared to carrier networks. There are basically two types of user owned and managed optical networks: metro dark fibre networks and long-haul wavelength networks. A user-controlled lightpath provisioning system is designed to address the network management challenges, where only the customer has complete visibility of its own network and no provider can see all the network elements. The prototyped management software has a service-oriented architecture and uses the Jini and JavaSpaces technologies. Within one management system for a federation, there are six key components: a Jini Lookup Service, an instance of JavaSpaces for storage of Light Path Objects (LPOs), a Jini Service Access Point (SAP), an LPO service, an instance of switch communication service for each switch in the transport layer and a Grid SAP. Since the new management system is a distributed system and the new management system may be deployed over a public Internet infrastructure, secure access to the management modules is required. The application of existing system security technologies to the new management system is analyzed. To securely transfer objects across a network, SSL is used to encrypt RMI data streams and thus data streams between Jini services. To securely execute a dynamically downloaded Java class, Jini adopts the Java security model. To securely use a dynamically downloaded proxy to communicate to a remote service, Jini Extensible Remote Invocation is implemented to support security features such as invocation constraints, remote method control, and the trust verification model.

The basic idea and requirement of spinning reserve from responsive load are introduced. The responsive load resource of Shenyang City is analyzed based on the real load data in 2004 and 2005. The architecture of monitoring and control system for responsive load is discussed based on intelligent energy management network system of the Shenyang Power Supply Company. The system optimal control model is also addressed. all the analysis results show that the responsive load resource in Shenyang is available in abundance. It is a valuable field to use the responsive load resource more effectively

network based integrated navigation systems are a multidisciplinary effort whose aim is to produce a network structure and components that are capable of integrating sensors, actuators, communication, and control algorithms in a manner to suit real-time navigation and/or obstacle avoidance. There are many challenges to be overcome in order to put such a distributed and heterogeneous system together. This paper deals with some of these issues, i.e. the adverse effect of processing delays on the system and efficient integration of different modules. This paper describes a delay-resistant sensory-motor module for navigating a differential drive unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) in an indoor cluttered environment. The module consists of an early vision edge detection stage, a harmonic potential field (HPF) planner; a network based quadratic curve fitting controller and gain schedule middleware, (GSM). Though the different techniques and algorithms used to implement the navigation system have been previously well-studied algorithms, the novel contribution in this paper is the way all these different modules are integrated together for the first time to create an efficient structure for a network based integrated navigation system making it easy to implement and realize for many different applications. The structure of this module and its components are described. Thorough experimental results along with performance assessment comparing to the previous implementation are also provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the new integrated navigation structure

Convergence between telecommunications and the broadcast worlds is one of the trends of current network evolution. The UMTS specifications are being enhanced to support broadcast and multicast down to the end-user terminal. The multimedia broadcast /multicast service (MBMS) bearer services define a point-to-multipoint capability on the UMTS radio interface. The Institut Eurecom has developed, in the context of several research projects, an experimental software radio platform based on UMTS-TDD that provides direct interconnection with an IPv6 core network. Its contribution to the European research project Daidalos consists in integrating the MBMS point-to-multipoint bearer service in the radio platform and in the Daidalos architecture. This integration requires the identification and resolution of several specific topics such as the sharing of radio channels with the unicast traffic. Also, the sequence model for the service activation and deactivation must be revised to ensure on-request radio resource allocation. Finally, as part of the IP mobility architecture, the project envisions a seamless handover between a DVB-T cell and an MBMS cell. This paper addresses all these issues and presents some results of the implementation of this service on a software radio experimental platform
