We are truly in the midst of the "Information Age". communications equipment range from devices that fit in your pocket to equipment that brings interactive television viewing and the internet to your living room. Market forces on these communication devices are demanding indeed. all communications equipment must be interoperable. Multi-protocol support is required for interoperability with different networks or even different equipment on the same network. Minimizing the ROM and RAM footprint of the devices is essential in order to compete in the marketplace. CPU utilization due to the network protocol stacks must be kept to a minimum, both to allow the lowest cost CPU as well as to maximize CPU availability for multimedia applications. Many of these market forces seem to compete with each other. As we look at various software architecture approaches for these devices, we will uncover inefficiencies and options that create cost, performance, and footprint tradeoffs to the equipment manufacturer. The goal of this paper is to functionally specify a software environment to support the network interface requirements of a networked embedded system. First, the general characteristics of a networked embedded system will be defined. From these characteristics, requirements of a networked embedded system will be identified and potential approaches will be outlined. The potential approaches will then be examined with respect to the tradeoffs to be made in order to fulfill the requirements.

We develop a perturbation theory to analytically calculate effects of interchannel collisions on Gaussian pulses in a wavelength-division-multiplexed system with strong dispersion management. We show that, for complete collisions, the collision-induced frequency shift pf a Gaussian pulse is negligible, while for incomplete collisions, this shift is significant. We also show that, as the dispersion management strength increases, the collision-induced position shift becomes more important than the frequency shift. An interesting result of our analysis is that the collision-induced frequency and position shifts depend on the dispersion management strength and the path-average dispersion, but not on the lengths of the two opposite-dispersion fiber segments in the dispersion map. We check the analytical predictions against direct PDE simulations, finding satisfactory agreement between them. We also give an estimate of the limit imposed on the transmission distance by such collisions.

To achieve optical transparency in Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) networks of increasing size, in terms of both the number of nodes and network span, optical amplifiers are necessary to compensate for propagation and splitting losses encountered by an optical signal from any source to any destination. A recent study showed that in small and medium size broadcast-and-select star/tree networks the necessary number of amplifiers can be minimized by allowing wavelengths to operate at different power levels. Finding this minimum number of amplifiers and their locations requires solving a Mixed Integer Non-Linear Problem (MINLP). This paper presents a generalization of the above problem, called Generalized optimal Placement of optical Amplifiers in broadcast-and-select WDM networks, or GPA problem. In the GPA problem the number of optical amplifiers is minimized taking into account that the fiber layout may include star/tree and ring topologies, and the installation and maintenance costs of the amplifier may depend on its location, i.e., solutions with equal number of amplifiers may not be equally appealing. The GPA problem is solved using a Simulated Annealing (SA) approach. whose flexibility makes it an ideal heuristic to cope with the various fiber layouts and the location dependent cost issue. In addition, the SA approach offers the advantage of escaping local minima of the cost function, thus providing satisfactory solutions independent of the chosen initial solution. The optimal solution of the GPA problem provides a versatile technique to design cost effective WDM networks based on various fiber layouts, taking into account other practical constraints, such as the installation and management costs of the necessary optical amplifiers.

Developing an efficient restoration strategy assumes a greater significance in a WDM backbone than a conventional WAN backbone due to the fact that a single link carries an enormous amount of bandwidth. This paper provides a summary of results of our spare capacity planning and restoration schemes on Pan-American and Pan-European networks. The spare capacity planning for both path and link based restoration are considered and their costs compared. Distributed and centralized restoration schemes, which have no preplanning and no a priori knowledge of the network capacities, are simulated on these networks for single link failures. Both Link and path restorations are considered. We compare the restoration times of the various scenarios (centralized-link, distributed-link, centralized-path, distributed-path restorations) that arise in these two networks and show that our algorithms were able to achieve 100% restoration under a second for the networks considered. Our results show that centralized restoration can be faster drail distributed restoration. This is against the common belief that distributed restoration is faster than the centralized restoration, We also analyze why this happens and the conditions (traffic matrix) under which the distributed restoration may be faster than the centralized. Additionally, we show that a centralized link restoration is always faster than a distributed link restoration.

Recent development high density Wave Division Multiplexing fiber systems allows for the deployment of a dedicated optical Internet network for large volume backbone pipes that does not require an underlying multi-service SONET/SDH and ATM transport protocol. Some intrinsic characteristics of Internet traffic such as its self similar nature, server bound congestion, routing and data asymmetry allow for highly optimized traffic engineered networks using individual wavelengths. By transmitting GigaBit Ethernet or SONET/SDH frames naively over WDM wavelengths that directly interconnect high perforate routers the original concept of the Internet as an intrinsically survivable datagram network is possible. Traffic engineering, restoral, protection and bandwidth management of the network must now be carried out at the IP layer and so new routing or switching protocols such as MPLS that allow for uni-directional paths with fast restoral and protection at the IP layer become essential for a reliable production network. The deployment of high density WDM municipal and campus networks also gives carriers and ISPs the flexibility to offer customers an integrated and seamless set of optical Internet services.

