We propose a novel multicast communications model, called RingNet, which is a combination of logical trees and logical rings for multicast communications. Based on RingNet, we propose a reliable totally-ordered group multicast protocol for mobile Internet. The network entities in the top logical ring of the RingNet hierarchy are responsible for totally-ordering messages. all the network entities in all the logical rings are responsible for reliably transmitting multicast messages to their next nodes, children nodes, or their attaching mobile hosts, even in handoffs. The proposed protocol runs in a parallel and distributed way in the sense that each network entity only maintains information about its possible neighbors, and independently decides whether, when, and where to order, forward, and deliver multicast messages. We prove that, compared with the multicast protocol without ordering requirement, our totally-ordered multicast protocol provides the same multicast throughput, only with limited overhead on message latency and buffer sizes.

In this paper, we propose a Dynamic Shared-Path Protection (DSPP) algorithm for protecting the multi-link failures of the dual-risk breakdowns in WDM mesh networks. DSPP can dynamically adjust the link-cost according to the current state of the network and searches a primary path and two SRLG-disjoint backup paths for each connection request, and all paths are the minimum cost. Under dynamic traffic with different load, the performances of DSPP have been investigated via simulations. The results show that DSPP not only can completely protect the multi-link failures of the dual-risk breakdowns but also can make the tradeoffs between the resource utilization ratio (or blocking ratio) and the protection-switching time.

In ubiquitous computing environments, mobile applications reside in devices that move arbitrarily and communicate with each other through wireless means. They are presented with fast changing situations, such as the location variation, service availability change, and resource fluctuation. Under these circumstances, situation-awareness is a desirable feature for mobile applications. Being situation-aware, a mobile application is capable of detecting situation changes and responding to it on-the-fly without bothering the user all the times. This paper presents an approach to enhancing mobile applications with situation-aware capabilities using middleware service.

In recent years the idea of access network has changed radically, and the diffusion of wireless technologies, and especially IEEE 802.11 compliant devices, has made wireless connections increasing popular. Despite the great success of the IEEE 802.11 standard, several problems concerning security, power consumption and quality of service of wireless LANs remain partially unsolved. The QoS issue is especially relevant for multimedia communications, generally needing performance guarantees from the network infrastructure to fulfill application requirements. In this paper we analyze the behavior of the Frame Dropping (FD) mechanism, a QoS mechanism for multimedia communications using simulations, and compare it with that of another well assessed mechanism: Distributed Fair Scheduling (DFS). Simulation results show that, though DFS achieve a better channel utilization, FD behavior is comparable with that of DFS under all the main performance indices, and it exhibits effective traffic differentiation capabilities.

Fieldbuses are special purpose local area networks (LAN) used to connect all kinds of devices in a factory. The paper discusses security in fieldbuses, and presents a security architecture, such as WorldFIP (World Factory Instrumentation Protocol), for centralized fieldbuses. The discussion takes into account, on one hand, the security services defined by the OSI security architecture, and, on the other hand, the security mechanisms defined by WorldFIP. The discussion shows that there are two critical points for attacking this network: the bus arbitrator and the bus. The paper presents the specification, using the specification and description language (SDL), of a security architecture for WorldFIP based on the RC4 algorithm, which is a lightweight cryptographic stream cipher.

There are many situations in which we need to incorporate real-time constraints in broadcasting systems for mobile environments. In this paper, we study broadcast scheduling strategies for pull-based broadcast with timing constraints in the form of deadlines. Unlike previously proposed scheduling algorithms for broadcast systems which aim to minimize the mean access time, our goal is to identify scheduling algorithms for broadcast systems that ensure requests meet their deadlines. We present a detailed study of the performance of traditional nonmobile real-time strategies and non-real-time mobile strategies, and demonstrate that traditional real-time algorithms do not always perform the best in a mobile environment. We propose a model of a pull-based real-time broadcast system and also propose an efficient scheduling algorithm, called Aggregated Critical Requests (ACR), which is designed for timely delivery of data to mobile clients.

It has been agreed that the acceptance of parallel computing mainly depends on the quality of a high-level programming model, which should provide powerful abstractions in order to free the programmer from the burden of dealing with low-level issues. In this paper, we describe a high-level, graph-oriented programming model, called GOP, and a programming environment, called ClusterGOP, for building and developing message-passing parallel programs. GOP support high-level design and programming of parallel and distributed systems by providing built-in support for a language-level construct and various operations on a high-level abstraction called the logical graph. With GOP, the configuration of the interacting processes of a parallel/distributed program can be represented as a user-specified logical graph that is mapped onto the physical network topology. The programming of inter-process communication and synchronization between local processors is supported by built-in primitives for graph-based operations. ClusterGOP is a programming environment built on top of the GOP model, providing a high-level programming abstraction through the ClusterGOP library for building parallel applications in clusters, It contains tools for development of GOP-based parallel programs with intelligent, visual support and a run-time system for deployment, execution, and management of the programs. ClusterGOP supports both SPMD and MPMD parallel computing paradigms. Also, with ClusterGOP, developing large parallel programs can be simplified with the predefined graph types and scalability support. The ClusterGOP system is portable as its implementation is based almost exclusively on calls to MPI, a portable messagepassing standard.

In this paper, we propose two techniques supporting differentiated service for different priority packets, Differentiated Fair ID Countdown (DFIC) and controllable Fair ID Countdown (CFIC). DFIC supports absolute service differentiation among classes through the use of an explicit priority segment, while CFIC achieves prioritized access through assigning different waiting times for nodes to access the medium. Both of DFIC and CFIC can achieve the fairness among nodes of same priority group. CFIC also achieves controllable relative throughout differentiation among different priority levels and can guarantee starvation-free access for all nodes.

Designing secure clusters has recently become a critical issue to make these systems robust to attacks from the Internet. The Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is one of the most serious problems in the current Internet. To defend against DDoS attacks, clusters usually depend on firewalls or Intrusion Detection systems (IDS). However, once firewall and IDS are breached, the impact of DDoS attack within a cluster can be severe. That is because one infected system or one malicious user, which is believed to be trustworthy, may instantly paralyze the whole cluster through the high speed network. In this paper, we present a deterministic distance packet marking (DDPM) scheme to identify the source nodes generating spoofed IP packets in cluster interconnects. The scheme can be applied to many cluster interconnects such as mesh, torus and hypercube, which are popular in many commercial systems. Our scheme is practically attractive since it is scalable to large networks and does not incur much processing overhead on both switches and nodes.

Some datasets and computing environments are inherently distributed. For example, image data may be gathered and stored at different locations. Although data parallelism is a well-known computational model, there are few programming systems that are both easy to program (for simple applications) and can work across administrative domains. We have designed and implemented a simple programming system, called Trellis-SDP, that facilitates the rapid development of data-intensive applications. Trellis-SDP is layered on top of the Trellis infrastructure, a software system for creating overlay metacomputers: user-level aggregations of computer systems. Trellis-SDP provides a master-worker programming framework where the worker components can run self-contained, new or existing binary applications. We describe two interface functions, namely trellis scan() and trellis gather(), and show how easy it is to get reasonable performance with simple data-parallel applications, such as Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) and Parallel Sorting by Regular Sampling (PSRS).
