Laser and LED-based wireless communication systems provide license-free interconnection for voice, data. and video transport with high bandwidth and high data rate capabilities. These systems allow for the immediate, reliable and low-cost extension of copper and fiber-based networks to any end user, providing efficient bypass access to high data rate backbone networks and interconnection among voice and data network components operating at speeds ranging from T-l voice to full throughput ATM at 155 Mbps. The wireless optical beams constitute a "Virtual Fiber((TM))" in the air, providing the capabilities of fiber in situations where wired connectivity is unavailable, impractical, expensive or slow-to-implement, while achieving a combination of cost, bandwidth, speed and reliability that cannot be matched by microwave, spread spectrum or other competing wireless technologies. The use of optical beams in the air eliminates the RF bottleneck by providing bypass access and building-to-building links with transport connectivity at and above 155 Mbps. Future generations are already under development which will accommodate emerging technologies including Gigabit Ethernet. This paper will address the following issues: (1) Trade-offs between RF and optical wireless technologies and products. (2) The effects of weather and the achievement of all-weather operations to distances of 1 km. (3) The achievement of reliable operations with examples and case studies.

Effect of nonlinear polarization rotation in birefringent optical fiber was used to distinguish the different levels of incident optical beams. This effect was employed to design all-optical switching and routing devices for processing of bit word streams and optical polarization transistor to amplify optical pulses. These devices can be used to perform summation and multiplication of binary words. Serial and parallel representation of the bit words discussed from the point of view bit flow architecture of optical computers. A method of time distributed parallel representation of the bit words is proposed. It is shown that this representation permits to obtain such form of the result that the beginning of the result may be used in further computations before the previous computation is completed. Thus, in spite of the fact that the whole process of multiplication of two N-bite words required 2N time steps of computation, the delay between receiving the beginning of the input words and sending the beginning of the result to the next processor is only one time step. The performance of all-optical computer may be improved by the use of extremely short femtosecond optical pulses. In this case, nonlinear effects can compensate the dispersion broadening of the optical pulses and soliton regime of propagation is achieved. Nonlinear interaction between the optical solitons with orthogonal polarization permits to perform high-performance computations.

In multipoint-to-point connections, the traffic at the root (destination) is the combination of all traffic originating at the leaves. A crucial concern in the case of multiple senders is how to define fairness within a multicast group, and among groups and point-to-point connections. Fairness definition can be complicated since the multipoint connection can have the same identifier (VPI/VCI) on each link, and senders might not be distinguishable in this case. Many rate allocation algorithms implicitly assume that there is only one sender in each VC, which does not hold for multipoint-to-point cases. We give various possibilities for defining fairness for multipoint connections, and show the tradeoffs involved. In addition, we show that ATM bandwidth allocation algorithms need to be adapted to give fair allocations for multipoint-to-point connections.

The U.S. Army Medical Command, lead by the Brooke Army Medical Center, has embarked on a visionary project. The U.S. Army Virtual Radiology Environment (USAVRE) is a CONUS-based network that connects all the Army's major medical centers and Regional Medical Commands (RMC). The purpose of the USAVRE is to improve the quality, access, and cost of radiology services in the Army via the use of state-of-the-art medical imaging, computer, and networking technologies. The USAVRE contains multimedia viewing workstations;database archive systems are based on a distributed computing environment using Common Object Request Broker architecture (CORBA) middleware protocols. The underlying telecommunications network is an ATM-based backbone network that connects the RMC regional networks and PACS networks at medical centers and RMC clinics. This project is a collaborative effort between Army, university, and industry centers with expertise in teleradiology and Global PACS applications. This paper describes a model and simulation of the USAVRE for performance evaluation purposes. As a first step the results of a Technology Assessment and Requirements Analysis (TARA) - an analysis of the workload in Army radiology departments, their equipment and their staffing. Using the TARA data and other workload information, we have developed a very detailed analysis of the workload and workflow patterns of our Medical Treatment Facilities. We are embarking on modeling and simulation strategies, which will form the foundation for the VRE network. The workload analysis is performed for each radiology modality in a RMC site. The workload consists of the number of examinations per modality, type of images per exam, number of images per exam, and size of images. The frequency for store and forward cases, second readings, and interactive consultation cases are also determined. These parameters are translated into the model described below. optical burst switching (OBS) is a new paradigm proposed to efficiently support the ever-growing broadband multimedia traffic either directly or indirectly (e.g., via IP) over all optical WDM networks. In this paper, we propose a new prioritized OBS protocol based on Just-Enough-Time (JET) which can provide Quality of Service (QoS) in buffer-less WDM optical networks. Specifically, we apply OBS to support two traffic classes: real-time and non-real-lime, such that each burst belonging to the former is assigned a higher priority by simply using an additional offset time between the burst and its corresponding control (set-up) packet. We analyze the lower and upper bounds on the blocking probability of each traffic class, and evaluate the performance of the proposed prioritized OBS protocol through analysis and simulation. We show that real-time traffic can achieve a significantly reduced blocking probability by using a reasonable amount of additional offset time. In addition, the overall blocking probability and throughput can be maintained regardless of the additional offset time used.