The U.S. A-my Medical Command, lead by the Brooke Army Medical Center, has embarked on a futuristic project that will revolutionize the practice of teleradiology in the DoD. The U.S. Army Virtual Radiology Environment (USAVRE) is a CONUS-based network that connects all the Army's major medical centers and Regional Medical Commands (RMC). The purpose of the USAVRE is to improve the quality, access, and cost of radiology services in the Army via the use of state-of-the-art medical imaging, computer, and networking technologies. The USAVRE contains multimedia-viewing workstations for static and dynamic modality cases. The storage and archiving systems are based on a distributed computing environment using Common Object Request Broker architecture (CORBA) middleware protocols. Collaborations between archive centers and viewing workstations are managed by CORBA functions and multimedia object streams. The underlying telecommunications network is an ATM-based backbone network that connects to the RMC regional networks and PACS networks at medical centers and RMC clinics. The U.S. Army Information systems Engineering Command (USAISEC) at Ft. Huachuca, AZ is responsible for the ATM backbone network to the RMC sites. This project is a collaborative effort between Army, university, and industry centers with expertise in teleradiology and Global PACS applications. This paper describes the telecommunications backbone network architecture for the Cable Bundling Initiative (CBI) being deployed by the Technology Integration Center. The U.S. Army U.S. Army Information systems Engineering Command (USAISEC) at Ft. Huachuca, AZ has begun deployment of a 45 Mbps backbone network called the Cable Bundling Initiative (CBI). The CBI backbone is upgradable to OC-3 (155 Mbps) and OC-12 (622 Mops) transmission links. A goal of CBI is to bundle the dedicated networks and support all MACOMs in the transition to a DISN ATM-based network in the future. The CBI is a candidate backbone for the USA

With the high interest of network operators and manufacturers for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networking technology, the need for management systems adapted to this new technology keeps increasing. We investigated this topic and produced outputs through the specification of the functional architecture, network layered model, and through the development of new, TMN-based, information models for the management of optical networks and network elements. Based on these first outputs, defects in each layer together with parameters for performance management / monitoring have been identified for each type of optical network element, and each atomic function describing the element, including functions for both the transport of payload signals and of overhead information. The list of probable causes has been established for the identified defects. A second aspect consists in the definition of network-level parameters, if such photonic technology-related parameters are to be considered at this level. It is our conviction that some parameters can be taken into account at the network level for performance management, based on physical measurements within the network. Some parameters could possibly be used as criteria for configuration management, in the route calculation processes, including protection. The outputs of these specification activities are taken into account in the development of a manageable WDM network prototype which will be used as a test platform to demonstrate configuration, fault, protection and performance management in a real network, in the scope of the ACTS-MEPHISTO project. This network prototype will also be used in a larger size experiment in the context of the ACTS-PELICAN field trial (Pan-European Lightwave Core and Access network).

Hierarchical optical interconnection networks have the potential of solving the communication bottleneck that has evolved in parallel processing systems due big increases in processor speeds. Hierarchical optical Ring Interconnection network (HORN) [12] is one network architecture that was proposed to provide scalability to a larger number of processing nodes (PNs) with low latency and high bandwidth. In HORN PNs are arranged in rings and those rings are grouped together hierarchically in higher level rings. While collisions of data from multiple sources in hierarchical networks like HORN are reduced by separating nodes spatially and by wavelength, they can't be prevented completely and a media access (MAC) protocols must be used to that end. An in depth analysis of five collision free, single hop protocols is performed in terms of average delay and system throughput. The protocols analyzed are: time division multiple access (TDMA) [13, 14], TDMA with arbitration [12, 13, 14], FatMAC [6] DMON [15], and token hierarchical optical ring network (THORN). The first four protocols are documented in the literature but the fifth THORN, was developed expressly for HORN. While all the protocols support the scalability, objectives of HORN, THORN is shown to have the lowest delay and a throughput comparable to the other four protocols.

optical WDM networks promise to deliver the bandwidth needed for the next generation Internet infrastructure. The commercial optical WDM networks today are primary point-to-point transport networks. In order to handle the emerging dynamic on-demand broadband multimedia applications, a new switching paradigm known as Just-In-Time Switching has been proposed as a scheme that promises to deliver high bandwidth, low latency for highly bursty traffic. In this talk, we describe the Just-In-Time switching approach and the corresponding signaling protocol analysis and design work done under the DARPA funded Multiwavelength optical network (MONET) project. In transparent switched optical WDM networks, the very high bandwidth afforded in an optical channel renders a circuit switching approach inefficient. Likewise, the lack of practical optical buffer technology, and the difficulty of providing mutable optical headers render a packet switching approach impractical. To accommodate for these characteristics, under the DARPA funded MONET program, a new Just-In-Time switching technique was proposed that are well-suited for transparent switched optical WDM networks. Just-In-Time Switching operates as a hybrid between conventional circuit switching and conventional packet switching. It resembles circuit switching in that it does not require the use of optical buffers to resolve conflicts. Rather it relies on the use of out-of-band (OOB) signaling to marshal the necessary switching resources along the optical transmission path. Likewise, it resembles packet switching in that a network resource is reserved only for the duration of the transmission of the optical burst across that resource. Afterwards the resource may be immediately released. Under the MONET program, the Bellcore network control and Management Task Team has analyzed the requirements and the performances of a family of signaling protocols for use in transparent switched optical WDM networks.
