With the fast progress in the deployment of wireless networks during the last few years, the global communication market requires the development of new methods for content delivery towards mobile users. It is currently characterized by the introduction of the 3rd generation of terrestrial mobile networks based on 3GPP's UMTS standard. It is expected that this will eventually lead to integrated all-IP-based infrastructures supporting a variety of radio access technologies (so-called beyond-3G-networks or 4th Generation networks). The integration of mobility support, security and accounting and provisioning of differentiated qualities of service are among the issues which are currently researched in the 4G framework. Since it is not possible to change network protocols and infrastructure at once in order to optimize them for mobile services, it is very important to find an appropriate way for the migration from the current infrastructure towards an integrated architecture, where fixed and mobile networks coexist and interoperate in the most effective and flexible way. The integration of satellite communicationnetworks into the terrestrial mobile communication environment is the focus of R&D activities at the Competence Centre for Advanced Satellite communication of the FhG FOKUS institute. These activities are presented in this article, with a focus on the CoDeSat Content Delivery over Satellite project. In the remainder of this article we first summarize services and service requirements as they are considered in our work. We then discuss the challenges derived from these requirements with respect to current network and protocol architectures. Finally, we describe our approach, and the current status of our prototype implementation.

Implementing an Enterprise Resource planning (ERP) software in a global environment, executive sponsors face two key challenges. While business processes are to he re-engineered to align with the ERP software best practices [1], [2], technical architecture and infrastructure needs to be in place globally as per specifications of the packaged software. In the legacy environment, different countries or different business units use different systems, based on local standards supported by local resources. In the new ERP world, globally all the countries must conform to same technical infrastructure. Practical experience suggest that often business process reengineering and technical infrastructure upgrade become two independent projects, business side being lead by individual business managers while the other one being lead by technology managers. When this happens, it leads to a frustrating situation for business managers not being able to test the full life cycle of some of the business processes. Technical managers face multiple critical issues implementing a global solution: to bring different countries at different levels of technical advancement to a common level, implement appropriate communication infrastructure to support global data traffic, consolidating multiple instances [3] and support centralized environment available round the clock to facilitate a holistic view of global business from different time zones. Most of the ERP software are developed in technically advanced countries, standards are often too high for under developed or developing countries. In an effort to bring the global organization to a common platform different countries needs different levels of upgrades. In this paper authors review key technical issues faced is a global upgrade process to support a global ERP implementation and how to resolve those. To minimize costs, like the business managers [2], technical managers of global corporations must also use metanational advantages [4]. W

The growing use of optical packet-switching techniques in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks is reported. The optical wavelength-switched networks provide high degree of network capacity growth. However, these networks suffer from many of the scalability issues. The introduction of optical transparency and the separation of data and control can lead to effective introduction of transparent end-to-end optical burst switching.

The goal of this study is to develop an all-optical photonic network core that stretches as close as possible to the end-user. A practical paradigm for achieving an agile all-photonic network (AAPN) should contain the following: (1) rapidly reconfigurable all-optical space-switching in the core, (2) agility-the ability to perform time domain multiplexing to dynamically allocate bandwidth to traffic flows as the demand varies, and (3) control and routing functionality concentrated at the edge switches that surround the photonic core. At the system level, the photonic network requires dramatic advances in network monitoring and control and demands a completely new approach to topology and switch architecture design. Moreover, the development of a realistic photonic networking solution is only achievable if there is an ongoing and intimate dialogue between researchers exploring physical layer enabling technologies and those proposing networkarchitectures, algorithms, and protocols.

Service discovery is an integral part of the ad hoc networking to achieve stand-alone and self-configurable communicationnetworks. In this paper, we discuss possible service discovery architectures along with the required network support for their implementation, and we propose a distributed service discovery architecture which relies on a virtual backbone for locating and registering available services within a dynamic network topology. Our proposal consists of two independent components: (i) formation of a virtual backbone and (ii) distribution of service registrations, requests, and replies. The first component creates a mesh structure from a subset of a given network graph that includes the nodes acting as service brokers and a subset of paths (which we refer as virtual links) connecting them. Service broker nodes (SBNs) constitute a dominating set, i.e. all the nodes in the network are either in this set or only one-hop away from at least one member of the set. The second component establishes sub-trees rooted at service requesting nodes and registering servers for efficient dissemination of the service discovery probing messages. Extensive simulation results are provided for comparison of performance measures, i.e. latency, success rate, and control message overhead, when different architectures and network support mechanisms are utilized in service discovery.
