The data multiplex system (DMS), AN/USQ-82(V), first installed in the DDG 51 Arleigh Burke class destroyers DDGs 51-78, is a multi-protocol shipwide area network specifically intended for real-time control system communications. Conceived as a redundant coaxial cable system supporting Navy-specific interfaces and communications protocols over a circuit-switched infrastructure, DMS allows the intercommunication of major ship systems. DMS has evolved to incorporate and support open architecture, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products. The DMS backbone network was updated to a redundant fiber optic ring system and became the fiber optic data multiplex system (FODMS). Installed or planned for installation in most of the Flight IIA ships of this class (DDGs 79-110), FODMS introduced fiber optics and packet switching. The Gigabit Ethernet data multiplex system (GEDMS), which is the next iteration beyond FODMS, is planned for DDG 111 and follow, as well as being a DMS replacement for DDGs 51-78. GEDMS upgrades the backbone network to a 1 Gb/s redundant Ethernet mesh, bringing enhanced multimedia capability to the ships. Intelligent space (iSpace) is a large scale mechatronics system. It is a multidisciplinary effort whose aim is to produce a network structure and components that are capable of integrating sensors, actuators, DSP, communication, and control algorithms in a manner that suits time-sensitive applications including real-time navigation and/or obstacle avoidance. There are many challenges that must be overcome in order to put such a distributed, heterogeneous system together. This paper deals with one of these issues, i.e. the adverse effect of network and processing delays on the system. Here a delay-resistant sensory motor module for navigating a differential drive unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) in a cluttered environment is suggested. The module consists of an early vision edge detection stage, a harmonic potential field (HPF) planner, a network based quadratic curve fitting controller and gain schedule middleware, (GSM). Though the different techniques used to implement the navigation system have been well-studied as independent modules, the contribution in this paper is the way all these different modules are integrated together for the first time to create an efficient structure for a network based integrated navigation system. The structure of this module and its components are described. Thorough experimental results along with performance assessment comparing the suggested structure to a previous implementation of iSpace are also provided

Micro-mobility has many protocols, which adopt hierarchical architectures and paging from cellular networks and employ them in mobile IP. In this paper the authors address three main issues of existing micro-mobility protocols e.g., inefficient registration for the first time when mobile node enters foreign network area, communication bottleneck, and single point of failure. As existing Micro-mobility protocols are centralized because all the communication and registration through a single point e.g., global foreign agent. The authors proposed a new micro-mobility scheme which is an efficient, scalable and fault tolerant solution. The authors distributed that workload on FAs. They include additional features behave differently in diverse situations

Groupcast communication is gaining momentum due to the increasing demands of bandwidth-intensive parallel computing and collaborations. Groupcast is a multipoint-to-multipoint communication pattern, where one or more member nodes in a group are allowed to send traffic with various rates to all other members within the group. Efficient implementation of groupcast requires in-group or cross-group traffic grooming. This paper studies the application of traffic grooming to support dynamic groupcast provisioning in WDM networks with ring and mesh topologies. The design issues such as routing, in-group and cross-group traffic grooming and traffic sub-grouping are addressed.

Security remains a major topic in today's networks. Especially in the mobile area there are many security issues that have not yet been satisfactorily addressed, let alone been solved. Most of the security mechanisms and techniques used in wired networks tend to rely upon a fixed network topology. For example, firewalls and intrusion detection systems are placed at central points of a network and configured with a model of the network's structure to control and analyse the data flows transferred for harmful content. If at all, adopting these measures for the mobile world is not easy due to its dynamically changing environments and the mobile device's resource constraints that do not allow demanding analyse tasks. In this paper, we present our work in progress of developing a system architecture for cooperative and self-protecting mobile devices. Our approach is based on the assumption that a mobile network can be protected by securing all participating devices or at least all honest participating devices. Thus, we no longer insist on a global view of the network but on several local views. To make these views as precise as possible and to avoid serious performance bottlenecks on a single device we propose a strategy for coupling trusted mobile devices together into a cooperating group

To support multimedia service in WSN (wireless sensor network), there are two important design issues: how to make efficient use of network bandwidth and how to increase the life time of nodes. It is known that an industry standard for WSN - ZigBee has been recently finalized for TEXT data transmission. However, it has many problems as far as multimedia services (grabbing audio/video data) are concerned. In this paper, we first introduce ZigBee-based WSN, then discuss its problems in supporting multimedia services, and finally propose our reference design that can overcome these problems. The design proposed includes the aspects of sensor node's hardware and software architecture, network configuration and data transmission. In the end of this paper, we present our implementation of a WSN using a ZigBee device to validate the feasibility of our design.

