Summary form only *** proposed a low noise hybrid automatic gain controlled erbium doped fiber amplifier (HAGC EDFA) with both electrical and optical feedback . The HAGC EDFA has lower NF than the conventional optical automatic gain clamped (OAGC) EDFA, equal to normal EDFAs without AGC, controlling the feedback loop light to maintain the state just before oscillation. The HAGC EDFA has less power consumption than the conventional OAGC EDFA with low optical feedback loop light power. Moreover, this HAGC EDFA has good characteristics for WDM systems with add/drop nodes. Even when four of the nine channels are dropped, the deviation of the gain varies only 0.066 dB MAX, and the gain varies only 0.28 dB MAX. The HAGC EDFA should be accommodated in all-optical networks in the near future.

Various network applications are developing fast in recent years. A large-scale network switching system is needed to satisfy all the demands among network service providers and populations, such as data, voice, image, video, video on demand, videoconferencing, telecommunications, remote control and teaching, etc. A general large-scale network switching system cannot fulfill the various application needs, such as the correctness of data transmission and the capacity of extension switch's input/output port. In this paper, we propose a nested ring-based architecture to build a very large-scale network switching system. In order to satisfy the various network application needs, a nested ring-based architecture is designed as a switching element. It can let input data exchange fist to destination output port, and its input/output port can easily be extended up to 100 ports or 1000 ports, to become a very large-scale network switching system. The simulation results show that a better performance in data transmission, delay, throughput and extensibility can be achieved in the proposed system.

Wireless networks are becoming progressively the access technology of preference to the global Internet, while fast backbone wired networks (mostly optical IP based) will be transporting large volumes of aggregate traffic. This scenario is one of the main visions set for 4th generation wireless networks. However, in order for this vision to become reality, new features need to be introduced in the wireless networking infrastructure, one of the "key" ones being the ability to provide service differentiation. This is the subject of the present work. It addresses the issues of extending service differentiation to wireless communication systems enabling a network to effectively service delay and throughput sensitive applications. We propose a service differentiation capable network architecture. Our study investigates how different packet scheduling can be accommodated in wireless networks to provide service differentiation for several types of traffic. Our design considers the need for interoperability between wired and wireless world, the spectrum limitations and "error" prone behavior of the wireless channel.

The Tian-Guang HVDC power transmission system delivers 1800 MW over 960 km from converter stations (Bipolar 900 MW) at Tianshengqiao in Guangxi Province to the Guangzhou converter station in Guangdong Province. Both converter stations are connected to the respective AC networks through 220 kV buses. The HVDC transmission system is an important power link in the Southern China electric power network and transfers bulk power to Guangzhou area together with 500 kV AC lines in parallel. This paper describes the control and protection (C&P) system of the Tian-Guang HVDC power transmission project. all aspects regarding the used structure and redundancy are addressed. The C&P system includes also the communication system, the measuring system, the data acquisition systems (SER, TFR) and the master clock system. The complete design process including off-site and on-site tests is described as well. Special control functions and all new technologies which are used will be covered. Innovations like the decentralised I/O units with the redundant optical field bus, the hybrid optical measuring system, active DC filters and the new electrode tine monitoring system are introduced. The test results of the off-site tests and the field testing are discussed. Finally, operating experience from the first operation in December 2000 to the present, is reported as well.

Multi-Layer Switch (MLS) architectures leverage recent advances in optical transport reach, all optical switching, conventional electrical switching, and control plane standards to significantly reduce both capital and operational expenditures for next generation network designs. Although each is valuable as a stand-alone technology, combined they provide a number of additional benefits that can only be achieved when fully integrated. Most notable are elimination of back-to-back intra-office interfaces and back-to-back transponders at signal by-pass nodes while still providing the ability to groom and aggregate subwavelength traffic when necessary. Along with the reduced equipment count comes savings in floor space, power, sparing, network management, fibre congestion, and operational costs. There is also an inherent stability and improved network utilization obtained by having the same control plane agent responsible for all three layers that is not possible with discrete machines even if they are from the same vendor. Consequently, all four emerging technologies must be employed together to fully realize the promise of true optical networking and leverage the value each brings.

