The next generation global communication network infrastructure is designed to be all IP based, supporting various heterogeneous core and access technologies for broadband and mobile user applications. In this paper, we discuss the trends of broadband satellite communication networks to meet the emerging aeronautical and fast train applications, and mobile users, in providing ubiquitous global coverage. Mobile satellite systems will be fully integrated with wireless networks and terrestrial segments. The technical challenges for future broadband satellite systems will be to insure seamless integration between satellite and wireless systems and without compromising quality of service (QoS). We discuss briefly the technical challenges and possible solutions, including a QoS reference model, traffic management, dynamic bandwidth allocation, cross-layer protocol design, satellite TCP, mobility management, satellite IP security, internetworking and standardization issues to realize heterogeneous networks.

The current Department of Defense (DoD) satellite communications architecture relies heavily on point-to-point, circuit-based communications technology, which is an inherently inefficient use of bandwidth resources. The current Global War on Terror (GWOT) and Operations Iraqi (OIF) and Enduring Freedom (OEF) demand a more efficient and scalable infrastructure to support warfighter transformation. To meet these emerging requirements, the Defense Information systems Agency (DISA) DoD teleport program office (TPO) is building an initial transformational net-centric architecture by the end of Fiscal Year (FY) 2005 with significant upgrades starling in FY 2006. The DoD teleport system provides the deployed warfighter access to the global information grid (GIG) by linking the space and ground segments through a worldwide, pre-positioned military and commercial satellite communications infrastructure. Through multiple radio frequency (RF) media (military and commercial bands), teleport provides inter-theater reach-back into the defense information systems network (DISN) and service command, control, communications, computer, and intelligence (C4I) systems, as well as intra-theater communications support for tactical users. These interfaces enable the seamless, interoperable, and secure transport of command and control (C2), intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), and mission critical information supporting warfighter global operations. The TPO net-centric teleport architecture converges all the voice, video, and data requirements into a single Internet protocol (IP)-based transport system, consisting of: satellite IP-based networking modems, a "black" convergence router suite, and a voice over IP (VoIP) gateway for unclassified voice. This architecture, combined with the global network operations (NetOps) construct, will enable significant bandwidth efficiencies for greater reach-hack and enhanced warfighting capabilities through dynamic bandwidth allocation requ

For the teleoperation of a robot over the IP network, we must deal with the uncertain time-delay because it reduces the stability of the teleoperation significantly. The time-delay is produced by the variable network structure and its imbalanced distributed flows. In this paper, we first analyze the time-delay of Internet and establish a model based on the dynamic IP network traffic characteristics, and then bring forward a real-time remote control architecture based on Smith predictor principle and network delay regulator method. In order to overcome the predicted time-delay errors, we present an online adaptive time-delay parameter control scheme. These methods are validated through experiments and simulations, and results of them are also given and explained. all these results show that the proposed model and the enhanced Smith Predictor with adaptive time-delay control are desirable to the improvement of Internet-based teleoperation systems

In this paper we investigate a hybrid network topology that is suitable for supporting interplanetary' communications. We define an architecture comprised of a network of sensor nodes on a remote planetary surface, connected to a hybrid terrestrial network of wired and wireless LANs through a series of satellite relays. all the nodes in the network are IP-addressable and support public and symmetric key cryptography. The resulting network forms a hierarchical hybrid mesh that connects users on Earth to networks on or around a remote planetary surface. We describe the design of the network and present preliminary simulation results illustrating the network performance for various parameters. We also discuss how algorithms for user authentication, message integrity and data confidentiality can be incorporated in the network infrastructure for secure end-to-end communication

Successful system architecture design requires an understanding of the needs and requirements of a wide range of stakeholders covering the complete system architecture-related life cycle. Communicating with various stakeholders is a highly delicate task and may cause misunderstandings during the translation of functional needs into architectural properties. We developed the architecture Evaluation Framework (AEF) to improve the design of telecommunication network elements architecture. The various uses of AEF include checking the appropriateness of architecture in relation to business drivers, suitability of external components (COTS, open source), evaluating internal coherence of a product family, or prioritizing development efforts. Furthermore, the AEF is scalable in terms of process phases and framework comprehensiveness. In this paper, we discuss the creation and use of the AEF. The important architectural issues gathered from product life cycle stakeholders form a framework, a hierarchy of architectural factors. We use a bottom-up approach in building the hierarchy. Thus, the selected factors reflect the terminology used among the stakeholders. Based on our experiences, we claim that such a framework is easy to learn and helps to communicate architectural preferences. These benefits are achieved by using the internal origin, familiar factors, and embedded support for all definitions used in the factor hierarchy.

