On developing the personal robot system presently, the internal architecture is every module those occupy separated functions are connected through heterogeneous network system. This module-based architecture supports specialization and division of labor at not only designing but also implementation, as an effect of this architecture, it can reduce developing times and costs for modules. Furthermore, because every module is connected among other modules through network systems, we can get easy integrations and synergy effect to apply advanced mutual functions by coworking some modules. In this architecture, one of the most important technologies is the network middleware that takes charge communications among each modules connected through heterogeneous networks systems. The network middleware acts as the human nerve system inside of personal robot system;it relays, transmits, and translates information appropriately between modules that are similar to human organizations. The network middleware supports various hardware platform, heterogeneous network systems (Ethernet, Wireless LAN, USB, IEEE 1394, CAN, CDMA-SMS, RS-232C). This paper discussed some mechanisms about our network middleware to intercommunication and routing among modules, methods for real-time data communication and fault-tolerant network service. There have designed and implemented a layered network middleware scheme, distributed routing management, network monitoring/notification technology on heterogeneous networks for these goals. The main theme is how to make routing information in our network middleware. Additionally, with this routing information table, we appended some features. Now we are designing, making a new version network middleware (we call 'OO M/W') that can support object-oriented operation, also are updating program sources itself for object-oriented architecture. The road vehicle communication system is an infrastructure network to be deployed along the roads for future intelligent transportation systems. Recently, in order to provide high bandwidth data traffic a radio over fiber based network at millimeter-wave bands has been proposed. In this network a control station is connected to functionally simple base stations via optical fibers. Due to millimeter-wave properties the cell size is very small;therefore, the system is characterized by small cell and high mobility. As a result, it is obvious that mobility management becomes very significant. In this paper we propose a medium access control scheme featuring fast handover and dynamic bandwidth allocation using the ability of centralized control of radio over fiber networks. © 2005 IEEE.

We consider reliable multicast in overlay networks where nodes have finite-size buffers and are subject to failures. We address issues of end-to-end reliability and throughput scalability in this framework. We propose a simple architecture which consists of using distinct point-to-point TCP connections between adjacent pairs of end-systems, together with a back-pressure control mechanism regulating the transfers of adjacent TCP connections, as well as a back-up buffering system handling node failures. This architecture, that we call the One-to-Many TCP Overlay, is a natural extension of TCP to the one-to-many case, in that it adapts the rate of the group communication to local congestion in a decentralized way via the window back-pressure mechanism. Using theoretical investigations, experimentations in the Internet, and large network simulations, we show that this architecture provides end-to-end reliability and can tolerate multiple simultaneous node failures, provided the backup buffers are sized appropriately. We also show that under random perturbations caused by cross traffic described in the paper, the throughput of this reliable group communication is always larger than a positive constant, that does not depend on the group size. This scalability result contrasts with known results about the non-scalability of IP-supported multicast for reliable group communication.

Chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and nonlinear effects are important issues on the physical layer of high-speed reconfigurable WDM optical fiber communication systems. For beyond 10 Gbit/s optical fiber transmission system, it is essential that chromatic dispersion and PMD be well managed by dispersion monitoring and compensation. One the other hand, dispersive and nonlinear effects in optical fiber systems can also be beneficial and has applications on pulse management, all-optical signal processing and network function, which will be essential for high bite-rate optical networks and replacing the expensive optical-electrical-optical (O/E/O) conversion. In this Ph.D. dissertation, we present a detailed research on dispersive and nonlinear effects in high-speed optical communication systems. We have demonstrated: (i) A novel technique for optically compensating the PMD-induced RF power fading that occurs in single-sideband (SSB) subcarrier-multiplexed systems. By aligning the polarization states of the optical carrier and the SSB, RF power fading due to all orders of PMD can be completely compensated. (ii) Chromatic-dispersion-insensitive PMD monitoring by using a narrowband FBG notch filter to recover the RF clock power for 10Gb/s NRZ data, and apply it as a control signal for PMD compensation. (iii) Chirp-free high-speed optical pulse generation with a repetition rate of 160 GHz (which is four times of the frequency of the electrical clock) using a phase modulator and polarization maintaining (PM) fiber. (iv) Polarization-insensitive all-optical wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing in dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) with a fiber Bragg grating and a Faraday rotator mirror. (v) Width-tunable optical RZ pulse train generation based on four-wave mixing in highly-nonlinear fiber. We present a complete architecture for a Video on Demand (VoD) system. Our proposal does not depend on the deployment of new network infrastructure in the network, and only relies on end-to-end communication between participating receivers and the sender to control the transmission. We employ a broadcasting schema to produce the video data to be sent to the receivers and a multicast congestion control algorithm to control the data throughput. As the broadcasting schema produces a constant bitrate stream and the network available bandwidth can vary with time, a rate adaptor is employed to adjust the transmitted data to what the network can admit. With the help of simulations we show how our proposal is able to degrade in a controlled manner providing an adequate quality to all receivers. It is also shown how the congestion control algorithm employed is able to guarantee the network stability.