The Plurix project implements an object-oriented operating system (OS) for PC clusters. network communication is implemented via the distributed shared memory (DSM) paradigm. Memory consistency is maintained by restartable transactions and an optimistic synchronization scheme, that have been used in database technology in the past. Originally, DSM systems were built to support parallel algorithms, but using DSM as a foundation for a general purpose OS offers interesting perspectives in designing and using distributed applications. The OS, including kernel and all drivers, is written in Plurix Java. Our Java compiler directly translates Java source code into Intel machine instructions. Some minor language extensions support device-level programming. During the development of the system we identified conceptual problems which are caused by the restartability requirement of transactions. Clearly interrupts do not reoccur in case of an aborted transaction. Without proper precaution interrupts would get lost or devices could receive broken commands. In this paper we shortly review our DSM system and present the "smart buffer" concept to bridge the gap between restartable DSM transactions and non-restartable device operations and events. Finally, we validate our proposed solution by performance measurements and compare the kernel interface to traditional operating systems.

This paper evaluates the gain in throughput achieved by the use of a shared buffer to realize the output queues of switching elements in the presence of self-similar multimedia traffic. Unlike previous studies, we focus on credit-based systems typical of networks used in parallel multimedia servers. It is generally believed that buffer sharing improves performance in the presence of non-uniform traffic. With self-similar traffic exhibiting burstiness over all time-scales, however, we show that buffer sharing is a superior design choice only when the total buffer capacity is more than a certain minimum threshold. We explain the non-trivial reasons for the existence of this threshold through an analysis based on head-of-line blocking probabilities. The results presented here have implications in switch design, especially in systems where the total buffering capacity may be limited.

We first propose a simple and efficient multicast partitioning protocol, called Lookback protocol, for employment in an asynchronous WDM single optical star network. network nodes use random access schemes to send reservation packets over a dedicated packet reservation channel. A central traffic scheduler is allocated to coordinate message transmissions. It executes the Look-back scheduling scheme in real time by searching (back into the input queue) for a candidate multicast message that can be received by all of the intended recipients. Such an approach effectively reduces the head-of-line blocking effects. Performance results conducted via simulations have shown that networks employing such scheduling, mechanisms can exhibit superior network throughput levels and delay performances. To apply this mechanism to a wider range of networking environments, we further consider an inlet-connected dual-star architecture and propose the Modified Lookback (Mlookback) mechanism. By using a simple heuristic approach, the Mlookback scheme is able to successfully, exploit the inter-data channels and properly utilize the wavelength reuse property of the intra-data channels. Performance results have demonstrated the merits of deploying the underlying Mlookback multicast algorithm in such a dual-star structure.

As Internet technology becomes more pervasive, homes are getting connected to cable or DSL. The increasing user demands for "always on" service along with multiple connectivity for voice and data is gradually making the presence of a residential gateway in every household a reality. A residential gateway should have routing and bridging capabilities along with seamless connectivity to contemporary premise networking technologies. Integration of all these features on a single device essentially requires a rich architecture, smart design techniques and thorough verification. This paper describes the architecture and design of a broadband network controller which is a critical component of TI's voice and data centric residential gateway solution.

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is adapting current data networking technologies to fly on future spaceflight missions. The benefits of using commercially based networking standards and protocols have been widely discussed and are expected to include reduction in overall mission cost, shortened integration and test (I&T) schedules, increased operations flexibility, and hardware and software upgradeability/scalability with developments ongoing in the commercial world. The networking effort is a comprehensive one encompassing missions ranging from small University Explorer (UNEX) class spacecraft to large observatories such as the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST). Mission aspects such as flight hardware and software, ground station hardware and software, operations, RF communications, and security (physical and electronic) are all being addressed to ensure a complete end-to-end system solution. One of the current networking development efforts at GSFC is the SpaceLAN (Spacecraft Local Area network) project, development of a space-qualifiable Ethernet network. To this end we have purchased an IEEE 802.3-compatible 10/100/1000 Media Access control (MAC) layer Intellectual Property (IP) core and are designing a network node interface (NNI) and associated network components such as a switch. These systems will ultimately allow the replacement of the typical MIL-STD-1553/1773 and custom interfaces that inhabit most spacecraft. In this paper we will describe our current Ethernet NNI development along with a novel new space qualified physical layer that will be used in place of the standard interfaces. We will outline our plans for development of space qualified network components that mill allow future spacecraft to operate in significant radiation environments while using a single onboard network for reliable commanding and data transfer.