The Stream control Transmission Protocol has recently been standardized as a new transport layer protocol in the IP protocol suite. SCTP is based on the TCP protocol, but incorporates a number of advanced and unique features that are not available in TCP. Although the suitability of TCP over satellite networks has been widely studied, the suitability of SCTP over satellite networks remains to be evaluated. The objective of this article is to investigate the suitability of SCTP for data communications over satellite networks. We focus on the advanced features of SCTP that enhance its performance in satellite networks. Finally, we provide recommendations on the use of SCTP over satellite networks. © 2005 IEEE.

Our work aims to address some challenging security issues in an important information infrastructure - large-scale and low-energy wireless actuator and sensor networks (WASN). Instead of purely focusing on security research itself as in most of the current literature, we argue that WASNs have specific network constraints and data transmission requirements compared to general ad hoc networks and other wireless/wired networks. We propose to seamlessly integrate WASN security with a promising routing architecture that proves to be scalable and energy-efficient. To protect from active attacks in mobile sensor networks, we propose two-level re-keying/re-routing schemes that can not only adapt to a dynamic network topology but also securely update keys for each data transmission session. Moreover, due to the importance of secure in-networking processing such as data aggregation in WASNs, we define a multiple-key management scheme closely related to the proposed tree-ripple-zone (TRZ) routing architecture.

The OCDMA techniques have been studied for various networking applications including LAN, access networks and all-optical GMPLS-based packet switching. Unlike RF-CDMA, the OCDMA codes need to have minimal cross-correlation properties due to the IM/DD nature of the data links. In this paper, we describe the design of multi-user high-speed networks with wavelength/time matrix code, using a commercial optical systems simulator, OptSim trade . We also show the penalties due to MAI. We extend our analyses to ASE-limited and thermal noise-limited cases corresponding to the optically amplified and un-amplified network links. We also discuss factors affecting data security and present strategies to enhance a network's resilience to malicious intrusions

UMTS, the successor of GSM, is evolving toward a future wireless all-IP network. In this paper we present how it supports real-time IP multimedia services, as these services are expected to drive the adoption of wireless all-IP networks. The scheme of real time streaming video is one of the newcomers in wireless data communication and in particular in UMTS, raising a number of novel requirements in both telecommunication and data communication systems. This scheme applies when the mobile user is experiencing real time multimedia content. In this paper, we describe the design and the implementation of a decision feedback scheme, which is based on real time protocols and it is used for streaming video over UMTS transport channels. The decision feedback scheme uses a friendly, to the mobile users, congestion control mechanism to control the transmission rate of the real time video sequence. Furthermore, we evaluate this mechanism through a number of experiments. During these experiments we demonstrate the friendly behavior of the decision feedback scheme to TCP and UDP data streams that coexist in the same channel with the video sequence.

Medium access control (MAC) is one of the most crucial issues in Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs). To prevent data of different optical network units (ONUs) from collision in the upstream direction, an EPON system must employ a MAC mechanism to arbitrate access to the shared upstream channel and at the same time efficiently share the bandwidth of the upstream channel among all ONUs. In this paper, we present an adaptive MAC polling protocol for an EPON system. This polling protocol uses an adaptive scheduling algorithm called the earliest-packet-first (EPF) algorithm that schedules the transmission order of different ONUs based on the arrival time of the first packet waiting in the queue of each ONU and always schedules the ONU with the earliest packet to transmit first in each polling. The purpose is to reduce the packet delay in the system and thus provide better quality of service for end users.
