The use of an ad hoc mesh networkarchitecture solves some of the problems inherent to the wireless physical layer such as interferers, multi-path fading, shadowing, and loss of line-of-site. These effects severely limit the performance of current 802.11 wireless network implementations. This paper describes the use of Adaptive Link-layer Intelligence for Enhanced ad hoc networking. This technology enhances recognition and characterization of sources of wireless channel perturbations and predicts their effects on wireless link quality. Identifying and predicting channel problems at the link level improves dynamic route discovery, circumvents channel disruptions before they cause a link failure, and increases communications reliability and data rate. First Responders, Homeland Security, and Law Enforcement agencies operating in locations lacking infrastructure, such as Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) operations, can benefit from increased communications reliability in highly impaired channels that are typical in disaster response scenarios.

In this paper we investigate a hybrid network topology that is suitable for supporting interplanetary communications. We define an architecture comprised of a network of sensor nodes on a remote planetary surface, connected to a hybrid terrestrial network of wired and wireless LANs through a series of satellite relays. all the nodes in the network are IP-addressable and support public and symmetric key cryptography. The resulting network forms a hierarchical hybrid mesh that connects users on Earth to networks on or around a remote planetary surface. We describe the design of the network and present preliminary simulation results illustrating the network performance for various parameters. We also discuss how algorithms for user authentication, message integrity and data confidentiality can be incorporated in the network infrastructure for secure end-to-end communication.

In order to use WDM networks efficiently, a lightpath is dynamically established upon the arrival of a connection request. Dynamic routing is usually determined by conventional shortest path algorithm. Different link weight assignment results in different routing and network performance. In this work, we propose a new weight assignment scheme in which link weights are proportional to the exponential of link utilization. It is used to differentiate network in different traffic loads so as to arrive load balanced routing. Based on the assignments, one adaptive routing algorithm referred to as Exponential Weighted Shortest Feasible Path (EWSFP) is presented. Furthermore, to avoid consuming too much network resources by a path with large hop count, a new callcontrol algorithm named Random Early Blocking (REB) is proposed. By randomly rejecting calls with long routing path in heavy load, the whole network blocking probability can be greatly improved. Moreover, to balance the favor of short distance calls, a fair version of REB (called FREB) is presented in the paper. Extensive simulations are performed to evaluate the performance among different schemes. Compared to well-known shortest feasible path routing and weighted feasible shortest path routing, EWSFP achieves lowest call blocking probability. In cooperation with REB, all of the three adaptive routing approaches can significantly improve their performance. Among them the EWSCP+REB scheme outperforms all of the others. Simulation results also reveal that the FREB can obtain fairness among calls with different distances by only sacrificing a little blocking performance.

As the Army transforms into the Future Force, particular attention must be paid to operations in Complex and Urban Terrain. Our adversaries increasingly draw us into operations in the urban environment and one can presume that this trend will continue in future battles. In order to ensure that the United States Army maintains battlefield dominance, the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) is developing technology to equip our soldiers for the urban operations of the future. Sophisticated soldier borne systems will extend sensing to the individual soldier, and correspondingly, allow the soldier to establish an accurate picture of their surrounding environment utilizing information from local and remote assets. Robotic platforms will be an integral part of the future combat team. These platforms will augment the team with remote sensing modalities, task execution capabilities, and enhanced communicationsystems. To effectively utilize the products provided by each of these systems, collected data must be exchanged in real time to all affected entities. Therefore, the Army Research Laboratory is also developing the technology that will be required to support high bandwidth mobile communication in urban environments. This technology incorporates robotic systems that will allow connectivity in areas unreachable by traditional systems. This paper will address some of the issues of providing wireless connectivity in complex and urban terrain. It will further discuss approaches developed by the Army Research Laboratory to integrate communications capabilities into soldier and robotic systems and provide seamless connectivity between the elements of a combat team, and higher echelons.

Multicasting at the IP layer has not been adopted due to a combination of technical and economic issues. This has led to many recent efforts to focus on overlay multicast in which end systems perform all multicast communication functionalities instead of IP routers. In this paper, we propose a new proxy-based architecture of overlay multicast, which is called Overlay Multicast Service network (OMSN). Different from the previous works, OMSN adopts both DHT-based P2P and tree-first routing protocols, that is, the P2P protocol for system management and the tree-first protocol for data distribution respectively. Thus, the system can not only keep high scalability, but also provide high effective QoS routing. In addition, using an XML-based mechanism of service customization, OMSN can deliver different formats of multimedia streams to clients with different QoS requirements. A prototype of OMSN is also implemented. Our initial experience indicates that the prototype can meet the system goal of providing a scalable, effective and adaptable multicast service platform.

Recently, motivated by users demands for higher mobility and bandwidth, there are active researches on 4G systems. The requirements of 4G systems are all-IP based networks with cellular architecture and IP mobility supports to users. In this network, the L2 handoff scheme should be designed carefully and consider the L3 handoff scheme to reduce the handoff latency. The L2 and L3 handoff schemes in current wireless networks are performed separately, keeping the layer independence, which results in longer handoff latency. In this paper, we analyze handoff schemes of current wireless networks and design the handoff scheme for a 4G system including a handoff detection method. An integration method of the FMIPv6 protocol with the proposed L2 handoff scheme is also proposed, which can reduce the handoff latency and the number of control messages exchanged between the MN and the network.
