The wireless industry is undergoing a transition. We see the evolution from cellular 2G to 3G standards, the migration from circuit to packet applications, and the procession of voice to data. We also see the industry incorporating new wireless access technologies such as WiFi and WiMAX. all of this is occurring in a market place where voice subscriber penetration levels in many parts of the world are saturating and there is incredible pressure to reduce network capital and operating costs. These conditions present significant technology challenges to increase customer demand and further increase network capacity to lower network costs. In this talk we will review the market drivers and applications that will drive the next-generation services. We note that in response to these the network architecture will migrate to having more control at the edge with substantially more direct base station to base station communication. We will then present several technologies that address these issues.

The complexity of today's data communication networks necessitates complete, realistic and sophisticated testing grounds for verifying and validating their functionality. network testing grounds are restricted to laboratories and environments isolated from real life scenarios. Testing in production and commercial networks is typically forbidden since they present a high degree of risk factors for service availability. Additionally, the majority of today's communication network testbeds lack the scale and flexibility needed to properly represent a true networking environment. Before deploying live networks there is a need to have a network testing environment scalable and flexible enough where issues such as: network design, vendor interoperability, endurance, multiprotocol layer interconnectivity, a vendor's specific implementations of standards and network design viability have been verified to meet the requirements. In this paper a design and implementation of a next generation network is described, where both testing and production traffic coexist. NCIT*net 2 is an optical transmission network supporting end-to-end services over technologies such as Ethernet, SONET, MPLS and DWDM. The paper also discusses key technology aspects related to the functionality of equipment and network from a service point of view. These include the physical layer and network operation, as well as architecture and control. The testbed network is used for the deployment of networking services over the above technologies in order to verify service implementation, provisioning and assurance of quality of service requirements. This network also allows testing and evaluating systems, subsystems and components from different vendors in various interconnections. The paper goes further to describe, as an example, the tests designed and implemented for the analysis of MPLS based services over next generation networks.

High-performance optical communication networks require stable switches to rapidly redirect a light beam from one port, or fiber, to another without converting the optical signal into an electrical signal. Micro-electromechanical (MEMS) optical switches are miniature devices that use tiny mirrors to alter the path of light. These switches enable all-optical capability, are small and compact, and cheap to fabricate. However, many torsion mirror optical switches are activated by electrostatic actuators that exhibit a pull-in phenomena which greatly effects system stability. The pull-in phenomena occurs when the gap between the electrodes in the actuator is reduced to less than two thirds of the original value thereby causing an uncontrolled contraction between the two sides the capacitor. This paper describes how a backpropagation neural network can be used to control an electrostatically actuated optical switch without using stiff suspension systems or mechanical stops. The two-layer network is applied to both single input and dual input MEMS torsion mirror optical switches. Simulation studies are presented to demonstrate how the proposed scheme allows the switching mechanism to operate in a stable range and avoid the effect of pull-in phenomena

Given all the plans to use slightly modified IP network architectures as a basis for critical communications infrastructures such as network centric warfare (NCW), joint tactical radio (JTRS), ForceNet, future combat systems (FCS), the global information grid (GIG), the warfighter information network tactical (WIN-T), and many other high profile, life-critical networks, the inherent weaknesses of IP networking must be examined. Major performance, audit-ability, and security shortcomings are intrinsic to the existing IP network architecture. These shortcomings represent inherent fundamental limitations of the IP architecture. These limitations cannot be overcome without a shift in the network paradigm. For this reason cognitive networks were designed. The software programmable intelligent network (SPIN), a cognitive network, takes the best of Internet protocol (IP), the public switched telephone network (PSTN), the Internet, cellular, and ad-hoc architectures and combines selected fundamental attributes into one network architecture. With communication of network control and state information out-of-band/off-channel, software elements can securely affect the operation of the network in near-hard-real-time. Predictive and proactive information can be "uploaded" into the network elements to yield an infrastructure that implements responses to changing conditions tempered by "situational awareness." This "best of breed" convergent architecture is incrementally deployable, backward compatible, more efficient, and has inherently lower deployment and operational costs

This paper describes a micro grid management system developed using agent based technologies and its application to the effective management of generation and storage devices connected to a LV network forming a micro grid. The micro grid is defined as a set of generation, storage and load systems electrically connected and complemented by a communication system to enable control actions and follow up surveillance. The effectiveness of the proposed architecture has been tested on laboratory facilities under different micro grid configurations. The performance and scalability issues related to the agent framework have also been considered and verified