optical layer capacity and unit cost improvements are basic to the rapid growth of IP networks. However, the new rapid reconfiguration and restoration capabilities of the optical layer have been sparingly utilized by IP network operators. This is consistent with the economics: the widely deployed optical layer architecture based on a "discrete" optical cross-connect (DOXC - one not integrated into the WDM) incurs heavy interface costs. In addition, there are architectural and control issues which are roadblocks to IP exploitation of rapid optical layer agility. In the first part of the paper, we describe a next generation all-optical architecture based on OXCs integrated with the WDM ("IOXCs"), and one instantiation of this architecture using a class of reconfigurable degree-N optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM). A new shared mesh restoration mechanism based on hot standbys is designed to overcome slow convergence and transient behaviors that are typical in all-optical networks. A series of economic comparisons are made on both a 120-node hypothetical national network and a smaller express backbone network to demonstrate the cost effectiveness of the new IOXC-based restoration in comparison to the IP layer restoration after some optical layer failure that results in one or more IP link failures. In the IP over optical architecture, the optical Layer can provide its IP clients rapid and efficient restoration for IP link failures that are due to some optical layer failure;however its inability to protect against router and router interface failures erodes its attractiveness. In the second part of the paper, we propose a joint IP/optical restoration mechanism to deal with this. It is suitable for IP offices with at least two backbone routers and an optical cross-connect. The OXC is used to re-terminate OC-48/OC-192 links from a failed backbone router to its mate. This paper explores the possibility to use a communication protocol other than HTTP under real-time auction applications in order to provide best-suited communication services. We specify a distributed communication architecture named AHS (Auction Handling System) based on the IRC architecture to support real-time auctions. While using the suitable services provided by IRC, this architecture provides auction applications with what we define as required communication services. We also specify a communication protocol, called BSA-protocol, to support interactions between auction participants and the auctioneer in a real-time auction process. This protocol uses the services provided by the IRC-client protocol as well as the channel facilities provided by the IRC architecture for group communications. We report on the encapsulation of this protocol within the IRC-client protocol and on the implementation of a prototype. The originality of this architecture lies in the fact that it both frees auction applications from communication issues and is independent from the auction protocol. © 2005 by International Federation for Information Processing.

In the environment that a lot of control equipments are connected discretely to offer those equipments additional flexibility, the network is required to be high speed, high reliability, and real-time responsibility. IEEE 1394(1-3) is preferable as the underlying data transport technology to meet such requirements. IEEE 1394 is an interface that can support Plug & Play between the control equipments without a host device, and guarantee real-time stream and data transmission. Using the technology as a backbone network is suitable for control network due to its characteristics. However, in the current IEEE 1394 specification, there are some issues: band shortage when a lot of devices are connected and the reliability decrease in the communication when the network topology changes. By using the new technology, the bus bridge for IEEE 1394, some of the problems can be handled. Nevertheless, some issues still remain even if the bus bridge technology is applied. In this paper, to address these issues, we have proposed the message-type service discovery method. The message-type service discovery can achieve the efficiency of forwarding communication by transmitting service information of the equipment as a set of messages. The proposed method enables to transmit service information of the equipments at high speed. Then, we actually measured the time required for the service discovery of the proposed method and discussed about the basic characteristics.

DBORN (Dual Bus optical Ring network) is a network architecture for wavelength division multiplexing metropolitan area networks. In DBORN, metro clients like enterprise networks are connected to the optical metro-ring by edge nodes which share the wavelength channels on the ring. In order to allow for a high-speed optical interface on the upstream wavelengths while avoiding active optical switching components, a carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) medium access control (MAC) protocol is realized. A Fairness protocol so-called TCARD was proposed [2] to tackle with the positional priority problem and provide guaranteed QoS. In this paper, the MAC protocol and the closely related transmitter interface are described first. Then, the performance of the MAC protocol is evaluated with respect to important system parameters like slotted/unslotted operation mode, burst size distribution and node position in terms of the mean waiting time as well as the node-to-hub delay. The performance of TCARD is inspected through simulations with respect to different parameter settings. Based on the original TCARD protocol in asynchronous unslotted operation mode, we also introduce slotted TCARD for the slotted operation mode and obtain outstanding performance gains. © 2005 IEEE.
