This paper introduces a new all-optical network design approach using a multiple ring concept as an alternative to the present mesh network scheme. It is shown that several different design alternatives using multiple rings exist and they can be classified into two categories according to the way in which the traffic is accommodated. The one that offers the most simple control and management has been investigated and is discussed here. It is shown that this approach can be very useful for the design and implementation of wavelength division multiplexing networks as it offers many useful advantages of the ring structure while is still able to achieve the high efficiency of network bandwidth usage due to high connectivity in the mesh topology. For example, in the sample network considered here the multiple ring scheme only requires less than 10% extra capacity in comparison to the pure mesh design.

There is a need for an automated architecture engineering tool to support advanced communication networking efforts. Agencies, such as the US Army's communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) and Program Executive Office Command, control, and communications systems (PEO-C3S) have the requirement for a suite of applications to provide detailed diagramming, definition and analysis. Many COTS and GOTS products are available to perform some of the tasks required in analyzing, designing, developing, and implementing a network. Many tools which are graphically oriented for use in designing a network, do not provide the capability of automated analysis. While many other network analysis tools are not graphical or user-friendly, they lack the ability to store relevant "user" data. Some of the information to populate the network architectures exists in inventory databases but the data is not easily accessible and does not contain all the information required.

We have developed a cost-effective regional personal-computer (PC) communication network system based on fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) systems and examined its realization. The system provides a LAN environment and group communication services to the customers. The intelligent bridge circuit, called the low-end card (LEC), is set up in the subscriber's household. The LEC provides the popular Ethernet interface (10Base-T). The leased circuits are connected between the LEC and the center brouter (bridging router). The LEC and the brouter are controlled by the management server to function as the group communication system. The brouter, which has a multiplex subscriber-port interface, is required to accommodate a lot of customers cost effectively. This paper presents the system design of a multiplex-port brouter with SDH/SONET interface. The brouter can accommodate about 2000 subscribers. Ethernet packets are transferred through each subscriber channel between the LEC and the brouter using the HDLC protocol. A group communication mechanism based on packet filtering via the MAC addresses of PCs is presented. The Ethernet packets are filtered by the brouter to eliminate all packets except those from/to the same group members. The implementation of the group management function into the center brouter and the customers premises LEC is discussed. The traffic reduction effect by the brouter is also estimated from experimental results.

The integrated management of DoD communications networks and services on military and commercial satellites remains a major challenge in today's open multivendor, multitechnology environment. The application of ITU-T standards for communications management, known as telecommunications management network (TMN) may prove to solve this challenge. This paper provides an overview of the TMN concepts and presents an architecture based on TMN principles for the integrated management of DoD communications on military and commercial satellites. A near-term approach as well as an approach for integrated military satellite communications management in the 21st century are discussed. The paper also provides an overview of the issues and the steps that need to be taken to apply TMN standards to military communications management.

The fiber loop carrier system aimed at the FTTC deployment, in short FLC-C, is now being developed to provide Korea Telcom's subscribers with the broadband interactive services such as VOD, Internet etc. The system is largely made up of two parts; one is the telephone offices' equipment called HDT; the other is the subscribers' equipment called ONU which is installed outdoors in the area of densely populated residents. Firstly, this paper gives an outline of FLC-C system, and then introduces its network configuration and services. Secondly, its outdoor ONU cabinet and power supply are presented and lastly, a remote-centralized power monitoring architecture is dealt with.

With the advent of high-speed networking technologies such as fiber optics, a traditional bottleneck in communication has disappeared. Now, the speed at which a processor can execute a communication protocol is the most significant limiting factor in protocol performance. The question is, how can a multimedia application take best advantage of these high-speed networks? We adopt an optimized implementation approach that allows efficient use of the bandwidth available on today's high-speed networks. In this paper, we propose a new horizontal processing architecture that processes data as soon as it arrives from the network. This model increases the processing speed of the OSI model by using a multiple-instruction, single-data (MISD) scheme. However, the OSI protocol stack often imposes ordering constraints that prevent concurrent processing of the protocol layers. By using a fixed packet format, all layers from the network layer through to the presentation layer are processed in parallel. A prototype shows that the proposed model has a performance improvement of up to 60% more than the conventional approach.

The Internet has become a common target to attack because of security concerns. Reports of incidents, such as attempted and successful intrusions, have grown dramatically. Several studies have shown that many individuals and companies are abstaining from joining the Internet simply because of such security concerns. The article presents an innovative approach to Internet security which is based on a multiple intelligent agent architecture. This multi agent based security system is focused on one network domain (subnet) only. Four kinds of agents are deployed in the system. They are User Agent, Domain Security Agent (DS Agent), Access control Agent (AC Agent), and Audit Agent. A Security Information Repository is used to store security information for the network domain, including access information, user profiles, application profiles, authentication keys, etc. These agents communicate with each other through the Information Broker which runs as a co-ordinator not only for the security agents but also for all of the accessible applications in the subnet. A firewall is used as the interface between the subnet and the Internet. Its main function is to filter out the requests which intend to bypass the Information Broker. Additionally, in order to handle the requests from users in other subnets, agents may contact their peer agents in the remote network through the Internet.

Many telephone Local Exchange Carries (LECs) and cable Multiple System Operators (MSOs) have experimented or deployed Fiber Distribution cable. Whether placing an optical network Unit (ONU) within 3000 feet of each subscriber or on the side of the house, these LECs and MSOs are demanding the most economical deployment architecture to serve their subscriber base with the greatest bandwidth possible. Since the 1980s, principally the LECs have deployed remote terminal (RT) sites in each and every feeder route in their network. Many of these sites are already fed by fiber. These fiber-fed RTs in the outside plant marked the first major encounter with having to provide remote power and associated battery backup in the outside plant. Usually, the powering architecture for these RTs has consisted of a -48-Vdc rectifier system connected to a -48-Vdc battery bus, all housed in a metal cabinet or concrete hut/CEV. As the quantity of RT sites undergoes rapid growth, and as the powering requirements for the ONUs hosted by these RTs also increase, other powering architectures, including network, or centralized powering, offer potential advantages. This paper discusses a powering architecture where a power node is located together on the same casement and pad as the RT. Compared to conventional powering, this co-located power node and RT allow a dramatic increase in the quantities of ONUs which may be hosted by an RT as well as many other advantages. This co-located power node may also be configured to provide 60/75/90 Vac power for HFC networks, out of the same power node.

The Australian Defence Force vision is for a single conceptual communications network applicable to all bearers, be they land-line, satellite or in this case, HF radio. Although much work has been done on the use of Internet protocols over satellite and land-line wide area networks, little has been done on the integration of HF bearers. The Australian Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) trial radio network allows investigation of networking issues and the demonstration of modern capabilities in HF radio. The impetus behind much of this work is that Australia is replacing its defence HF radio communications facilities with a modernised HF communications system (MHFCS). The resultant network will be one of the World's largest military HF radio networks. The new network is required to provide a wide range of services typical of military command and control; some not normally carried by HF radio. The stalwart of military HF communications rests with broadcast and messaging. However, this situation is changing. The network must now carry email, imagery, text, data files, and voice. The new system needs to possess automatic network functionality. These requirements can only be met through new technologies and new network architectural solutions.