We consider reliable multicast in overlay networks where nodes have finite-size buffers and are subject to failures. We address issues of end-to-end reliability and throughput scalability in this framework. We propose a simple architecture which consists of using distinct point-to-point TCP connections between adjacent pairs of end-systems, together with a back-pressure control mechanism regulating the transfers of adjacent TCP connections, as well as a back-up buffering system handling node failures. This architecture, that we call the one-to-many TCP overlay, is a natural extension of TCP to the one-to-many case, in that it adapts the rate of the group communication to local congestion in a decentralized way via the window back-pressure mechanism. Using theoretical investigations, experimentations in the Internet, and large network simulations, we show that this architecture provides end-to-end reliability and can tolerate multiple simultaneous node failures, provided the backup buffers are sized appropriately. We also show that under random perturbations caused by cross traffic described in the paper, the throughput of this reliable group communication is always larger than a positive constant, that does not depend on the group size. This scalability result contrasts with known results about the non-scalability of IP-supported multicast for reliable group communication.

Grid computing provides a flexible, secure, sharing of resources among dynamic collections of individuals, institutions, and resources. optical burst switching (OBS) is one of the most promising new optical transport paradigms for efficiently transporting data over an all-optical network. In this paper, we discuss several mechanisms for deploying a reliable OBS network using a range of loss minimization and loss recovery mechanisms. We also propose two new loss recovery mechanisms for deploying a reliable OBS network, namely, forward error correction and composite burst assembly. Our simulation shows that the two proposed mechanisms significantly reduce the loss experienced by loss-sensitive connection-oriented traffic through an OBS network. We have also shown how the reduction of loss leads to increased throughput of TCP-over-OBS network. We also propose a comprehensive OBS service architecture, and provide guidelines for implementing a reliable connection-oriented photonic transmission control protocol (PTCP) over OBS-based grid networks

We present a 40 Gb/s asynchronous self-routing network and node architecture that exploits bit and packet level optical signal processing to perform synchronization, forwarding and switching. optical packets are self-routed on a hop-by-hop basis through the network by using stacked optical tags, each representing a specific optical node. Each tag contains control signals for configuring the switching matrix and forwarding each packet to the appropriate outgoing link and onto the next hop. Physical layer simulations are performed, modeling each optical sub-system of the node showing acceptable signal quality and bit error rates. Resource reservation-based signaling algorithms are theoretically modeled for the control plane capable of providing high performance in terms of blocking probability and holding time

Inter-vehicle communication, an important component of intelligent transportation system, performs crucial functions in collision avoidance, road-hazard notification, and coordinated driving system. An inter-vehicle communication network is an instantiation of a mobile ad hoc network, which is characterized by multi-hop wireless communications among mobile nodes without any centralized control infrastructure. However, automotive ad hoc networks behaves in fundamentally different ways than the models that predominate mobile ad hoc network research. Driver behavior, constraints on mobility and high speeds create unique characteristics in such networks. They are characterized by rapid but somewhat predictable topology changes, with frequent fragmentation, a small effective network diameter, and redundancy that is limited temporally and functionally. The motivation of this research is to propose an effective approach to topology management under these constraints. Apparently flat structure is not suited to vehicular ad hoc networks since it is impossible for every node to acquire the global topology information. all participating nodes must be organized hierarchically so that only local information is required to exchange and global information is hidden for single node. Clustering is an important technique to implement hierarchical structure. Several heuristic clustering techniques have been proposed to choose cluster heads in an ad hoc network. These are lowest-ID, highest-degree and node-weight heuristics. However they cannot be deployed directly in ad hoc vehicular networks since their design objectives are not for highly mobility vehicular networks. The metrics used in these proposals are frequently changed. The end-to-end provisioning delay will be a crucial metric for service level agreements because rapid, dynamic service provisioning is expected to be the killer application for the success of future optical networks. In this paper we study analytically and assess experimentally, in an ASON/GMPLS test bed, the delays experienced by all the network elements and components involved in the provisioning of soft-permanent connections. This is done according to an approach for designing the management-control architecture which is compliant with the ITU-T.