Survivable service provisioning design has emerged as one of the most important issues in communication networks in recent years. In this work, we study survivable service provisioning with shared protection under a scheduled traffic model in wavelength convertible WDM optical mesh networks. In this model, a set of demands is given, and the setup time and teardown time of a demand are known in advance. Based on different protection schemes used, this problem has been formulated as integer linear programs with different optimization objectives and constraints in our previous work [8, 9]. The problem is shown to be NP- hard. We therefore study time efficient approaches to approximating the optimal solution to the problem. Our proposed approach is based on an iterative survivable routing (ISR) scheme that utilizes a capacity provision matrix and processes demands sequentially using different demand scheduling policies. The objective is to minimize the total network resources (e.g., number of wavelength-links) used by working paths and protection paths of a given set of demands while 100% restorability is guaranteed against any single failure. The proposed algorithm is evaluated against solutions obtained by integer linear programming. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed ISR algorithm is extremely time efficient while achieving excellent performance in terms of total network resources used. The impact of demand scheduling policies on the ISR algorithm is also studied.

network intrusion detection and prevention systems (NIDS and NIPS) have to date focused on protecting external access links, or, when internally deployed, links between major enclaves in an enterprise. As previously argued, major threats (worms, insiders, and attackers with a toehold) come from inside the local network, rather than outside. Recently, two approaches have arisen to address this threat: ubiquitous deployment of end system monitors and custom hardware to replace switching infrastructure. This paper presents a third way: exploiting the VLAN capabilities of modern switches to enforce that all LAN communications must traverse and meet the approval of an intrusion detection monitor that operates separately from the switches. This architecture can realize two key benefits: (1) deployment and operation in today's enterprise networks without requiring replacement of existing network infrastructure, and (2) the use of highly flexible, commodity PCs for LAN monitoring, rather than algorithms embedded in difficult-to-reprogram custom hardware

Despite the advances in wireless, energy-constrained ad hoc networks, there are still many challenges due to the limited capabilities of the current hardware. Therefore, our aim is to develop a lightweight, yet powerful operating system (OS) for such networks. We reject the brute force method of provisioning all necessary OS services at each node of the system. Instead, in our approach, services provided by the OS organise autonomously to achieve an efficient distribution over the network. In order to enable the use of our OS in energy- and hardware-constrained networks, we argue that it is necessary that all layers of the system are designed to cooperate within a cross-layer approach. At the link layer, our contribution includes an emergent topology control protocol taking into account node and network properties enabling the division of roles between nodes. Further, we employ a combined link metric based on signal strength, success rate, and history to enable a more realistic link quality assessment and pheromone adjustments in routing. At the network layer, to avoid costly reorganisation after role changes incurred by topology control, we use a fuzzy distinction between nodes with different roles by adding a role-based component to the probabilistic next-hop selection function of ant colony routing. At the highest level of our approach, we propose a short- and a long-range migration method for OS service states, based solely on local information and autonomous decisions, to improve the overall quality of service, fairness, balance, predictability, and reduce communication overhead. In ns-2 simulations, we demonstrate improvements of quality of service of 80 % and load balancing of 200 to 400 %

In the GRID environment investigated in this work, each node of the network can be either a terminal host or a Web cache location. Objects, which can represent either a file or any other resource to be shared, are downloaded throughout the network among the nodes. For memory saving and for safety reasons, each object is composed of a number of portions and not all the portions are located within the same node, because no node should have the complete knowledge of each object. It is strongly recommendable because if a single node should be either accessed without authorization, information retrieved is not sufficient to detect the overall content. Concerning networking viewpoint, the following main issues will characterize the performance of object exchange: Position of the information, strategy to reach the information, algorithm to download information, capacity planning. The paper proposes a control architecture that considers the mentioned issues. The problem is modeled through a mathematical formulation and a specific cost function, which takes into account all the necessary details, is introduced for each controller as well as a minimization procedure.
