all-optical networks are a strong answer to the huge data traffic demand expected for the forthcoming information society. An interesting networking aspect represents broadcasting in an all-optical environment. This issue is addressed in the present paper for an all-optical network called MATRIX (multiwavelength all optical transparent information exchange). The architecture enables the all-optical interconnection of a large number of nodes with both a small number of wavelengths and wavelength continuity based on a consequent exploitation of wavelength reuse as well as space- and wavelength-division multiplexing. Two different broadcasting schemes are investigated regarding their employment in the network. An analytical model is developed and the corresponding simulation results are in good agreement.

China is experiencing a very rapid phase of development in the optical fibre network. Recent years saw the completion of many long-distance fibre-optic cable trunks, bringing the total length of China's fibre-optic cable to 70000 km, connecting all the 29 provinces. A fibre-optic cable network with Beijing as the centre has been primarily formed. The successful opening of some 2.4 Gb/s SDH systems in 1995 marked a higher step in the nation's trunk telecommunications technology. To upgrade the basic telecommunications network, the building of the SDH network, CCS No.7 network and monitoring and control network has been accelerated. As a part of CNII (China National Information Infrastructure), a new development of fibre-optic cable network has been planned.

Since the advent of computer communication networks, there have been considerable advances in the field of OSI network management. When there are a number-of subsystems operating and manipulating many complex jobs interconnected by a networks, the need for a network management facility is essential. The network management system is based on the ISO standards for OSI management. It is concerned primarily with the management of the communication subsystems in each node connected to an OSI network. The developed system does not attempt to implement all the management functions, but rather shows how the framework can be used to provide these functions. The ISO network management framework, based on the ISO basic reference model, has been defined to provide the means for the communication subsystems in all the nodes connected to a network to be remotely monitored and controlled. The paper describes the concepts development and achievements of our project in the field of OSI network management, which are applied to the project "optical fiber integrated services ring for Shanghai petrochemical complex".

We describe a high-speed optical wide area network (WAN) architecture called the multi-cylinder ShuffleNet (MCSN). Its basic topology is a recirculating shuffle exchange network with an all-optical data path from source to destination. The network capacity and performance is improved by augmenting it with multiple parallel copies of the original topology called routing cylinders. This approach avoids the use of a global request/acknowledge mechanism by matching the rate at which packets can be input into the network to the rate at which packets can be transmitted through the network (without congestion). Packets are dynamically stored within the switching nodes (using only fixed delay line elements) and the links of the network, and congestion control within the network is handled by routing blocked packets onto alternative routing cylinders. The architecture is easily scalable, designed for bit-synchronous, packet asynchronous traffic and utilizes a simple distributed control scheme. Simulation results which demonstrate these features are given.

In considering end-to-end self-healing capabilities, various network evolution scenarios have to be looked at. network evolution scenarios, such as an embedded SDH/SONET network migration to a hybrid STM/ATM network or deployment of a new all-ATM access, have different architecture characteristics, and thus may lead to different self-healing solutions for providing network survivability. This paper reviews the self-healing schemes for the end-to-end network architecture evolution, introduces some new schemes for ATM networks and segment based self-healing strategies to provide flexibility of deploying various survivable network architecture scenarios, and provides a perspective on guiding current and future self-healing network architecture planning.

To accommodate the large PCS user populations expected in the future, mobility management architectures in which location databases are organized in a tree have been proposed, e.g. for third-generation mobile systems such as the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS). We propose the use of caching as an auxiliary strategy for reducing the network impacts of locating mobile users in a tree-structured architecture. We discuss several issues which arise for implementing caching strategies in such an architecture. We quantify the costs and benefits of caching for one particular variation of a caching strategy in order to illustrate the trade-offs involved, and present possible alternative strategies also. We show that under certain assumptions, with an eager caching strategy where the signaling architecture is a tree, for users whose regional call-to-mobility ratio (RCMR) exceeds 5, caching can result in up to 30% reductions in total network cost as well as call setup time.

The design issues for a scalable video server is described and, according to these issues, the system architecture of the scalable video servers are proposed. The system uses ATM switching technology to scale up the dimension of the service. There are four major components within the proposed system, namely the server headend control (SHC) unit, the stream router, the video pumping unit (VPU) and distributed storage devices. The functions of each of the components are described and the key components in the system are the stream router and the VPU. Operations and performance limitations on the VPU are given and the result shows that a single storage device can serve only a limited number of video streams. Finally, the paper focuses on the design of the stream router as it is used to connect multiple VPUs for producing guaranteed throughput and bounded delay variance for each video stream.

WDM single-hop networks allow a pair of nodes to exchange data packets directly and require an efficient protocol that coordinates the process of data transmission. However, the network performance with such protocols can be deteriorated by collisions that occur on the control channel, data channel, destination node and source node. We present a Collision-Free Reservation Protocol (CFRP) for WDM single-hop networks with a passive optical star coupler. To eliminate all causes of collision, the CFRP properly distributes the transmission schedule both in time (position of data channel on the time axis) and space (wavelength of data channel to be used). Compared with previous reservation-based protocols, the proposed CFRP enhances the overall network performance. This improvement in terms of network throughput and delay is verified through numerical implementations.

This paper proposes a hierarchical approach to the routing issue in ATM-based broadband multi-service networks. We show how distributed route selection algorithms embedded within network nodes may be managed by a TMN system, by virtue of a management service called load balancing, to increase their adaptivity to network wide conditions and therefore their effectiveness. The paper elaborates on the issues involved, presents specific algorithms and a TMN-compliant management architecture. The proposed management service influences the routing decisions by conveying network-wide information and contributes to the network load balancing by directing the routing algorithms to route traffic to the least congested network areas. Results regarding the effect of the proposed management system on the network operation are also presented.

In this paper, we first propose a class of workstation cluster which utilizes optical wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) technology to connect nodes (work-stations) of the cluster. The optical Bus Computer Cluster (OBCC) falls in the class of cache coherent non-uniform memory access (CC-NUMA) multiprocessors. The basic topology of the cluster is star-shaped with an optical star-coupler in the center to enable one-hop simultaneous broadcasting of information packets from one node to all other cluster nodes. WDM technology not only multiplies by N times the network bandwidth using a single optical fiber, where N is the degree of wavelength multiplexing, but also provides independent communication paths between pairs of cluster nodes by properly assigning wavelengths to inter-node communication. Then we identify the cache subsystem requirements for the OBCC and propose or deferred cache coherence protocol suitable for the OBCC. The basic coherence maintenance scheme is to lazy-evaluate the cache coherence transactions among cluster nodes, utilizing the weak consistency memory model. By deferring the transactions, it is possible to combine multiple transaction issues into one transaction by accumulating modified status bits in the enhanced cache status fields. Since not only the remote memory access but also coherence transaction are costly operations in CC-NUMA systems, the deferred invocation of coherence transactions is particularly useful in CC-NUMA systems such as OBCC. We then give a performance evaluation by simulation that the coherence protocol effectively reduces coherence transactions, particularly in situations where false sharing of longer cache lines becomes noticeable.
