We design a self-stabilizing communication protocol in a sensor network, based on the directed diffusion method [1]. A request for data from an initiator node is broadcast in the network, and the positive answers from the sensors are forwarded back to the initiator (following a Shortest-Path- Tree (SPT) construction rooted at the initiator.) The sensor nodes, starting from an arbitrary state and following our protocol, establish reliable communication in the network in a finite number of steps. Any number of initiators and any number of different requests at a time per initiator are allowed, but we limit the number of entries in the interest cache as the memory of a sensor node is limited.

In our previous studies, we have proposed diffusion-type flow control for high-speed networks. The reason for proposing this type of control is that decision-making at each node leads to high performance of the whole network although each individual node handles its local traffic flow only on the basis of the information it is aware of from its immediately adjacent nodes. Our control method exhibits the desired stability and adaptability of network performance even when the network has an heterogeneous configuration and the capacity of links is dynamically changed. However, in order to make a comparison with other flow control methods under the same conditions, our evaluation used a closed network model, in which the number of packets was unchanged. This paper investigates the performance of our flow control method using an open network model, in order to show that our flow control method is still effective in more realistic networks. We identify the key issues associated with our flow control in an open network model, and demonstrate a solution.

Using a simulation model for a benchmark VoIP access architecture, we investigate the performance issues associated with mixing real-time voice and congestion-sensitive data traffic. Arbitration of shared facility is accomplished via First Come First Serve (FCFS), Strictly Priority (SP), and Weighted Fair Queuing (WFQ) disciplines. The performance metrics used are facility utilization, transmission delay, queuing delay and packet loss. Engineering rules for sizing the network are provided. More specifically, our results indicate that proper engineering of the queue size under the SP discipline can prevent any packet loss of voice traffic; proper setting the weights of the WFQ scheduler can control the delay for voice traffic; and increasing the queuing delay of the WFQ scheduler can improve the packet loss rate of data traffic.

We discuss the mobile Internet access in the context of project BAS (business as usual), which plans to develop a system that connects all the public service buses as nodes in an ad hoc network and use this network to provide a wide range of services that are perceived to be useful to commuters. In our system, the heterogeneous communication between wireless bus ad hoc network and Internet is established with the installation of specific access routers along the road, which serves as gateways between these two types of networks. However, the integration of wireless bus ad hoc network with the Internet faces many challenges, such as gateway discovery, mobility management and routing. We propose an architecture that addresses these issues. Additionally, this architecture allows passengers to access the Internet with their mobile devices via this bus ad hoc network, and possibly reducing their access and usage costs.

Recently, middleware has started playing an important role in embedded devices and applications. The recent advances in wireless communication and micro system technology have evolved the construction of sensor networks for sensing environmental parameters, processors, wireless communication capabilities, and autonomous power supplies in tiny devices in large quantities at low cost. Large and dense networks of these devices can then be deployed discreetly in the physical environment in order to observe a wide variety of realworld phenomena. With the continuous growth of sensor networks, monitoring has become an important problem. In this paper, we present a middleware service for monitoring sensor networks and applications with an illustrative example.

communications play an important role in multirobot systems. Since the advent of high-performance wireless local area network (WLAN) at relatively low cost, its use for wireless communication among multirobot has become a practical proposition. However, in a large system with many robots, it becomes difficult for all of robots to exchange information at a time because of their limited communication capacities. In this case, an efficient and reliable communication network is wanted. This paper presents some wireless communication schemes and their applications. Broad samplings of the research that is currently ongoing in the field of multirobot communication system are provided. Finally, a conclusion is given by identifying several additional open research issues in this field

Department of Defense (DoD) communications requirements are moving rapidly towards an all Internet protocol (IP) infrastructure in support of network-centric communications architectures which will provide flexibility and an array of services to the warfighter. DoD has developed the transformational communications architecture (TCA) which defines an integrated approach to delivering IP based services utilizing near term satellites such as the wideband gapfiller system ( WCS) and far term capabilities provided by the transformational satellite (TSAT). An architectural view is presented, providing IP based services over transponded satellites in support of the transformation of DoD communications networks. The impact on current transponded satellite communications (SATCOM) systems is considered and recommendations are proposed to enhance the control and management of transponded networks supporting transformational operational capabilities.

Summary form only given. Telecommunications industry is facing two dominant trends. First, broadband access in the form of cable, fiber to home and WiMAX (IEEE 802.16) is providing a high-bandwidth pipe to people's home and to small-medium businesses. Second, there is a fundamental shift from circuit-switched networks to packet-switched networks. The implication of broadband access is an opportunity for providing richer multimedia applications and services. Applications such as multimedia streaming require high bandwidth; whereas applications such as voice over IP (VoIP), push-to-talk (PTT), online gaming require low delay/jitter; yet applications like video conferencing require both high bandwidth and low delay/jitter. QoS, therefore, means low latency, low delay/jitter, low loss, adequate bandwidth and above all, good end-user experience. However, all the metrics do not necessarily apply to all applications and hence it's a challenge for the service provider to build an infrastructure that can provide end-to-end QoS for applications with variety of QoS needs. The second trend towards converged networks and services implies the need for a unified service architecture that is independent of the access network. The unified service architecture needs a SIP-based signaling and control infrastructure to support QoS-control on a per-user (or per-class-of-users) and per-application or (per-class-of-applications) basis. While basic mechanisms are provided by IETF protocols, a carrier grade implementation of such QoS control requires a more robust and systematic design of the service infrastructure. Unified signaling plane for QoS control is not enough to guarantee QoS of multimedia services. There needs to be equivalent carrier-grade support for the bearer plane as well. DiffServ-aware MPLS traffic engineering is fulfilling that need. The 3GPP selected the session initiation protocol (SIP) for the IP core network multimedia subsystem (IMS), enabling multimedia session control in 3GPP wireless networks. However, the IMS is restricted to the supported users as defined by 3GPP. We propose in this paper to extend the supported accesses (3GPP and WLAN) to other types of accesses (xDSL, CATV). The possibility to offer evolved SIP services through IMS to non3GPP access based users, leverages the multimedia services provided by operators. Such interworking introduces hence new gateways to the edge interfaces of networks: to allow user access and billing, to determine traffic path or simply transfer the policies between networks. The paper focuses on these required gateways, their role in the architecture and in the SIP messages flow. We also look at the new issues that rise with the interconnection of 3GPP network with different networks.

What, in fact, is peer-to-peer (P2P)? Is it a set of protocols, an IT architecture, a design philosophy stressing decentralization, a business model? In its current form it encompasses all of these attributes. Reduced to a common denominator the term P2P refers to technology which enables two or more peers to collaborate spontaneously in a network of equals (peers) by using appropriate information and communication systems without the necessity for central coordination. It appears profitable to build information systems based on P2P architectures. However, the extent to which companies can take advantage of P2P is under debate. Will decentralized control be able to cope with challenges regarding network control, security, interoperability, meta data, and cost sharing? This minitrack features five papers that address the wide range of P2P research topics.