Trend towards the third generation PCS (Personal communications systems) calls for support of multi-media services in multi layered cell architecture system via multi air-interfaces with multi-operators and multi services provider, offering a reliable and contiguous world-wide coverage in order to allow seamless roaming for subscribers. The coverage ranges from low speed, high user density environments such as business sector to high speed, low user density open areas. It is realized that all users and operators' requirements can not be economically met by one system but through a combination and enhancements of existing fixed, cordless, cellular, satellite and data networks, which are designed around a specific set of services and environments. Clearly, there is a need for such systems to interwork together in a co-ordinated manner to satisfy three main requirements of the third generation PCS, i.e. coverage, mobility and service. In this paper interworking between cordless, and cellular systems, e.g. DECT and GSM, is thoroughly investigated. The mobility related issues in the context of registration, location management and call routing are discussed. Then signalling load issue in the interworking system is investigated and some new techniques are proposed to reduce the imposed signalling load on the cellular system's network.

The effect produced by Four-Wave Mixing (FWM) in a Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) transmission is complex to analyze due to its many dependencies. When the optical channels are equally spaced in a WDM transmission, new optical generated signals will fall entirely onto other channels thus causing inband crosstalk The channel that will suffer from more crosstalk components is that in the middle of the signal band. In this paper we present a theoretical study of the total crosstalk power generated onto each optical channel, equally spaced, using Dispersion Shifted Fibre. Our results show that when the WDM signal range is larger than a certain value, the most degraded channel is not the one that suffers from more contributions but the one that suffers from contributions with higher FWM efficiency. We have studied the limitation that FWM imposes on the number of channels and channel spacing regarding the most degraded channel.

Advanced manipulation skills that enable cooperating robots in a work cell to recognise, handle and assemble arbitrarily placed objects require sensory information on both the environment and assembly process. Using standard approaches it becomes difficult to coordinate sensor usage and data fusion under a given task when the number of sensors becomes large or is changed during run-time. We present a solution to both coordination and fusion based on the multi (sensor) agent paradigm: each agent implements a sensory skill, a negotiation protocol and a physical communication interface to all other agents. Within this sensor-network teams cooperate on a common task. They are formed dynamically after a negotiation phase following a specific task formulation. Our framework consists of a formal specification of the requirements that the sensory skill of an agent has to meet and a comprehensive library of (C++)-objects encapsulating all of the negotiation protocol and communications. This separation makes it very easy to implement individual sensory skills. We show how the abstract concepts of this approach and the metaphor of "negotiation" work in a real-world network: several uncalibrated cameras are used to guide a manipulator towards a target. We also show how agent-teams may easily (self-)reconfigure during task execution in the case of unexpected events. optical wavelength domain code-division multiplexing access (WD-CDMA) using an AOM-based ultrafast optical pulse shaping approach is proposed and demonstrated experimentally at 1550 nm. This new multiplexing technique utilizes wavelength domain codes that are essentially different optical spectral patterns in order to achieve CDMA. In addition to the advantages of the conventional CDMA technique, WD-CDMA can make full use of the entire optical bandwidth without requiring faster optical switches or modulators. This approach also drastically reduces sensitivity to fiber dispersion. Experimentally, we demonstrate an optical spectral encoder using ultrafast optical pulse shaping with 16 wavelength bits over an optical bandwidth of 5 THz. The spectrally-encoded optical pulse generated with the spectral encoder is then decoded with different WD-CDMA codes in the spectral domain. Different code-division channels can thus extract their own bit information while sharing the same spectral-encoded laser pulse as their common carrier. These spectral-encoded pulses are shown using the cross-correlation technique to be confined within a time slot of 15 ps. A larger number of WD bits is also achievable with our system.
