There is a great deal of benefits for process plants to adopt the Internet to control systems. This contribution develops the systematic design methods for the design of remote monitoring and control over the Internet. In this paper, five essential design issues that arise from Web-related features of Internet-based remote control have been investigated: communication latency, network communication architecture, optimal control structure, Web-based user interface, and security aspects. Uniquely, novel network communication architecture and optimal control structure with time-delay compensator are implemented to deal with dynamic delays caused by the Internet traffic. A water tank control systems is used to demonstrate our design objective. The experimental results show that remote control systems over the Internet for the water tank can achieve ideal dynamic performance even in the presence of some Internet traffic delay if properly designed.

Fly-by-light has been a research and development area for the last 15 years, and much progress has been made in many areas involving the components technologies. The next phase of developments in fly-by-light involves systems and architectural issues together with parameters that requires integration of such components in the next generation avionics and fly-by-light systems. Such deployments of optical networking technology for all communications, command, and control functions within an aircraft are compelling. Moreover, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is particularly useful for supporting diverse applications in a systematic and comprehensive manner. This paper describes a basic WDM architecture utilizing: 1) passive optical coupling for distributed signal collection (multiplexing), 2) passive optical splitting for signal distribution and separation (demultiplexing), and 3) centralized processing of information bearing signals utilizing multi-processors for demanding applications or multiprogrammed computers for less demanding functions. Standardized WDM interfaces on generic processor cards in the centralized locations support a variety of network structures. Key considerations in the chosen architecture are: 1) built-in performance monitoring, 2) automatic protection switching for fault tolerance, 3) accommodation of existing applications, and 4) extensibility to future, unknown applications.

As the future 4G networks grow and new services emerge, new intelligent, informative way of visualization and managing the network and service states are required. In this paper a Real-Time 4G System and network State based Visualization tool is presented. Current tele-network management tools and methods have lived through the years quite unchanged because there has not been any need for Real-Time type management system except on the Fault Management side that has been managed by typical fall log listing based inherited form the teletype age. There has actually been only one service, Circuit Switched calls, in the old POTS networks that could have been managed by simple Erlang based mathematics and ruling. Future 4G networks and services are managed totally different basis as they are Packet Switched and the traffic is based on IP/TCP and IP/UDP protocols in the cellular Core network and in the future Radio Access networks are moving also towards IP based solutions. From the management point of view there are many similarities with the Internet but also many exceptions caused by the different control, call and charging architecture that Internet is almost totally lacking at the moment. To support the fast growing demand for transmission capacity, optical label switching technology (OLS) seems to be an attractive candidate because it allows fast switching capability. In this paper, we propose an OLS ring network built on a novel node architecture allowing better QoS provision. We introduce a packet segmentation approach allowing a prioritized fiber delay line (FDL) buffering technique. We also develop a theoretical model and a simulation for evaluating the proposed network performance using a conservation law and a queuing network model.

Metro substation automation system (MSAS) manages many intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) and performs online control, data acquisition, information retrieving and communication with remote control center (CC). A MSAS based real-time embedded system is designed in this paper. It consists of station management level, network communication level and field level. In network communication level an embedded real-time PC-104 system with 2 WMbps fiber-Ethernet ports is employed as network communication device (NCD). NCDs provide different field-bus interfaces to IEDs. In MSAS many policies have been adopted to optimize its real-time response ability, reliability and flexibility. Firstly, optical fiber media is used for Ethernet connection. Secondly, no matter network-bridge PC or embedded PC-104 system adopt real-time operating system QNX. Thirdly, publish-subscribe architecture instead of client-server is adopted to lower the LAN load. Fourthly, two data queues owning different transfer priority and QoS policy are separately established for control & status data and analog data. At last, the high-precision time synchronization in MSAS is realized through network time protocol (NTP)

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are the products which integrate sensor techniques, embedded techniques, distributed. information processing and communication techniques. The appearance of the wireless sensor network is a revolution in information sensing and detection. Recently, both academia and industry have shown great interest in sensor networks. The paper introduces the architecture of the wireless sensor network and WSN features. It then studies recent routing protocols for wireless sensor networks and presents a variety of classifications of them; it also contrasts and compares representative routing protocols. Several future open issues of the wireless sensor networks are put forward.

Packet switched cellular networks offer significant cost and capacity utilization benefits for machine to machine (M2M) communications. However, the current cellular systems facilitate that communications must be initiated by the mobile station, as the architecture lacks needed monitoring and controlling functions. This study presents an architecture that offers an operator based solution for the management of M2M communications in an operator network. The management interface of this system is implemented by using the SIP protocol and its messaging and presence extensions. The prototype implementation is tested and found to be functional but limited in terms of scalability and denial of service vulnerability. Suggestions are presented in order to rectify these issues

Global information grid (GIG) is becoming a reality with emerging state-of-the-art communication system infrastructure. In this paper, we describe issues facing both global and tactical network managers. We also propose a model for developing a global network management architecture. The main elements of our proposed model include network management (NM) concept of operations (CONOPS), requirement space, technical reference architecture, reference design, and implementation/development framework. We further describe the key areas that an integrated NM CONOPS must address.

A CORBA-compliant object request broker (ORB) can facilitate data communication between dissimilar hardware, dissimilar operating systems, and modules written in different languages. Thus, in our proposal all control and management communication occurs within the context of the ORB. Our idea is based on a conception of a free architecture as a CORBA-based middleware for distributed embedded systems built on the CAN bus that realize a virtual switching architecture. This platform has to connect different physical network types. Thus we propose a solution to make it to behave as a router or a switcher. In our proposed framework we will use an ORB that may be conform to the forthcoming Real-time CORBA standards to be embedded in a network switch. Our target switch control environment includes support for virtual switching interface (VSI) which is a protocol that allows multiple independent signalling processors to interact with a switch control processor. The scope of this paper is to conceive an application that controls a such switch using the VSI messaging protocol within the context of embedded ORB over a free distributed and real-time embedded (DRE) architecture built on the CAN bus.
