communicationnetworks have matured to realize online digital contents publishing. This paper proposes a contents publishing architecture which makes a large-scale contents delivery available using recent networks. Multicast is a promising network technology to provide large-scale efficient delivery. However, the issues of reliable and restricted delivery using multicast need to be solved to realize a practical contents publishing. A reliable multicast tool is proposed for error free and confirmed delivery to thousands of users. A contents publishing procedure including service access control and delivery charge is also proposed for commercial publishing.

Attempting to incorporate new technology into an existing environment is often very difficult. The problems are lengthy to resolve, wrought with confusion and seldom turn out like anyone expected. This document represents an overview of one such attempt. It outlines the general areas of concern which could be affected by a transition, and potential problems that may be encountered as a result of the effort. Over the past several decades, many local, state and federal agencies are pressing for more efficient use of frequency spectrums. The urgency of this issue has grown due to the demands of several groups wanting access to these channels for commercial use. Pager systems, cellular telephones, radio systems for private businesses all demand more space. Public safety agencies are starting to fear their needs will diminish in importance as the available channel spectrums are consumed by commercial ventures. How to share these channels, purchase appropriate equipment to meet your needs, and stay within a reasonable budget are not easy tasks. Public safety agencies who rely on communicationnetworks in the performance of their jobs also know why encryption is important. Protecting the rights of citizens as police exchange information over the air, maintaining the integrity of an investigation and officer safety are all concerns police must address each time they use a radio.

The design of interconnection networks for massively parallel processing (MPP) systems is inherently responsive to advances in VLSI and packaging technology. Optimizing the cost and performance of interconnection networks under these constraints requires an understanding of how technology trends affect network design tradeoffs at the architectural level. Technology trends expected to exert a major influence on the cost-performance of MPP interconnection networks include "gigascale integration" (GSI) capability at the chip-level ($>$one billion devices per chip), die bonding techniques permitting greater than 1000 I/Os, the use of advanced multichip substrates, and the development of high-performance three-dimensional interconnects using both electrical and optical connections for through-wafer signaling. The research focus of this thesis is to explore how MPP networkarchitecture can be designed to best exploit VLSI and packaging advances. This problem is explored in the context of two primary research contributions. The first major contribution is a new MPP network topology, the offset cube, designed to leverage the three-dimensional packaging advantages of through-wafer optical interconnects without sacrificing the architectural efficiency required in a multicomputer network. High-performance, deadlock-free wormhole routing protocols are developed for the offset cube and evaluated using flit-level network simulation. The second major contribution is an integrated modeling framework for exploring the interaction of architectural features and implementation technology in VLSI communication routers. The framework consists of a hierarchy of models describing router microarchitecture, chip-area requirements, and internal flow-control delays as a function of both architectural and technological parameters. The framework also includes a flit-level network simulator incorporating behavioral models for router architectural features. Using these models, a set of experimenta

In this paper we present enhancements for a wireless PCS architecture which distributes processing from the mobile switching centers and cell sites. In a wireless environment all the call processing components need access to the subscriber data. The subscriber profile distributing scheme envisioned for this architecture provides a method to localize data in clusters and access it remotely, which leads to reduction in service profile transfers and better load sharing. Our propagation model of service profile transfers also reduces the number of times service profile updating is required. We also introduce a way to incorporate wireless intelligent network services in the callcontrol phase and provide processing of these services in a distributed manner. The interworking needed to allow coexistence with conventional wireless networks is also presented.

communication data systems play a central role in Medical Imaging. Both PACS internal image networks and teleradiology systems need a very large bandwidth to operate. Until recently, industrial standarized protocols have proved to be inadequate to meet the requirements of image transfer at a speed compatible with patient-care needs. PACS vendors, especially when using a shared memory architecture, have developed and inserted proprietary protocols in their systems, causing the well known drawbacks of not standardized environments. Recent technological advances provide potential solutions to these constraints. ATM, above all, provides the aggregate bandwidth and throughput that may be satisfactory to the medical imaging community. At the moment there are no references of working PACS using ATM but several experiments have been reported. This work reports the experiences acquired using ATM as a backbone for a distributed medical imaging system under development at CRS4. The attention is focussed, in particular, on the performance of DICOM over ATM. It is well known that the transmission subset of DICOM typically uses TCP/IP protocols. A protocol stack is created for running over ATM, where each layer segments and reassembles data according to its rules. This configuration has the great advantage of allowing ATM communication without any change in the DICOM protocol. Moreover it allows the optimization of different networks segment, using different low level protocols, within a single DICOM environment. As a drawback, an overload of protocol data is introduced, lowering the troughput to values for below the nominal ones.

There is a need for an automated architecture engineering tool to support advanced communicationnetworking efforts. Agencies, such as the US Army's communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) and Program Executive Office Command, control, and communications systems (PEO-C3S) have the requirement for a suite of applications to provide detailed diagramming, definition and analysis. Many COTS and GOTS products are available to perform some of the tasks required in analyzing, designing, developing, and implementing a network. Many tools which are graphically oriented for use in designing a network, do not provide the capability of automated analysis. While many other network analysis tools are not graphical or user-friendly, they lack the ability to store relevant `user' data. Some of the information to populate the networkarchitectures exists in inventory databases but the data is not easily accessible and does not contain all the information required.

This paper describes an adaptive HF radio systemsarchitecture, from concept through to implementation. The key to adaptivity lies in software, and some of the software issues which affect the design and realisation of an HF 'software radio' will be discussed, Mitola (1), Lackey and Upmal (2). This adaptive system has been developed with the aim of providing a flexible testbed upon which to test new techniques for automated HF radio systems. The requirements of such a testbed placed a number of constraints upon the adaptive system which affected the design and functionality. One of these requirements was that the adaptive system should comply with the US MIL-STD 188-141A standard for Automatic Link Establishment (ALE), US DoD (3). The relative performance of the adaptive system and commercial equipment operating to this standard shows that the flexibility offered by an adaptive system does not impair performance in the MIL-STD 188-141A interoperable mode. The operation of an Automatic Radio control System (ARCS) can be divided into 3 distinct phases, Arthur & Maundrell (4). The radio link is set up using ALE procedures;once the link is in use the changeable nature of the HF channel makes some form of Automatic Link Maintenance (ALM) necessary. In order to select the optimum channel upon which to establish the link Automatic Channel Selection (ACS) requires some mechanism to sense or predict the current channel conditions. all 3 of these phases must be implemented in a system capable of providing a testbed for new techniques for ARCS, and must be implemented with some flexibility in terms of functionality and configuration if the system is to be either a useful testbed or an effective adaptive system.

This paper presents a concept of multimedia railway information and communication system for train operation and passengers, which is intra-network system for railway information connected to public network. And this paper proposes a new train radio communication system between trains and ground facilities which adopts subcarrier multiplexed (SCM) lightwave system in feeder links and 45 GHz band millimeter wave radio communication system in radio links, for aiming high-speed and large-capacity communication such as multi-channel quasi-videos. Also this paper describes performance estimation of this proposed system obtained by computer simulation. Results of estimation show a high degree of feasibility in all cases.
