The paper discusses the shortcomings of current day networks in transporting exponentially increasing data traffic. Bursty and unpredictable characteristics of data traffic would need thorough overhauling of existing networks. An all optical network architecture is envisaged for the future with electrical elements only in the access feeds. Various issues, techniques and architecture are discussed. The futuristic network is foreseen as an all optical, data centric one with mesh-ring-mesh topology, implementing QoS and distributed intelligence and management.

Fibre channel SAN (storage area network) is considered to be a promising solution to address storage problems caused by the sheer volume of data and their management. To adopt this new storage environment, we design and implement a high performance fibre channel network driver for SAN-attached RAID controllers in a real-time operating system. We describe the architecture of the fibre channel driver which consists of two modes; a target mode and an initiator mode. An exception handling mechanism for enduring a disk failure is also given. Lastly, we measured the performance of the fibre channel driver. Testing results reveal a moderately successful performance of the fibre channel driver.

High power GaN-based laser diodes (LDs) are very desirable for various applications such as optical storage systems. We have obtained GaN films of low dislocation density using epitaxial lateral overgrowth (ELO) technique and the raised-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (RP-MOCVD) technique. Dislocation density of the improved GaN is about 10(7) cm(-2). Optimized GaN-based LDs fabricated on the improved GaN films have operated up to 35mW without any kink. The lifetime is more than 500 hours with a constant power of 20 mW at 25 degreesC under continuous wave (CW) conditions. Furthermore, we have introduced buried-ridge laser diode structure in order to control the optical transverse mode. The features of the far field patterns (FFPs) of LDs with AlGaN burying layers indicate their controllability.

This paper analyses an architecture of network-based control system and deals with its application using the CAN protocol. It is difficult to determine an optimal network architecture for a specific system. We propose an architecture of the network-based control system applicable to a specific AGV system with a manipulator arm. The fixed number of periodic messages to be occurred is pre-defined in this system. To determine whether the proposed system architecture is effective or not, we perform a traffic analysis for the real-time communication of all messages. Through simulation, the range of transmission speed is found satisfying the required conditions, and the number of possible sensors to be added is investigated for improving the system performance, when the sampling periods of analog sensors are determined under a fixed condition that the transmission speed is over 500 Kbits/sec.

New communication technologies are being developed and new user requirements are growing due to advances in fiber optics providing high link capacity at low cost. Traditional solutions are based on processing resources of host and network nodes in order to optimize link utilization. A simpler and lightweight solution could be reached by a new approach for designing network protocols; our proposal is initially limited to the LAN/structured cabling system environment, not excluding a further extension to MAN/WAN support. The leading idea is a broadband network architecture, based on native flow control, dynamic resource allocation and reallocation, and synchronous, connection-oriented fast circuit switching. It will provide a service based on multi-rate channels with short setup time and fixed switching requirements, as well as applications with bursty asynchronous traffic. A project framework is presented addressing the most important issues; physical, data link and network layer functions, data transfer schemes and traditional TCP/IP compatibility.

The short message service (SMS), a bidirectional service for short alphanumeric (up to 160 bytes) messages, is a unique feature of GSM, not found in older analog systems. We propose a multicast short message service architecture over a backbone network. We demonstrate some approaches to maintain the location information of the short message service center consistent to the home location register and illustrate our scheme for mobile-terminated short message transfer. Finally, we simulate and evaluate this architecture. Our simulation indicates that the proposed strong consistency approach has optimal efficiency by adjusting parameters. Also, the proposed architecture efficiently provides a self-routing capability and multicast functionality in the cellular backbone network. This study also provides a further insight on the issues of a multicast wireless cellular backbone network and demonstrates a referable methodology to propose and analyze a multicast cellular backbone network, which can promote the technology of personal communication networks.

Next generation cellular systems will be mostly data oriented. Current circuit switching will not be effective for such systems and there will be a need for increased packet switching based on the IP networking. In this paper a radical approach is studied in which all traffic in cellular system would be based on IP packets. Cellular systems data transfer capacity is limited by the radio links from base stations which can be considered as traffic control gateways. It is shown that this makes possible to build an IP backbone network with overprovisioned traffic capacity with respect to radio access base station gateways. Proper design of such network will ensure that there will be no necessity for resource reservation and all traffic control will be done in the base stations. issues related to the design and operation of such network are studied.

The development of fault tolerant embedded control systems, such as flight control systems, FCS, is currently highly specialized and time consuming. We introduce a conceptual architecture for the next decade control system where all control and logic is distributed to a number of computer nodes locally linked to actuators and connected via a communication network. In this way we substantially decrease the lifecycle cost of such embedded systems and acquire scalable fault tolerance. Fault tolerance is based on redundancy and in our concept permanent faults are covered by hardware replication and transient faults, fault detection and processing by software techniques. With intelligent nodes and the use of inherent redundancy a robust and simple fault tolerant system is introduced with a minimum of both hardware and bandwidth requirements. The study is based on an FCS for JAS 39 Gripen, a multirole combat aircraft that is statically unstable at subsonic speed.

This paper presents and discusses the Defense Information Service network (DISN) global mobile wireless networking architecture to extend the range of broadband services to mobile users available to fixed users. The roaming and mobile users will have to operate across a wide range of network performance, and choosing among alternative media and overlays for best performance. Diverse wireless and wired networks are integrated through software that mediates between the mobile terminal and the networks it could possibly connect to, supporting the mobile users as it roams among the multiple networks. The overall objective of the paper is to introduce and resolve technical issues and problems in the development of a mobile and wireless DISN network services, and answer some of the questions on the implementation of the new services and systems.
